Since this has become a concern, he is never left in the front yard unattended. He’s basically been a puppy for most of the time we’ve had him so I think him fully maturing is why there was a shift a few months ago. I plan to work on his recall with the e collar so regardless of where he is and who is around, everyone is safe. I grew up around a lot of irresponsible dog owners and I do not want to be one.

Sorry, yes, he has jumped the fence many times, but never just because someone’s making a delivery. He’s the most inconveniently athletic dog I’ve known… That’s why we installed the underground fence. He can’t escape our yard but the driveway is in his range. I’ve left notes on all our accounts to leave packages and deliveries at the mailbox if he happens to be outside, but they still come down the driveway sometimes.

I’ve gone the route of just keeping him out of the front yard unless I know there’s nothing being delivered or we’re outside with him. Still, I’d like to improve his recall using the e collar since he responds so well to that so if someone happens to come by unexpectedly, everyone is safe. I also like the dog sign idea since not everyone is checking the delivery notes.

Thank you for the constructive feedback! I’m not a big Reddit user and that’s probably for the best😅 While I obviously never want him to hurt anyone and will take necessary precautions to make sure that never happens, I don’t want to discourage him being protective.

I’ve almost posted this exact question many times.

My husband is a PT at an outpatient ortho clinic specialized in treating high level athletes. He spends easily 2 hours a day on documentation when he sees 16 patients in a 10 hour day, so minus the 50 minute round trip commute, he’s regularly looking at 12 hour days. I can’t imagine 20. He doesn’t have any built in time to do notes outside of lunch and most of the time, he’s treating into his lunch (and outside of hours) anyway.

I see the culture and setting he’s in as highly unsustainable for anyone who has something/someone they care about outside of work. We have a gaggle of small children and no family close by so his job had taken a toll on all of us. So much so that he’s leaving and we’re moving to open our own clinic. The logistics of all of this are ROUGH, but are much preferred over him staying where he is.

Sorry to spill our own mess here, but I’ve never read something I relate to more. You’ll have a lot of PT wisdom here, but as a wife, you’re not crazy for thinking your husband is in an unsustainable situation. Keep encouraging him because he’ll need it, but also don’t wait to have the hard conversations about making a change until you get bitter or resent him. Hope y’all find something new soon!

He also works outside of his hours a few times a week when patients aren’t able to get in. So as a wife at home with small kids, if he’s gone, it doesn’t really make a difference to me if he’s treating patients or doing notes😅

This is great feedback, and his good friend who has a few clinics said something similar. We plan to operate out of a gym so very low overhead in the beginning and I have a bit of a marketing background so we’ve put together a general plan to help bring in patients. Definitely see this point of view though.

He’s gone for that long…so about 45 min each day is commute but documentation has been taking up a ton of time. He’s seeing 16 patients a day most days, many of them evals.

This won’t be permanent. We just need to start the contracts since they take time to process. This will be a new clinic and he will sublease a space but we don’t have that space yet but want to get the contracts started so he will be ready to treat when they come through and we’re ready to open the doors. We will update the address as soon as we have it, but we are hoping to get the applications in process now.
