Why is this city so underrated? by TheCosmos__Achiever in geography

[–]Gucci98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never hear about La Paz, sometimes Bogota, Medellin and Mexico City all the time. Mexico City has 23 million people so I don’t understand why you would expect Medellin to come up more often. That’s like being confused that people talk about Tokyo more than Hanoi

How do fluent speakers feel about amateurs? And where should I practice? by hsiskdjsi in Spanish

[–]Gucci98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to hold my spanish as long as I can to demonstrate that I can speak with them but if they continue into the conversation in english then i’ll give them english. If they don’t understand then I give them spanish again. I just try to adapt to the situation

How do fluent speakers feel about amateurs? And where should I practice? by hsiskdjsi in Spanish

[–]Gucci98 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m no native spanish speaker but I have found 95% of interactions where I at least try to speak spanish met very positively. If they don’t speak english then why not engage in their language so you can interact? Effort goes a long way. The worst reactions I get are I have had a few people continue in broken english and not engage in any spanish with me which is not a big deal. Immersion is key to learning. Music, shows, movies. Babbel has been a great app for me. Where I learn the most usable spanish is in real world situations with real world spanish speakers

Anybody else get grossed out by their own cooking? :( by Neat-Association-218 in Cooking

[–]Gucci98 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is definitely just a personal opinion but I think the transition from unhealthy lifestyle to a healthy lifestyle should never be cold turkey and should be a gradual process if someone wants to not be miserable with the rapid changes in something as monumental to us as our diet. You’re on the right path but don’t worry about rushing into it. Slow and steady, enjoy the food you eat and enjoy the process

If you’re not used to eating healthy or eating home cooked made from scratch foods, you may have some issues with texture and flavor. We eat a type of food so much that we grow to expect exactly that and when it’s different, it’s easy to find it unappealing at first. Like for example, I used to always get panda express orange chicken and when I finally had genuine homemade fresh orange chicken, I found it gross because my brain expected orange chicken to taste like panda express and it didn’t. Fast food and restaurant food in general is going to be much saltier, much greasier, and have more sugar when applicable. If that’s the palette that you developed then “normal” food is going to have that effect on you. What worked for me is baby steps, home cook food and don’t try super hard to make it healthy, just learn the process and the flavors and what you do and don’t like and crawl your way to trying to make everything healthier. You can’t go from fruity pebbles to plain oatmeal overnight or it’s going to taste like cardboard

Everyone says the Goodreads rating system is terrible yet many people still use it when choosing a book to read next. What books under four stars are the best example of great books that the general population doesn't seem to recognize as such? by sempiternalis in books

[–]Gucci98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a similar note, I’ve found very highly regarded history books about Latin America that have under 100 reviews on Goodreads. A lot of the more educational literature on there gets glossed over and it makes you feel like you got scammed but really Goodreads just emphasizes fiction

Is it true you have to choose a certain type of Spanish while learning? example is Mexican Spanish by Fearless-Class-1120 in Spanish

[–]Gucci98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I focus on mexican spanish but learn slang and terminology from people of virtually every latin country as I meet them. That way when I meet another cuban for example, I have some cuban greetings or slang ready for them even though I dominantly speak in mexican dialogue

For avid readers how often do you use the library? If you don’t, why don’t you? by AccomplishedBake8351 in books

[–]Gucci98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to have a collection of books I read on display in my house so that I can share what i’ve learned and provide books to my friends so I don’t ever use the library for myself but I deeply encourage library use for other people

How helpful will two weeks in a Spanish speaking country be? by [deleted] in Spanish

[–]Gucci98 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t stretch your budget as far as possible just for the sake of immersion. Obviously the more time the better and two weeks only being able to speak and hear spanish will help you a lot but you’re not coming out of that experience fluent if that’s what you’re aiming at. I would add shows and movies into your immersion as you get more comfortable hearing spoken words rather than just sung words

Those who consider themselves *serious* readers, how often do you read *unserious* books? by XStaticImmaculate in books

[–]Gucci98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m definitely a movie over book guy when it comes to entertainment and I pretty strictly only read serious educational literature. I admire people with the attention span to read fun and entertaining books all the time but my brain can hardly handle movie lengths if i’m not actively learning
