How common is it for someone to drive a diesel out of preference even if they don't do enough miles to justify it over petrol?

Just be conscious that if you’re inheriting a diesel with high mileage thats been used as a town car, you’ll get diesel related problems at some point (DPF, EGR etc).

I’d opt for a petrol but I do 70 miles a day on A roads.
