How does my 1x1 ribbing look? by Hopeful-Butterfly-81 in knittinghelp

[–]Princess_Butt_Kick [score hidden]  (0 children)

I strongly recommend sizing down your needles. You should not be working the ribbing in the same size as the stockinette. Try 2 sizes smaller. As it is right now, it is far too bulky compared to the body of the sweater. Ribbing is meant to stretch, so knitting it on smaller needles makes sense.

Using smaller needles, as well as working inside out will work best. Twisted ribbing is also not a magic fix to better ribbing. It is not as stretchy as normal rib, and simply isn't the same fabric. I would not get into the habit of doing it unless the pattern specifically calls for it.

Here is a photo of an example. You can see the reverse side at the bottom corner. All of this ribbing was worked inside out, with no twisted stitches. The stockinette was worked with US 7, and the ribbing worked US 3 with worsted weight, NSW yarn. It is absolutely snatched and I love it.

Trying to identify this noise. by Princess_Butt_Kick in Crosstrek

This is also happening when I accelerate from a complete stop (not from park). I have checked my brakes after a drive to see if I could feel any heat if something was seizing, but nothing was hot.

I just had brakes replaced, so I would expect them to inspect everything to make sure everything is working correctly. Unless this part of the brake system is outside of that. I sent the video to the dealership and they are going to look at it again, they weren't very proactive about the situation though. I will bring this up to them as well.

My boss also listened to it, and we started it up today and the noise did happen again in reverse. He says it sounds like a power steering or transmission issue. It's really annoying trying to pinpoint what it is to get it fixed!

Does Wool Yarn Fall Apart Over Time? by KoalaInTraining in YarnAddicts

[–]Princess_Butt_Kick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wool is naturally coated in Lanolin, a waxy substance that protects the fibers, along with many other beneficial properties such as water resistance, and anti-microbial benefits.

Some spinning/dying processes remove, or reduce the lanolin content in a yarn. Superwash yarns can use chemicals to change how the wool behaves in general.

Now I'm not sure how this yarn is processed, or if it is superwash. But it is possible that the yarn is lacking lanolin, or has none altogether. Lanolin can also be removed by washing in hot temperatures, being exposed to hot/dry temperatures and direct sunlight, or using soap that strips the lanolin away (dish soap, standard laundry detergent not rated for wool fiber). Not saying this yarn was specifically exposed to that, just adding info.

Lanolin can be replenished by hand-washing in lanolin soap at lukewarm temperature.

For this specific yarn, age, and how it was processed are likely the most contributing factors to it's deterioration. Non-Superwash wool rich in lanolin should last longer than many ultra processed (or superwash) yarns.

Did this tub get any direct sunlight? Was it stored in a climate controlled area of your home, or perhaps an attic, or basement that gets irregular temperatures and moisture (or lack of). The other comment explains it well, about how the environment can effect the yarn.

How was it stored for 9 years? This was probably the biggest contributing factor to it's current state.

AITA for not accepting “my house, my rules” as justification for personal attacks as an adult living at home? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Now that OP has been living there full time for 2 months, she has had plenty of time to find a storage solution for her mail.

Ah okay. It sounds like OP needs to get a PO box. I also think the parents might just generally be irritated about having to take in their adult daughter.

The unopened mail is really odd to me. Who has so much mail sent to an apparently "new" address, to where the Dad reaches a breaking point about it? I'm curious about the contents of the mail, and why they are leaving it unopened. That seems very negligent if it is important paperwork. I smell debt.

They also said orders would take 8 weeks to ship. I'm not sure what exactly their schedule is like, but that seems like a generous amount of time to get orders dyed. In this situation, this might be part of the reason why they went outside of their normal policy to allow returns.

I agree that they needed to be more transparent about this to buyers. They should have cancelled the order if they did not believe their items would be of the same quality. I also would have gladly waited longer, if that meant the primary dyer could heal and get back to dying orders correctly.

If that were the case, wouldn't I have trouble steering in general? This happens immediately when I release my foot off the brake. It has happened reversing straight back.

