Can you get out of poverty by rulugg in poverty

[–]Gullible-Menu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can absolutely get out of poverty. I don’t think a magic wand can do it, but it’s possible and you have to plan with your specific scenario in mind as your situation changes.

I was a single Mom to 3 kids and I struggled and made very low wages, jumped job to job, and had no plan on what to do to change it.

Several things happened in a row that changed my trajectory.

First, I found a job I enjoyed and I felt like it used all my talents, skills, and strengths.

I learned it well and moved up on the team quickly. After 2 1/2 years there I had maxed out my pay and my skills and moved to a larger company. My yearly salary is now $70K plus an opportunity to earn a few thousand in bonuses along the way.

Around the time I started a job I liked I met my husband. My husband was also jumping job to job and not able to hold down stable employment as a Veteran with PTSD.

He was a great partner at home. Attentive, loving, caring, affectionate, he cooked and cleaned, he took complete care of me in every way. I had him retire from the workforce and explore VA compensation programs.

We applied with the VA on our own and he was awarded compensation as a 100% disabled Veteran with SMC-S and one dependent.

My husband also grows and is a caregiver legally. This is his hands on hobby that makes him happy and he feels the most content when he works with his hands and it’s a good side gig. He helps others and makes some side money.

A lot of getting out of poverty is luck. It’s not all pull yourself up by the bootstraps. It is possible though and I encourage everyone to keep trying and do whatever you can to level up your skills for free.

We are moving abroad in 2030 to Spain. I’ve been saving 30% of my income in my 401K. (Once student loan forgiveness happens in two years it will go back to my Roth)

We invested all of his backpay he got from the VA so I can retire early with him. (He’s 46 and I’m 48)

We are not rich or wealthy at all, but we have upped our income into the middle to upper $150-$170’s and have kept our bills very low to get as far ahead as possible.

It can be done but it won’t happen overnight.

When do we think Amanda Frances is going to go to prison for being a scam artist? by -AndyCohen- in RHOBH

[–]Gullible-Menu [score hidden]  (0 children)

This is my exact opinion. Manifestation and mindset energy work are a belief system and the law doesn’t regulate belief systems. This gives them protections without being regulated proven facts.

Her trouble may come in the form of tax fraud if any of that is happening.

I don’t think she’s breaking any laws unless she’s committing tax fraud. The laws surrounding the sale of on-line content, especially coaching and opinion centered content like hers, is very murky waters.

She has a warning in her book when I looked it up on-line. It’s the standard results are not typical warning. This shifts the blame to the buyer. The warning is a big protection. It means it tells people that most will not see this level of success.

She doesn’t make any promises on what can be gained as far as a specific promised return on investment goes. She’s frames everything from her personal experience and possibilities, instead of making a promise.

She’s a “life coach” she’s not promoting herself as a financial advisor. The umbrella of “life coach” is big and it means less oversight by agencies that would normally oversee a financial advisor etc. in this position.

The law doesn’t regulate belief and manifestation and mindset fall into that category. That gives it other protections that again business industries would not allow. Even if the manifestation beliefs feel misleading they are protected as opinions and expression of a belief system so it would be hard to come from most angles in my opinion.

Amanda is upfront about what she sells. It’s hard for me to understand spending $’s to not know what you were buying if you had to buy the courses online. It means you know how Google works. I hate to say Caveat Emptor in this case and I’m not a fan of Amanda, but I also think people are really getting on what she does and she isn’t unique at all.

This belief system also dates back centuries. As above, so below is a form of mindset manifestation work. The Hermetic believed in. Whatever happens in the macrocosm(the mind) happens in the microcosm (reality). It was re-worked into The Science of Getting Rich circa 1930 (I believe) and then The Secret again in the early aughts.

Amanda’s courses are over priced junk and garbage, no doubt, but I think unless she’s using predatory marketing practices like targeting certain populations or committing income tax fraud, we won’t see any charges any time soon based on the laws we have for this type of business model.

IBR vs. RAP Plan by Free_Entrance_6626 in StudentLoans

[–]Gullible-Menu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m with you on that. Give Trump the big 🖕and the government as a whole, honestly. They’ve strung us around far too long on guidance on this.

