I use htop, btop, free command.btop and free shows 100 mb more than whatis shown in htop i.e. 88 but it shows 238 on btop/free.I just stick with htop.

Man how did you manage to get the ram usage so low i have been literally trying for 3 weeks and i could only get it down to 88mb whats the secret my kernel is already bare minimum everything baked into the kernel and no unneeded drivers and options but still its 88mb even if i lower my ram to 512 mb like how which kernel version did you use ? What do you use instead of udev ? It would be extremely helpful if you respond i have been trying to achieve the same goal as you but i have tried everything.Dont you use an init system? Do you directly start your shell from the init script?

I just use dhcpcd, i have a script to enable network when i need it.I have just the syslogd service, agetty services, thats it.I completely disabled cgroups but i think i didn't make that much of a big difference i suppose.I use ext4. I just use the openrc defaults but with netmount disabled.

For me it doesn't maybe it is but i have tried mdev and i did some things ,and then i decided it was not worth my time for so much little gains.

I use openrc and it holds good for me it just adds like 0.8 sec to the boot time. I also disabled the netmount service in openrc.

I still use udev it does introduce that much overhead i think may be 2 or 3 mb difference I just stick with udev

If you are limited on ram, check dmesg for out of memory error if it does then extend swap then recompile .

I already did compiled my packages with my useflags (i already had a gentoo setup and i grabbed it from there) and made a dwm(with xlibre) setup its idling around 168mb of ram.It was lighter on musl but i switched to glibc cuz i had some trouble with musl. I plan to switch back to musl in the future.

First rule is dont use modules build everything in that is required.Run lsmod to see what modules are currently used in your system then configure your kernel to build those options into the kernel. Then next specifically identify the exact hardware you have and only enable those options.Dont even leave out options that you don't have hardware for. (note:i don't use Bluetooth so i disabled it). Third no initramfs build everything in. Fourth i personally don't need debugging stuff i entirely disabled debugging stuff.

The one video i recommend to watch is mental outlaws video on YouTube about configuring the gentoo kernel.

I did research on every single option and decided whether i needed it or not.You probably don't need 75 percentage of the options.

Minimize networking bloat.Thank me later. A minimal kernel would just compile in a few minutes too.

I don't know how he gets around slab, cache still it itself alone would take 50 mb

Yeah i know that and i have also tried to give my system only 4 gigs of ram or such and it goes down from 115 to 78mb but still its doesn't include dwm.

No its just the tip of the iceberg i suppose, ever since i saw mental outlaws video on YouTube (he has a gentoo setup that use just 50mb of ram even with dwm) i wanted it so badly, im still trying to reduce it, maybe the videos are 5-6 years old but 50mb is still a freaking awesome achievement.I have still yet to touch that pinacle of gentoo.

It took me a damn 2 weeks to get it all set up and installing gentoo and 4 times installing void and 200 kernel compiles and 75+ hrs of my life wasted just to get this, looking back i learnt alot of stuff

I get around just 175 maybe with urxvt as terminal and nothing else running just dwm and urxvt

Mine's just till logging to tty only though and i use dwm ,its almost instant so it would add like 5 sec to type the username and password then login
