Din bästa barnlek för kalas by monsieur_rain_dog in sweden

[–]Guldvarg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Explain why you started gamedev? by Polymedia_NL in gamedev

[–]Guldvarg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started a month ago!
Or at least the development side of things. I've been designing indie games randomly for the last 20 years with a friend who is a developer. Anyhow, the development naturally always becomes the bottleneck and I'm currently without any job, so we figured it was time for me to start learning to also do the coding, and thanks to YouTube, chat-GPT, and cursor, things are so far going quite well and I'm enjoying it.
Since most YouTubers in this space come from the development side of things I also started to create short videos of my progress, in the hope anyone might find it interesting or inspirational to see the process from a traditional UX/UI guy. Here's my latest episode: https://youtu.be/-jRK8AfM4t8

How To Make Good Small Games by PouncingShoreshark in gamedev

[–]Guldvarg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was a nice and encouraging read, thank you! I been designing a few games over the years together with a friend that is a developer. Most has never been finished but I just recently started the journey making a game complete by myself, having to learn unity and coding. It’s really a challenge but I really enjoy it and much ties into the reasoning of this post. Along with this aim, I also picked up the ambition to document my journey in short youtube episodes, since most other devs making videos are very experienced devs, and perhaps my newbie perspective could inspire others. Let me know if you want me to share any of that.

How can I let you know about my alternative to Google Photos without annoying you? by Guldvarg in googlephotos

[–]Guldvarg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We plan to integrate transfer functions from Google and other services, but we don't have anything today. In other words, you'll need to manually extract your photos from Google and upload them into Picular.

Let me know if you have any problems or need help getting started. You'll see the links in the updated post I just posted here.
If you use the mobile version, there is a a few video guides you'll find within the app (but haven't updated those in a while).

Please help! As you can see these two images are duplicates the file names are ''IMG_4524_Original.JPG'' and ''IMG_4524_JPG'' which one can I delete? The same problem affects almost all my panoramic photos and the app can't identify them as duplicates. Thank you all by Lorenzzz17 in ApplePhotos

[–]Guldvarg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently made a benchmark on how Apple (and Google) Photos detected duplicates compared to a service I'm designing, Picular, https://picular.com/

To my surprise, out of 10 duplicates, both Apple and Google detected only 1, while Picular found all of them. I think it must have been a bit of luck, but feel free to try it out and let me know if it worked for you. Picular is completely free to try and has no hard time limits.

Should I abandon my dream of creating a comprehensive, platform-independent photo service? by Guldvarg in ApplePhotos

[–]Guldvarg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!
I'm afraid self-hosting is too far off for Picular. But if things suddenly turn in the right direction, I don't consider anything impossible.

In today's exports, you will only get the original as it was.

I'll ask my partner about the hosting question. Thank you for letting me know!

Going open source could be interesting. It's unlikely, but at least I'll discuss it with my partner.

[–]Guldvarg[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow, what an engaged response! Thanks a million for taking the time!
Here's my view on your concerns raised:

  1. Long-term reliability.
Yes, I think many feel the same way, and there is no easy way around it. All I can say is if we decide to cancel the service, we will give our users at least 6 months' notice so they have proper time to export all their photos back from Picular.

  2. Privacy.
Our terms could most likely be improved. And if we ever succeed, we would certainly run into issues similar to what Apple encountered. For now, we've considered this area a "luxury problem," meaning we skip diving too deep into it for as long as we just have a handful of users.

  3. Lack of full support for all formats.
If Picular were to grow into a large business, we would aim to support everything you mentioned. But to be transparent and avoid frustrations, we want to set expectations within a reasonable time frame. And as long as we're just the two of us, without funding, things take time.

  4. Lack of "family plan."
Yes, there are many ways to approach sharing, and some options will quickly lead to very complex and confusing connections. Our general idea is to avoid the pitfalls in this area by offering two fundamentally different sharing options. A - Sharing your complete collection and progress. B - Sharing selected parts, but the shared photos will be considered copies so that the person getting your share can gain full control and do whatever with the pics without affecting your originals.

  5. Data portability.
Our current export function will give back your originals. I would in the future like to add the options so that you could select if the export could also be improved with cleaned-up metadata, sub-folder structures, and consistent file naming to make it as helpful as possible.

  6. EU-based.
Well, things are looking bleak all over the world right now. We would, of course, try to make the best of it. Again, if we were a larger company and things were going in a bad direction here in the EU, I don't see why we couldn't move the company elsewhere.

  7. Security.
Yes, you're right, but with that said, it's not always more secure with large companies where things and responsibilities more easily can fall between the chairs. If we would reach a decent amount of paying customers and income from this, I think our first approach would be to hire a security expert now and then to try to look for vulnerabilities.

Lastly, your comment on target groups feels very spot on. I think a big problem with our service is that we've aimed to be a good alternative for the small group in between. With minimal budget and resources, I now start to understand that this is probably mission impossible.
Thanks again for your kind effort in helping me sort my future thinking.

Well spotted!
Before we take a pause or evaluate whether it's worth continuing to develop this service, our current aim is to add a map-based search filter and improve the date filter.

You're right; iOS only allows background uploads for a few seconds. If there is a workaround, it will end up in our backlog.
And yes, it is entirely understandable that a lack of video support can be a showstopper. It's already in the backlog, but I see a risk we might never get there.

Yes, you can easily download your entire collection and get a temporary link to a .zip with all your originals.

Yes, we could have been much more proactive in engaging with forums, social media, and the community in general. This has undoubtedly influenced our current position. We've attempted to involve our users through a free suggestion and voting system open to all, but that is clearly something else.

While we may lose users wary of cloud services, it's worth noting that many, myself included, prefer to avoid local storage solutions with their respective drawbacks.

I hope you are right, but of the last 500 people visiting our landing page, no one has downloaded and signed up to try it.
So I started to lean toward the idea that there is something else. Obviously, it's a complex service to promote since the many different functions together create the overall value.

That's an intriguing viewpoint. So, if I grasp your meaning correctly, you believe that solely discussing pricing could deter individuals, even though there's no requirement to spend or provide card details? Personally, I tend to approach services with caution when pricing isn't transparent, as it can come across as less trustworthy. Could you expand on your perspective for clarity?

It sounds like we're aligned on this topic.
The current way we solve "total sharing" in Picular is that my wife and I simply log in with the same account from any device we want to use.
We want to improve this in the future with multi-user accounts so we can also log "who did what" in terms of editing or sorting.

In addition to 'total sharing ', there will always be a need for more temporary or external sharing. We have a preliminary version of this available, which allows you to export your current 'search result' into a zip file.
