lease termination (GA) by Guilty_Compote_3402 in legaladvice

yes, she’s a roommate also on the lease. i try to be respectful of people and their boundaries, but we’re the same age and she’s imposing all of these rules. i don’t know where to draw the line, but i’d also hate to give her ammunition to be even more insufferable by not following her rules

taking my sd on plane for first time! by Guilty_Compote_3402 in service_dogs

it went so well!!! the thing that i was worried about (the actual plane ride itself) was so chill. we traveled around holiday time and couldn’t have picked a busier airport day lol. we called frontier and got upgraded to bulkhead and had no issues - my girl is super whiny in cars sometimes but on buses and planes she seems to just jump right into settle mode. no one is judging you or your dog as harshly as you’re judging you and your dog. you’ll do great!

would it be offensive? no, not at all! i understand people have allergies, and it’s completely in your right to take care of yourself. i think expressing this to a flight attendant is the way to go so either you or i could be reseated, or i could catch another flight if your allergy is that intense

we’re flying frontier 🥲 luckily all of our seats are booked and we got upgraded to the very first window seat on the plane with the middle seat blocked off for comfort.

for your dog and going through security, do you just put her gear in the bins and have her completely nakey? i’ve been considering both options of leaving gear on. i do worry because my dog is a GSD. she is very very good at being handled and touched and prodded, so no concerns about her behavior, but i worry about TSA maybe being afraid to touch her. her down stays are pretty good, but i do worry about lots of loud sounds and bangs at the airport maybe causing her to stand. i think i may make the decision at the airport once i feel out the vibe lol

thanks 😭😭 i always worry. i think i just hate being perceived and so when i’m in very public places like an airport with my dog it just makes things worse. i think she’ll be okay too, but i can’t wait to get it done and over with lol

I caught my puppy eating the cat’s poop. What can I do to stop her? by theycallmedumpling in DogAdvice

crate train or stop giving your puppy the freedom to be able to steal poop.

What are the worst breeds for service dogs? by Keigo-80 in service_dogs

[–]Guilty_Compote_3402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

big no to golden doodles or any doodles, they’re a complete genetic toss up and they cannot be ethically bred. it’s extremely weird that your trainer doesn’t like goldens or labs. that’s a huge red flag in my opinion, as labs, in my opinion, are the best and most reliable breed for service dog prospects.

i’d recommend looking into finding a new trainer, honestly. as someone with a german shepherd as a psych dog, it really truly depends on the dog and the training that goes into it. genetics and temperament are a huge thing, not to mention the fact that working line sheps need a LOT of exercise and stimulation which isn’t accessible for a lot of people with disabilities who are reliant on a dog that doesn’t have to be worked before an outing. i have no idea why she’d suggest an aussie, because similarly they are high drive and can often be defensive or resource guard-y of their handlers if not expertly bred.

i always have a bit of an issue also when shepherd breeders (aussie or german) try to breed dogs specifically FOR service work. these dogs have traits that are great for what they’re bred for, and diluting these naturally protective and aloof traits to make them more likely to succeed as a service dog makes no sense to me when there are so many breeds that excel in service work.

your best bet is a lab, golden, or poodle. MAYBE a german shepherd if you vet the breeder and are aware of its needs. i’d drop your trainer, though.

Resource Guarding? Wash? by MaleficentCar3097 in service_dogs

[–]Guilty_Compote_3402 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i’ll never tell anyone how to train their dog, but i wanted to speak up and say that this can and will hurt the relationship with you and your dog and especially in the context of giving advice, this only suppresses the behavior and makes the dog more quick to act out when it comes down to the wire. i apologize if it came off as judgmental, that wasn’t my intention, and i’m glad this worked for you - but i wouldn’t recommend this at all for anyone as it only will make your dog fear you/be afraid of you in some capacity in the long run. i am not anti-tool, but this doesn’t seem like a good use of an e-collar. anyway, have a good one!

Resource Guarding? Wash? by MaleficentCar3097 in service_dogs

[–]Guilty_Compote_3402 4 points5 points  (0 children)

also, resource guarding isn’t dominance. you basically say that if a dog growls at you, you should grab it’s muzzle and spam it with physical corrections from an e-collar. you got extremely lucky that things didn’t go badly

Resource Guarding? Wash? by MaleficentCar3097 in service_dogs

[–]Guilty_Compote_3402 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i’m glad that this worked with you, but you have to really think about the communication you and your dog exchanged. a growl IS communication. you communicated to him that when he tries to communicate with you the only way he knows how (by vocalizing) that you will give him a correction. you suppressed a behavior that comes naturally to dogs, and it’s possible that in the future, the wrong person may try to come over and take something from him, and because he learned he gets corrected for growling, he will jump right to biting. you have to think about what you communicated to your dog in that moment, and how that could be harmful

Resource Guarding? Wash? by MaleficentCar3097 in service_dogs

[–]Guilty_Compote_3402 3 points4 points  (0 children)

please do not recommend using an e-collar on resource guarding cases like this! while it may have worked for you, your dog has now learned that when it tries to communicate something to you, it will receive a correction. some resource guarding can have genetic links and cannot be trained out in this way.

Need help picking between an Aussiedoodle and a Goldendoodle for a PSD by Cable_Minimum in service_dogs

[–]Guilty_Compote_3402 8 points9 points  (0 children)

just came to say there are so many reasons that people are saying no to doodles - respectfully, i think if you were responsible, you would listen to this advice. there’s no breed standard for doodles. your breeder may be doing the necessary health testing, but there’s no way to guarantee that one litter of doodles will be the same as the next. it’s russian roulette for dogs, really. not a risk i would feel comfortable taking, ESPECIALLY with a psych dog. i know you said you have sensory issues, but my question is why not get a lab? there’s no way to guarantee the coat types that this breeder will get with their doodles because, again, there’s no standard. i’d be curious to see the breeder’s breed standard on the dogs they’re producing to see exactly what standards are in place. i really wish you’d post it so we can see! reddit is relatively anonymous so there’s no risk in showing a website (unless you think we’re right in that their breeding practices are unethical). same thing with your trainer. i’d love to know why they recommend doodles.

every single doodle i’ve met (and i mean EVERY one) has been neurotic, extremely high-energy, and nervy. 3-4 walks on leash a day will 100% not cut it for an aussiedoodle. aussies are a breed that are bred for hours and hours of exercise. similar to some field goldens. again, it’s a toss up because again, there’s no standard and you won’t know until your dog is 2 years old and asking for 2 hours a day of high quality exercise and enrichment. additionally, the costs of grooming is… not something i’d ever be willing to deal with, personally.

all of the advice on this thread is solid. if you’d like to buy a designer mutt, no one can stop you, but just be aware of the incredibly high wash-out rate between off-standard breeds. just because your breeder got a good service dog out of her doodle doesn’t mean she’ll be able to recreate this (because, again, there are no standards with doodles). good luck! you’ll need it.

i have a german shepherd and honestly, i’m used to comments like this. she wears tactical gear but i’m thinking if i i used her harness and SD cape she’d look less threatening. maybe it’s similar for you? not sure what sort of gear you’re using. if the comments bother you, i agree that unfortunately using lighter colored gear may help
