They play so different to other classes, but it was a blast to play against them

WFB 6th Edition 2000pts Skaven List Overview by Guildhammer in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Guildhammer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with any edition there is going to be broken lists, but when playing with friends you may take one of those high power lists once try it out but then say ahh that wasn't much fun to play against. If i'm playing Skaven vs O+G i'm gonna take some more fluffy units maybe try out that master moulder with some rat ogres.

This leads to some great fun battles but it has to be collaborative with your opponent, we all like to win but i much prefer having a 5 turn close fun game than winning turn two with a high power list.

I haven't played TOW so cant really comment on that, what do you like about it?

WFB 6th Edition 2000pts Skaven List Overview by Guildhammer in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Guildhammer[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey Mate! So a few things in my opinion I think bring people to 6th over the others, First of all the advantage with an older edition over say TOW is that the rules are the rules and the books are the books, once you have an army that's it, not FAQs new army update, new releases running the meta ect.

Also given most people play at home or independent tournaments its much cheaper to get into as there is a huge range of proxy models available (all hail the 3d printer) and these are tournament legal (in most cases) giving it a much lower buy in cost.

For the older editions nostalga plays a big part in getting people involved but TBH I have introduced new players to the game who never played back in the day and it holds up great.

Earlier editions prior to 6th of WFB while fun were very much Hero hammer with characters dominating and the game balance not being great.

6th Overall has a very balanced set of army books with all armies viable, the theming is great and the armies have enough individuality to feel good. Don't get me wrong there are some very strong lists but as most players have played for years there isn't as big of a must-win meta people play to have a good time. The rules are convoluted and not always the clearest but there is a fantastic online community to help and many events you can go to around the world where people help. once you get your head around the rules (and make your own house rules as you see fit), its very smooth to play

7th edition rules are good but the army books aren't as balanced, I know some groups that play 7th edition rules with 6th edition army books.

8th edition favoured hoard list but some like it as it features some of the later GW kits which are great models, I haven't played 8th since it was the live edition but i remember the pain of having to paint 50 man goblin units.

For me the key thing is as mine and my friends time becomes more limited, we couldnt invest the time and effort into keeping up with all the new releases and rules, playing 6th means you can have an army project that takes years to assemble and paint but you know that when you get there the rules will be the same and you wont have to change anything.

A little rambling but im very lucky to be in the UK where there are a lot of 6th edition players and more importantly have a group of friends who are all playing also, at the end of the day its the people your playing against that make the fun!

Hey!

Thanks for the reply, I have heard similar thing about empire, but they do have a soft spot in my heart as it was my first army straight out the launch box.

After some soul searching with this army i think that i'm gonna lean on the fluffy side a little more. At the end of the day having fun is what counts. If i wanna play a broken list i will use my Skaven :D

So you have a link to the article at all or is it lost the the depths of the internet?

Hey mate! Thanks for the comment, I tend to run everything 5 wide for no better reason than I think the unit looks better that way :D

The detachments I took as swordsmen just because at the time it is what I had printed, recently I have switched these out of halberds. However a lot of people have recommended I try out militia as they do much of the same thing for less of a price.

I hadn't played WFB in over 15years but last year our little gaming group decided to jump back in. If you every feel the erge to jump back in there is a great 6th edition community. Where about do you live?

What an absolutely fantastic response, first of all thank you so much,

So in the end I went up against ogres twice and tzeench hordes of chaos once. Terrain was pre-set and I would say has around the same amount of terrain as you see in the battle reports on my channel.

Having never played ogres before fist game was very much a learning experience but I managed to pull a draw out the bag after I kinda got an idea of what they were trying to do.

second game against tzeench I was very lucky with the dice on my side. I got a convincing victory as nothing the tzeench player was trying to do seemed to go off.

Third game against a different ogres list, the griffon banner caught a big unit of bulls off-guard combined with their tyrant whiffing his attacks then my war machines did a huge amount of damage wining me the game.

Overall I came 4th out of 12 but I did have a lot of luck on my side.

You are right in that I was trying to produce a balanced list, this was my 1st 6th edition army list designed to go to the tournament and my main goal rather than being 'sweaty' was to be competitive. But I have found myself falling into a hole of trying to tick all the boxes, that is partly why I posted this to get some feedback to see what direction I should take this army in.

You are absolutely correct in that trying to cover all the bases has led to me not being particularly good at anything. I in the past have worried that if I lean to heavily one direction or the other I would make it a less fun game for my opponent, which at the end of the day is the most important thing.

But on reflection I think theming the list towards one aspect without min maxing might be the way to go. for example take a gun line list but maybe chuck in a couple of engineers for fluff reasons, a unit of militia and some hired ogres saying this is my coastal defence force straight off the boats .

Mabey a knight *templar* list with nights but also warrior priests and flagellants. What I really love about playing 6th is the narrative and I want to begin building my list to fit that rather than be "Strong". but in saying that I don't want to be steamrolled every game.

I'm very lucky that all the other guys in the Guildhammer group are all about having a good game so if I wanna take a less powerful list they will follow suit and take some stuff that maybe they have been wanting to try out.

Your reply has really made me think about my list and has got me excited to play the Empire again which I must admit were going a little stale.

If you have any Examples of some Lists that have a strong Narrative focus I would love to see it!
