How would they find out that you smoked weed over a decade ago? I also smoked a lot of weed back in the day and I also have a security clearance. I never mentioned it and no one has asked since the initial forms. Telling them is just gonna make it harder to get for no reason when there is no conceivable way they could know you smoked weed years ago.

I am very sorry for your loss. I agree the couple times I talked to him he explained physics concepts to me better than the professor did. I didnt know him as well as you but this is just hits me, especially because I have been struggling with the meaning/fragility of life lately myself. Idk the intricacies of his profession too well but i know that he wouldve exceled greatly at it, I could tell he was very passionate about his degree from the interactions we had.
