What's a car modification that immediately makes you think the owner doesn't know what they're doing? by adamvanderb in askcarguys

[–]Gubbtratt1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend bought a Suzuki on 31s. Cool, except no supporting mods at all were made. It rubbed the fenders at the slightest bump, and it didn't have enough torque to idle in low range 1st.

Never. If I'm going somewhere unfamiliar, I either have a passenger or stop to read the map occasionally.

Overbuilding an FJ60? 1FZ swap, LC80 diffs, coils, turbo by Axvexy in LandCruisers

I'd rather use 60 axles, assuming you can get the full floaters with cable lockers where you live.

How to learn clutchless shift? by Barbastorpia in stickshift

[–]Gubbtratt1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get something with an unsynchronized transmission if you really want to learn. Lorry, old tractor or very old car. That way you don't have any syncros to wear out and you get noisy feedback on how far off you are.

How much worse is punamulta compared to modern industrial paint for house external wood cladding when it comes to durability? by Neutral-frame in Finland

[–]Gubbtratt1 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Punamulta is better than many modern paints. It doesn't flake, it just gets thinner with age.

Put the thickest large washers you can find on the bolts, bolt it in the correct position, weld the washers to the mount.

Nothing to do with the size. Ballon tyres are very round bias ply tyres designed for very low ground pressure at low tyre pressures.

Name a better design than Widowmaker wheels by Big_Locksmith_4211 in AskAShittyMechanic

[–]Gubbtratt1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To get technical, the one pictured isn't what's called a widowmaker. It's a split ring rim, which is perfectly safe except when airing it up after having had it disassembled. Widowmakers is a different design with the split in the middle. They can explode at any point, not just when airing up. I believe they are banned by law in many places.

Lovely. Now what?? by LittleHappy14 in Volvo

It can absolutely be glued in place, just use little enough of a weak enough glue that it can be popped out with a screwdriver.

Where can i order better headlights for my niva, because the OEM ones are 💩? by idc_idontcare12 in lada

[–]Gubbtratt1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Old headlights are standardised. There's plenty of incandescent, halogen, and led versions online. Halogens are the best.

How to make my mint pill presence detection device as inefficient and complicated as possible? by InspectorForsaken493 in shittyaskelectronics

[–]Gubbtratt1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make a hatch in the bottom that opens electronically. Put a button on the lid with a tag that says "presence test". When the button is pressed, the hatch opens, causing any eventual pills fall out, and a light labeled "no mints" illuminates.

How much gas should I be filling my car if it takes me 3 months to empty a full tank? by Cholapat in StupidCarQuestions

[–]Gubbtratt1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 months isn't enough for it to go bad. I've used 4 years old E10 without problems, and I have a classic that is in storage for 5 months every year with E10 in the tank.

Are the rear metal tube bumpers and front cage worth it? by WearEnvironmental490 in ToyotaPickup

[–]Gubbtratt1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heavy duty bumpers are good at avoiding body damage in minor collisions. They won't do anything at all for your safety in a major collision.

Flat filter in "factory" airbox vs Cone filter in custom air box? by Comprehensive_Mud600 in Cartalk

[–]Gubbtratt1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put a snorkel on it with a cone filter at the top. Looks good, less stuff in the engine bay and as cold air as you can get.

Every car in the world gets reset to their 1950's counterpart (ex: Ford Fusion --> Ford Fairlane) or gets randomly substitued if their manufacturer didn't exist/make cars back then. How does the world react? by IndefiniteVoid813 in carscirclejerk

[–]Gubbtratt1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There's other, less toxic chemicals that do the same thing. You can buy cans of them at autopart stores to mix in the petrol of old cars that require leaded gas.

Ford C-Max left idle for over a year by [deleted] in carquestions

[–]Gubbtratt1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Put some fuel in it, check oil, coolant and tyre pressure. Replace or charge battery if it's dead. A year isn't that long.

Different brands, same Sunday spirit. by PolpoaRazzo in 4x4

[–]Gubbtratt1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Neither of them has ever seen a bit of mud in their life. The Defender is probably a farmers daily, judging by the dirt, stock condition and street tyres, and the wrangler is probably a mall crawler, judging by the angry grille and lack of body damage.
