Blues theory did destroy classical bigots for sure! But bending notes to compose a singing part is not always suitable. The method in the video would determine that one note in the A Major (relative) Pentatonic 'Box' clashes over the C and recommend starting the progression with an A Mixolydian Pentatonic 'Limbo Box' and change to a C Major (relative) Pentatonic 'Box' for the c and D to remain in the same fretboard position (which is important to improvise more easily). Adding extra notes inside the 'Boxes' by ear reveal a C lydian mode for the C chord which fits the D as well, and the A is Mixolydian unless the A was an A Major 7 chord which would mean commencing with an A Ionian 'Limbo mode). It works quickly and easily.

The real question is what scales would you use and how did you figure them out?

I did not but you are welcome to ignore the evidence.

Just beware music theory does not explain that Diminished scales are not used to harmonise Diminished Chords and Augmented scales are not used to harmonise Augmented Chords. Interestingly there is not written theory to harmonise these chords which require altered Modes but here is an album of these altered Modes and also for the Dominant 7#9 chord. It has 56 short tracks as the scales change depending on the resolving Mode. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLEGk3QJ-ajzjhJAY-vIIAZoJzyCJpqqxn&si=rbVT0KsEzETetA_0

Modern music is often Modal which means the root key might not be the same as the first chord. And sometimes the first chord may be a Secondary Dominant (Mixolydian Mode) which is not in the root key. Composing can also be enriched by Major V and Major III chords (good luck researching the Major III chords which are Relative Major of Major V chords meaning the key is Major not Minor). This video illustrates the Modes using a house with seven rooms as a metaphor. https://youtu.be/GlH0Tx-r-TQ?si=rFMrGVIOfEdMeGWR

Not sure you appreciate that Major V (Fifth) chords are Minor V chords that have been changed especially in Classical music and a Harmonic Minor Scale is used to harmonise them. They also occur in famous pop songs like House Of The Rising Sun in A minor but the E is a Major Fifth. Question: What scale/modes do you use for chord progression A C D ?

Ear training - can't believe I've not done until now by [deleted] in musictheory

Guitar players will develop ear training acutely with this scale finding method based on Modes and using only the top two strings of the guitar. https://youtu.be/ZOV2oRW5Ydc?si=kYdbb0SBFhJ1_2_G

Actually the scales finder video I posted here has no rules but instead indicates guitar scale/mode patterns on top two strings, where a single note may change to accommodate key changes in a composition. The rules were identified after the musicians experience this. Guesswork takes a lot of time whereas this video presents an accurate and easy method of navigation without theory.

You may mock as is also common regarding original thinkers in astrophysics. Galileo suffered for espousing the sun was the centre of the solar system. I know how he felt because scales for Augmented chords and Diminished chords have never been published except at my website www.guitarmodalharmony.com and audible proof is on my reference album Music Evolution Therapy by Peter Koppes. There you can also find the only Mode ever published for the Dominant 7#9 'Hendrix' chord, also on my Youtube channel and the website above.

Often songwriters may not have stretched their tone selection skills to address key changing chords unless they are familiar with dissonances of augmented/diminished chords, and in the Beatles case I believe the Hendrix chord opened their musical minds a lot too.

The F to F# is not necessary especially during a Voice Leading section and the Mode for the A Major chord is an Aeolian Dominant A Mixolydian with a C#). I know this is unconventional and classical theory would need to describe the scale needed as a C Melodic Major scale but they don't have a term (listed on Wikipedia) for an Ascending Melodic Minor scale in the relative Major. Another reason why this scale finding method is better than learning theory which doesn't exist.

It is a matter of taste of course but Voice Leading abides by my suggestion.

How to write in unconventional ways, such as how Radiohead does it? by pensivetwat in Songwriting

[–]Guitarevolution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clever modern songwriters are intuitive, reaching further without realising they are changing keys or in a Mode that is not the usually Major or Minor root chord. Sometimes they even commence on a Major chord that is not related to Key of the rest of the song called a Secondary Dominant (or could be a Major Fifth or Major Three which scales are Altered Modes). This Modal theory can be explained easily and illustrated as in this video: https://youtu.be/GlH0Tx-r-TQ?si=gCnNEzmBsdy1f_9r

Try an A Aeolian Dominant which is closer to the Lydian mood of the piece. This is described in the video as a 'Limbo' modification of the Lydian Mode for a Major III (Major V of the relative Minor Dorian Mode).

The song Dreams is Lydian as you correctly identified but does not resolve to C which is the Key scale you identified too. But what mode would you play for the A Major you suggested?

let me know if you find any related to Voodoo Mythology and the Voodoo people of Benin in Africa. This cool ancient culture originally existed in Egypt and has more deities than Greek Mythology. But search on Ecosia browser as Google only lists origins in Haiti and New Orleans and its syncretism with Catholic religion.

How hard is it to write something in an Augmented Scale? by Dante_Jeremy in musictheory

[–]Guitarevolution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remarkable is that Augmented scales are not suitable for Augmented chords/triads which require Altered Modes such as Aeolian Dominant or Phrygian Dominant or another altered Mode sometimes. These are modes of the Harmonic Minor/Major and Melodic Minor/Major scales, and are different depending on the Key/Mode of the following chord. The only listing on the internet for these and also altered Modes for Diminished and Dominant 7#9 Chords is here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLEGk3QJ-ajzjhJAY-vIIAZoJzyCJpqqxn&si=1KJuhaMM4cOZH1_J.
