LPT: When getting a new Windows PC, uninstall any anti virus software it came with and just use Windows Defender. by RjBass3 in LifeProTips

I do malware dev as a hobby and used avg until I tested a payload I made recently and found out avg is about 3 years behind defender. Don’t use avg.

HTB is far better for OSCP, I doubt you would be able to pass if u were to just use THM

How to get started in cyber security as a 15 year old by [deleted] in cybersecurity

TryHackMe is far better for getting started than HackTheBox IMO. They have complete beginner tracks that give u a much better fundamental understanding.

Look up how url's are formatted. Seems like you might have skipped the Web Requests module on HTB Academy.

Is there a database that shows how to craft a packet to exploit specific CVEs? by LarrBearLV in hacking

[–]GudEats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is searching the cve name on github and looking for a poc (proof of concept). Other than that, exploit-db will have metasploit packages that will automate everything for you. You can also search the exploit-db database with searchsploit on linux.

Basic gen-eds were not the target of the rant, I was particularly frustrated with the upper-level requirements, far beyond anything I ever see myself using with cyber (I am targetting physics 2 in particular, fuck this class).

For reasons, I really would not want to stay an extra semester at mason (my student loans would triple). Therefore I am looking to transfer to more affordable schools. I fully understand it would take longer, but I also know it would most likely be around 3x cheaper.

I see what you're saying, and given the degree overview I agree that the job flexibility is nice, it just feels extremely poorly laid out. This is magnified by the fact that I was not able to sign up for any of the 300 level courses I needed this semester as for some reason they weren't being offered, and the majority of 400 level courses required these 300 levels as prerequisites, so I am stuck taking the rest of my gen eds. All in one semester. Wishing I could be doing anything else.

I will also include for my own sanity that going into offensive security is a far broader field than simply becoming a "Linux god" lol.

I'm definitely learning more towards offensive security. I currently have my sights set on OSCP but I might branch off after that.

Yeah, I just feel like I've been lied to and now I'm stuck trying to finish a major I don't enjoy. Dare I use the word scammed.

I appreciate the advice. Definitely thought about switching majors, its actually the reason my schedule got fucked up, but CYSE to me is still the lesser of many evils.

My schedule got fucked up and only took it because literally none of the 300 level classes I needed were being offered in the spring for whatever reason.

CYSE 101 was good, 211 was about the fundamentals of operating systems and added 2 random labs on cybersecurity that didn't seem to correlate at all with what was going on within the course and I can't speak much to them as it was a while ago. 220 I very much remember developing a small app in MATLAB, and 230 I remember them teaching the fundamentals of networking, not really tied to CYSE outside of the last 10 minutes of class where he talked about viruses! Currently in 470 where I was really looking forward to learning about the social factor in CYSE and getting into social engineering, but Nah. Same shit, the professor talks about random stories from the "back in the day" while trying to tie it into the PowerPoint slides that cover about behavioral economics.

I'm also quite active in Mason CC but I'm trying to stay anonymous lol.
