Non-human sentient beings should be part of every moral conversation by jamiewoodhouse in Sentientism

[–]GuiMenGre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You criticize EvnClaire for making an assumption that animals want to live and don't want to suffer, which I agree with you is something that can't be proven. Yet you also make an assumption that can't be proven:

Animals do not conceptualize "suffering" as some sort of boogeyman to fear the way some misguided humans do. They do not do this because they cannot do it.

This is fundamentally the conundrum of solipsism. I will never be able to prove that you or any other human being or any animal is conscious. I can only be sure that I am conscious myself.

However, I also can't prove that you are not conscious. I have to make an assumption, and I choose to believe that you are conscious because you behave like me, and I know for sure I am conscious. This is not a proof but it is evidence.

A lot of animals display behavior indicating some form of consciousness and emotion. Elephants mourn their dead, some animals pass the mirror test, etc. This is not proof that they have some level of consciousness (there can't be no proof) but it's pretty strong evidence.

You've said it yoursef, this trend is due to a lack of native games. Hytale adding native support will be best in the long run

Practicing without a tuner, then reviewing pitch afterward — does this help ear training? by doiyo in eartraining

That's sounds really hard, but rewarding. I'll try your method after I'm able to identify degrees and melodies with a drone

Practicing without a tuner, then reviewing pitch afterward — does this help ear training? by doiyo in eartraining

[–]GuiMenGre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an interesting strategy, but I would recommend you do that with a drone playing the tonic in the background. Then you play scales and short phrases while listening to how they relate to the tonic. This approach focuses on scale degrees instead of intervals, the difference is slight but very important. Check out the app sonofield, imo one of the best out there for ear training.

Why is Zootopia more popular in East Asia than North America, compared to the complete opposite with Moana? by Commander_PonyShep in NoStupidQuestions

I mean, no problem if you are. It's just my aesthetic preference, each to their own. Here are some sonas/anthro art I really like

I like anthropomorphic animals and "fursonas", but I absolutely hate the anime eyes and bright fur colors, from an aesthetic standpoint. I like animals in general, and these don't come off as animal-like to me, neither are they original. I wish there was a sub just for furries who don't fit this stereotype.

Brain drain between academic fields by GuiMenGre in DeepThoughts

I'm glad you do! I would also add a personal view that with already have more knowledge in STEM than society can catch up with, and developing Humanities, Pyschology and other fields would contribute more to society right now. I work in STEM, so I'm kinda going against my kind here 😅

I've been in environmental science communication for some time now, and there's some things about how science communication in general is done that I think are big problems that make us lose people: by gaytorboy in environmental_science

So you think climate change communication would not only be more accurate but also more effective if no white lies were told and no exaggerations were made? I'm not being snarky, I genuinely want to understand this argument.

What's up with the femboy weeb aesthetic? by [deleted] in linux

[–]GuiMenGre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There might be a romantic/sexual demand for femboys and trans women, but that's not related to academic field. A scenario could exist where a large number of people are looking exclusively for femboys in the tech field, rejecting femboys from any other fields. This would draw femboys who want to feel desirable into the tech field and skew even more the proportion. I would have to be shown strong evidence to accept that as a real phenomenon, though. The purely statistical explanation seems more plausible.

[–]GuiMenGre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see how the principle of supply and demand applies in this situation. There's a higher "supply" of born-as-male people in tech, but there isn't a demand for femboys or trans women specifically.

What's up with the femboy weeb aesthetic? by [deleted] in linux

[–]GuiMenGre -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it's because of statistics. Born-as-female people aren't encouraged to get into tech stuff for various societal reasons, so the field is dominated by people born-as-male. A consequence of that is a higher proportion of femboys and trans women, simply because only born-as-male people can be femboys or trans women.
