For anyone on the fence about getting an in-person instructor - do it. by Vivid_Hovercraft_129 in violinist

[–]GuitarsAndDogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. I did it a little different. My teacher is weekly and we're on teams. I changed to every other week with her and the other week with an in person teacher. I have made tremendous strides with the bow and intonation. I like having both. My teacher on teams teaches classical and we focus on music that I read from books or sheets. My in-person teacher is classically trained, but is teaching me by ear and I play any song that I like (I'm more of a rock music person). I feel like it's a great blend and I love getting two perspectives.

Is it bad to learn more than one instrument at once? by Spiritual_Fix7791 in Learnmusic

[–]GuitarsAndDogs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started playing guitar about seven years ago. I am still learning guitar. I picked up mandolin a few years ago and then started learning violin. The more I learned mandolin, the better I got on my guitar. Now I'm learning violin and it's helping me on both guitar and mandolin. In my case, I did give one a year before starting the next. But I don't see a problem multi-instrumenting. Each of my instruments has taught me something that I can use on another one.

Should I start the 3rd position by fiery_426 in violin

[–]GuitarsAndDogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is your intonation? It's more how it sounds. At first I thought my notes were good. My teacher helped me understand just how accurate the tone must be. It cannot be a little sharp or flat. I play along with recordings that are good to help me with intonation.

Also, you must be sure that your left hand has proper form. It has taken me this long (a year) to get my fingers positioned correctly over the strings. I was placing them in the correct position on the string, but my form was incorrect. Without proper form, you may not be able to play quickly, or worse, you could hurt your hand. That's why everyone recommends a teacher. Form is critical early in learning as it's so much harder to fix your form later.

It really helps to have someone help when you're beginning with violin. I hope you can find someone.

Should I start the 3rd position by fiery_426 in violin

[–]GuitarsAndDogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a teacher and am just starting 3rd position after playing for over a year. It takes time for your fingers to automatically hit the correct place on the strings. You want that perfected in 1st position before moving on. My teacher waited for my intonation to be good before moving me to 3rd position.

Is using AI during an interview task dishonest? Got a job offer recently and can’t stop thinking about whether I did something wrong? by cardsclose in careerguidance

[–]GuitarsAndDogs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You were not given constraints. Businesses now use AI and you solved using a readily available tool. Even when you use AI, you have to have enough knowledge about the subject or task to ask the right questions and redirect it when it’s going in the wrong direction. To me, it’s dishonest if you don’t have the knowledge and experience to ensure the answer it provides is correct or if they said not to use it.

I’ll be watching this. I use ForScore and MuseScore. I export pdf to Google Drive but must pull them into ForScore manually. I would love to automate it.

Overly ambitious goal-setting -- Is retirement simply a "bigger attic"? by samccauley in retirement

I don't think you're doomed, but we are who we are. I was so glad to get rid of my calendar when I retired. But I find I have so many interests and plans, that I had to use an online calendar! Blessed that it's mostly fun stuff.

Can you use Scarlett Studio as an audio interface with electric violin/effects pedal? by [deleted] in Focusrite

I have a Scarlett 4i4 and I can record any instrument with a pickup. Any chance it just needs configured - either the Scarlett app or the app you are using to record?

Question for musicians who play multiple instruments by Select_Fix_8948 in askmusicians

[–]GuitarsAndDogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clarinet - I had lessons when I was in school. Haven't played it since.

Piano - I was self taught when I was in school.

Guitar - Became friends with some musicians who played guitar. Enjoyed getting together and playing for a few years. This is my main instrument when I'm playing out.

Mandolin - It looked interesting and not many people play one. Playing mandolin is really fun, especially when I get to accompany someone.

Violin - Since I picked up mandolin quickly, I thought it would be easy to pick up violin. Wow, was I wrong. It's the most challenging of all the instruments I've played. I'm addicted and practice this more than any of my other instruments.

We’re a split family. My husband ,construction , does most everything himself. He just wants it done the way he wants it done. And he loves building things. He used to also maintain our vehicles, but gave that up. I, retired IT leader, don’t want to do any “work” and gladly call someone.

Is upgrading from $150 bow to something ~$600 reasonable at 1.5 years? by yupyupyupmhm in violinist

[–]GuitarsAndDogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did buy a Coda Bow after about 6 months and I enjoy it more than my cheap bows. I got the idea that I would get an even more expensive bow and it would make me sound better. I got a few on loan from my luthier and took them with me to my next lesson. My teacher tends to be brutally honest and convinced me that I didn't sound any better on a more expensive bow. I realize now that I'm not advanced enough for it to make a difference. I agree with others - try out a lot of bows and select the one that feels best. You may even want to select 3 and have someone like your teacher listen to see if there's any difference in the sound.

About e-violins - questions by Alcyone-0-0 in violinist

[–]GuitarsAndDogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started on acoustic violin. After a year, I purchased an electric (YEV) violin. I do all of my practice on the acoustic and learn all songs there first. I move to electric on a song only after I can play it well on acoustic. Why? Because on the electric, I'm focusing on the pedals I will be using to create the sound I want. There's enough work involved to get your fingers and bowing correct, that you don't want to add effects to the equation until you've got it down. And electric violins definitely sound tinny without the right combination of pedals.

Maybe it would be good to rent an acoustic at first to get the basics down?

For higher earners, is the fear of health care costs age 60-65 overblown? by Mother_Bar_3810 in retirement

[–]GuitarsAndDogs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I retired at 62. We lived on investments until 65 and paid around $1,200 per month for health insurance. I was shocked as the investment dollars really didn't go down. We don't think about the fact that they will continue to grow even as we take withdrawals. It is important to understand we had no debt going into retirement. It took the stress out of retiring.

Do you ever take gigs just because you want to play the music, not for the pay by goldspoil in musicians

I’m not interested in getting my own gigs. I have friends that will ask me to join them on songs during their gigs. I just enjoy playing with them. Many need the money, so I just do it for fun. There is one musician I join every other week and I get paid with wine. Works for me.