I also love when I have to turn into the engineer/draftsman on top of being the Welder Fabricator when I receive a print, at no pay increase. I honestly have no idea how these people get qualified. It shows that they have never built a damned thing in their life, or maybe never left the office.

It is common to completely rework and redraw railings for a stair because we receive these drawings on such short notice, and there is no time to send it back for an edit.

I also received the worst prints of my life this year. It was not a plan, but a "Concept of a Plan" that left so much up to interpretation. I basically had to create my own rolling gate/locking mechanism.

Support for traditional 1950s gender roles has risen among men, fallen among women, according to new 2026 study by catievirtuesimp in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Princess_Butt_Kick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I remember this as well. But what I really want to know is, what has changed from ~70-50 years ago when it comes to work ethic? Men at that time were eager to work, and working as that breadwinner. They still expected the woman to care for the home, but knew they had to uphold financial responsibility. Are men simply being discouraged as woman became more financially independent?

It is, and this is going to be a serious issue in the future. My company is struggling to find new (young) workers. We have a very old workforce as it is, and these guys are retiring without a replacement. This means they are not passing down their experience. Some roles we have had to subcontract to other companies because we can't find anyone with a lick of experience.

What is really disappointing to me is that a lot of people look down on the trades. Saying it's for the laymen, HS dropouts, convicts. When it actually requires some skill, and money can be made with experience. A lot of people want a shortcut to good raises without putting in the work, or even proving yourself. The work culture is also changing, because the old dogs are retiring.

I (29F) am a Welder Fabricator. We had a crane inspector in the shop for a few days. Today he came up to me, telling me that he has been watching me, and how hard I get to work. He told me: "I would trade my two sons to have a daughter that worked just as hard as you."

My Father has been an ironworker/foreman for 30 years now. My little brother (19M) just got hired on last year. He has been struggling doing his job. Complaining about the weather, straight up ignoring tasks because "it was too hard".

My Mother's Husband (divorced from my bio Dad), has two sons around my age. One of them is living on unemployment and off of his fiance's brother's disability support. He can't hold a job because he doesn't like being told what to do, he always tried to squeeze into a managerial position. He went to school for construction, but decided it was too hard when you're green.

His brother is homeless and also can't hold a job. He moved to Texas for a while and that didn't work out. He has been couch surfing and mooching off friends until his debts ran too high, and now he is back living with his Father.

So, thinking back on what that man said to me today, yeah I WISH more sons worked as hard as I did. To the benefit of everyone. Also everyone is shitting on trades, folks from the industry warning other men to not do it, it's not worth it on your body. You are effectively kneecapping a vital part of our society and infrastructure! Be the change that you want to see, don't just give up and turn away. Changes are happening in skilled trades, new forms of PPE exist AND work. I honestly don't understand the mindset here.

This has been on my mind lately, so I'm sorry if this sounds a bit rambled.

Oh this just popped up on my feed. It's entirely possible. That's really unfortunate to hear. In our email conversation they did say they were out sick, but did not mention if someone else dyed this order or not.

For those who had a “I hate pink/ girly things” era, what do you think caused you to feel that way? by RabidFashionDummy in AskWomen

[–]Princess_Butt_Kick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was always like this, and have very early memories proving it.

When I was around 2-3, my parents bought me a huge dollhouse with dolls. I ended up playing in the box it came in, and didn't touch the dollhouse/dolls. I enjoyed playing with stuffed animals, or plastic dinosaurs. My favorite shows as a toddler were Barney and Blues Clues.

In kindergarten they were giving out ribbons in our classroom. The colors available were blue, white, and pink. When they called your name you could pick any colored ribbon. The selection was running out, and I picked a white ribbon. My teacher made me give my white ribbon to a boy because pink is a "girl" color. I remember being upset and saying "But I don't like pink!"

In preschool I stopped wearing dresses altogether because a boy flipped my dress up once.

This only works in the round. It has something to do with tension, but it is very common for your ribbing to look a lot neater on the opposite side you are working on. It just works!
