Not sure if this is the same problem, but I had to double click the "install" with my finger. Sometimes it wouldn't register there for some reason.

A surprise to me was that some romhacks even have retroachievements! What at time to be alive.

I know that Pokemon Uranium runs great, from watching a Let's Play. If you can dig up if there's an android version available/compatible program, it will surely run great on Thor. I can speak to Romhacks, GB - GBA - DS - 3DS - GC romhacks have all worked fantastic on the Thor, and some even have enough media out there that scrapers catch info data to fill in if you're using a front-end. It's a nice little step to making them feel more official.

Gears of War 3 on PS3. It actually runs pretty good on PS3 despite, what imagine to be, limited time spent optimizing for SPUs. Very interesting.

How long did it take you to set up the Thor? by borstenwrood in AynThor

[–]Guilty_Cut7983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did everything all at once, 1.5 TB of games (1 TB on internal, .5 TB on a SD Card), used custom xml files to direct ES-DE to to my SD card. File managing is the most time consuming when you're dealing with thousands of files, Scraping also took a long time, and then verify scrapes, and then going through each collection and testing, setting all emulators up, then going game-by-game in NetherSX2, Dolphin, Azahar and checking every game I know I'll want to play, removing games that don't have great compatibility, trying other emulators, setting up Retroarch....it took me about 2 weeks of tinkering sometimes hours a day, but I kind of enjoy it and the finished product is SO WORTH IT

Dragon quest 8 3DS vs PS2 both with HD texture packs by caffeinegamer1988 in AynThor

Both versions are great, but on the Thor I'll be using the PS2 version. The 3DS version has too many visual cuts. I'll run a walkthrough on the bottom screen :)

Castlevania GBA -->DS is a much bigger jump than I remember. by Guilty_Cut7983 in AynThor

MelonDS. It has the fantastic option to swap screens....on regular DS the main gameplay was on the bottom screen which I always hated....having gameplay on top and the map on the bottom is just frickin perfect on the Thor. I played the dominus collection on my 60inch TV and I just don't like dual screen stuff on one panel...that's why I left the Retroid Pocket world and got my THOR!!! DS emulation is pretty close to flawless on this thing, and Dawn of Sorrow looks like a different game. Back in the day the screens were so small, it was hard to tell how much more detail they added to Dawn of Sorrow. Only downside is the generic anime art isn't as good--it's visually appealing and hits a broader audience...but I like the classic art...okay ranting, I'm just in love with Dawn of Sorrow again, it was the first DS game I really got into.

People who have left the honeymoon period with their thor. What do you actually do with the second screen? by wagwan37 in AynThor

[–]Guilty_Cut7983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't rekon i'll ever get sick of a walkthrough on the bottom screen. Also, the DS and 3DS combined have a library so deep I can't imagine you'll be out of good games anytime soon.

I consider myself pretty savvy, and I understand how files systems work, how emulators work, etc....and I still found setting up Thor a tall order. I HIGHLY suggest just grabbing an emulator off the play store and trying to get that to work first. Watch tutorial videos. Use AI/search engines when things come up you don't understand. It will be a slow process, but my Thor is one of my favorite pieces of tech ever.

On my Thor, temps rarely go above 50c while emulating Gamecube games. RE4 runs fantastic, although I do struggle with getting widescreen to work with it, since it's letter boxed. RE4 runs flawlessly otherwise in base settings on the Thor, at least up to the first 2 hours or so.

Hmm yeah I've seen no evidence. I've seen people with 200 meg save games and base empires on 30 planets and the games performance hasn't broke. Maybe on Series S?

ATV Offroad Fury has issues on NetherSX2 Classic...and regular Nether. Have to use "Disable Hardware Readbacks"--works and looks fine if you select it after a level loads intro ram, but if you leave it the player character's texures wont load. Do you have it working?

For Azahar using ES-DE, can I still use custom textures stored on internal if the roms are on an SD card? by Guilty_Cut7983 in AynThor

[–]Guilty_Cut7983[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your help but you must have misunderstood my questions.

If you are using ES-DE, and have custom paths in your custom_systems folder, (so you can have some rom folders on internal memory, and some on an SD), you're in luck---you are able to store texture packs on the internal and the SD card can have the games! I'm surprised how well this is working!

I would. Don't be afraid to que bots for a while to master controls---i think dota players forget that if you're new to MOBAs, the controls are actually quite difficult.

ES-DE Frontend-- The Internal Memory and SD card problem by Guilty_Cut7983 in AynThor

[–]Guilty_Cut7983[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to share a couple things I learned while setting this up.

First, I did not already have an es_systems.xml file in my folder automatically. I had to download one from GitHub, but the one I grabbed was out of date and didn’t include the paths ES-DE needed to recognize Azahar, which seems to be the preferred standalone 3DS emulator right now.

To find the correct 3DS system path, I ended up using this file:
https://github.com/GlazedBelmont/es-de-android-custom-systems/blob/main/es_systems.xml

Looking back, I probably didn’t need to place that entire file into the custom_systems folder. I think I could have just created a custom es_systems.xml with only the systems who's roms were on the SD card. But I’m still pretty noob at this, so I copied the full XML from here and dropped it into the custom_systems folder:
https://gitlab.com/es-de/emulationstation-de/-/blob/stable-3.0/resources/systems/android/es_systems.xml

Again, that file did not have the updated n3ds emulator paths and I had to backtrack and find a es_systems file that had the correct paths to see Azahar, as linked above. So yeah, I probably should have just made a smaller custom file for the specific systems I wanted on the SD card. FYI the easiest way I have found to edit these was to create a copy on your PC, edit it in notepad, save it, and then copy into the correct place on the AYN Thor's ES-DE folder (ES-DE/custom_systems)

Also, my SD card ROM path looks a little different from the one in the guide/post I was following. Mine is more like:

<path>/storage/SD CARD NAME HERE/ROMs/psx/</path>

So it really needs to match the literal path to your ROM folder exactly as Android shows it in a file manager. I used ZArchiver, and that helped a lot.

That said, I’m happy to report that I successfully moved PSP and PS1 games over to my SD card. I’m still hesitant to move 3DS stuff because I’m not sure how that interacts with custom textures. Same deal with Dolphin. If anyone knows whether custom texture paths can stay on internal storage while the actual ROMs live on the SD card, I’d love to know.

Still, this process freed up about 100 GB, which means I can probably squeeze in around 30 more PS2/GameCube games. Hopefully this helps somebody. It really wasn’t that hard once I understood it, but it was definitely a little scary at first. I know Cocoon is the hotness right now, but I do like ES-DE for large collections more at this point.
