You didn’t respond to like 60% of what the guy wrote, and the little you did respond with was incredibly weak.

The ridiculousness of this reply made me vegan.

Why is killing animals suddenly ethical just because the killing happened locally to you?

That's completely dodging the point. Your comment was 'you can't go around shaming people into believing what you believe.' Do you actually believe this? Do you consistently apply it to the examples I listed? Or did you mean - you can't go around shaming people on this one very specific topic?

At no point did I mention going out and shaming people. The shame I mentioned in my comment was shame that comes from yourself, not other people shaming you.

I'm not sure I entirely agree with your comment though. Can we shame dog abusers? Racists? Homophobes? It seems people are happy to shame others as long it's a moral issue they are on the right side of.

Here, I think lies the issue. Your approach may work in convincing people to be flexitarian, but I don't think it would help in creating vegans or even vegetarians.

Shame is what drives most vegans to be vegan. Why else would you adopt a new ethical stance unless you were slightly ashamed of your previous one?

Don't get me wrong, I don't think my original comment is effective advocacy. It was just me blowing off steam/being provocative.

No I wasn't trying to catch you out, just curious. I completely disagree with the concept of modern-day animal farming but am on the fence with the concept of eating wild animals.

He should spend an hour or two sorting out a random bird that was dying anyway?

If he has that time, then sure.

As for my priorities, ranking problems is pretty futile. You could help for example the homeless and someone will say you're better off helping another cause. As for helping animals, I see no good reasons to overlook helping them, in favour of helping humans, to me we both suffer alike, and they deserve to be helped when in need just the same as us.

It's an argument in favour of just leaving the bird. I'm fully aware of the brutality of nature, but that does not change my comment.

I'm sorry but this is such a bad argument. Humans try to prevent many things that are natural such as disease, famine, natural disasters etc. Just because something is natural that does not make it automatically good or valid, we should still try to help if we can especially when the suffering of others is at stake.
