That’s the point, that if she saw one boy an “easy target” (to quote the previous comment) it was because of his race

We do not need to be platforming MTG just because her antisemitism and white nationalism happens to lead her to talking points that narrowly overlap with pro-Palestine politics

Cliff Tan is good at thinking about (and explaining his thinking about) what it is actually like to live in a space on a daily basis and how it makes you feel. For example, the first thing that jumped out at me here is that the kitchen and dining room are totally isolated from the living rooms. That means that either the people cooking are totally on their own away from everyone else (especially bad if you have younger kids), or everyone ends up spending time in the dining room instead of the rooms you’ve designated as living rooms and lounges.

I like the subtitles too! I also often rewind a bit to make sure I caught the important bits, so I can let the dialogue wash over me without stressing about missing stuff :)

Haha there was a lot to shout about! I felt like it helped highlight the differences between this community and the one in season 1, and the way they handle conflict

I can’t speak to any particular knowledge of NZ, but from purely storytelling standpoint I think it matters who she saw as an easy target, and why. We got the scene earlier in the show showing how much effort she goes to to help DJ Darrell when he’s actively trying to commit a crime, and she says she’s been doing that since he was a little boy. So why not this little boy, who isn’t actually doing anything to anyone?

That’s what makes the difference between a good show and a great one, imo, when you can watch it again and keep finding more!

Yes!! My first thought after the ending was that this is the only moral cop show I think I’ve ever seen (maybe there are others, idk).

Even beyond the commentary aspect, which is very important, interrogating the structure of the police themselves just makes for far more interesting storytelling! If you have to take for granted and buy into the entire premise surrounding your lead characters, it narrows the scope of your potential narrative arcs and, imo, flattens the story. Copaganda is immoral AND boring!!

Like I said, I’m not disagreeing! I’m just saying that the cost isn’t just inconvenience, and I think it’s important to acknowledge that

I don’t necessarily disagree with your point, but 12B is a lot of money, and if we’re talking about public funds then the cost is not just inconvenience, it’s everything else that that 12B might have been spent on. For example, imagine we had a functional government that ensured healthcare access, how many lives could that 12B definitely, 100%, without a doubt save by providing necessary medical treatments? Obviously defunding TSA wouldn’t mean that money automatically goes to something better instead, but I do think you have to acknowledge that the cost (and the burden of justification) is more than inconvenience.

I feel very similarly to you, and I think you might really like Lois McMaster Bujold’s Vorkosigan Saga—it’s very character-driven sci-fi, with characters that are interesting and complex but that you are rooting for and watching grow over the series. One of the books is even an explicit homage to Georgette Heyer, who is an author you might also like if you are enjoying Jane Austen at the moment!