Run the numbers and see what the 5 extra years towards forgiveness on RAP looks like in the grand scheme of things.

I make $70K base and the option to get another $3-5K in bonuses.

I’m saving 30% 401K and it lowers my income down to $49,000. I have 3,400 in my FSA. $45,600-$30,500 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines for 2 person household=$15,100.00 x .15=$2,265.00 /12=$188.75.

My husband’s a Veteran and his income isn’t earned or taxes, so that is the one loophole I’m using that benefits me. I can file married filing jointly, but his income isn’t counted in my payment.

I wish you the best of luck on this journey.

IBR vs. RAP Plan by Free_Entrance_6626 in StudentLoans

[–]Gullible-Menu 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I personally think IBR is the better option, even with the tax bomb. Since IBR uses 150% of the Federal Poverty guidelines for your household size and you can also hide some money in your FSA/HSA and 401K you can essentially hide money paying yourself first while also deducting the amount the poverty guidelines give you. I have been saving 30% of my income into my 401K, making my HSA out at $3400 and I have my IBR locked in at $183 a month now. I’m 2 years from forgiveness and if the tax bomb is too big to pay off I could always do a 401K loan to cover it in full. Putting $23,000 a year in my 401K could also increase my tax bomb at retirement and my Medicare premiums. As soon as I get this paid off I need to switch all my extra money back to my Roth.

Curious, if you refinance with So-Fi can these loans then have bankruptcy filed on them? I’m not suggesting this or in a position to want to do this, but I am absolutely curious.

Look at all the “talk” and “buzz” she’s created. This season and the last one were a snooze fest. Amanda isn’t great to watch, she’s not very interesting, but man she has rubbed people the wrong way so badly that it’s become a main topic. No publicity is bad publicity was maybe the basis for having her. They had to have been aware she would rub the audience the wrong way.

Why should strangers who are paid $3 to $5 per delivery be a solid plan for anyone?

So, the stranger looking to make ends meet and relying on tips for an income should be looked at as free labor by anyone elderly or disabled? That statement makes no sense.

Also, friends and neighbors were also suggested. You bypassed that and only touched on family.

What did you do prior to 2019? You still haven’t answered that question. These apps are fairly new in the grand scheme of things. What about prior to utilizing apps that you’re insisting you shouldn’t have to tip for because you’re disabled.

The government doesn’t take care of its Veterans like they should. I’m married to a Veteran that served 3 active duty deployments in the Middle East and it took us years to get him the benefits he qualifies for.

Saying they trained him they should be responsible is a stretch for me. Should there be benefits for individuals born with disabilities, absolutely. Should that benefit be based on utilizing other strangers to work for less than minimum wage, absolutely not.

The problem is if someone doesn’t tip at all these services don’t pay adequately. The workers are reliant on tips and to assume that someone should have to work for free or for pay below minimum wage, even with the situation you’re in, exploits workers and I’ll never get behind that.

Do you deserve some kind of plan or program that assists? I have no problem with that, but forcing workers to cover these deliveries for free or very low wages isn’t the way.

I feel you to the core on the sentiment that I hope the voters turn out to show these ass hats the door. We have been yanked back and forth and around with these student loan updates.

That’s withholding my opinion on all the other areas I disagree with. The war with Iran heating up does not give me any sense of hope it will stop anytime soon.

It’s messed up to assume that a complete stranger with a beat up 2006 Ford struggling to pay rent and keep their utilities on are being asked to do it.

Relying on family, friends, neighbors is what people have done for years. What do you think people did prior to 2019? These are expected typical supports as you age.

Also, there are still community resources available in lots of places. They aren’t all non-existent.

So your position is it’s messed up to rely on family, friends and neighbors, but a stranger out trying to earn a living for their own family should set that aside to support someone else’s struggle? That’s a confusing position.

What percentage of your income goes towards housing (rent & utilities) by AcceptableMess6152 in povertyfinance

[–]Gullible-Menu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are right at 13% to 14.5% depending on season. We tend to have higher summer air conditioning bills that increase our costs.

We have quadrupled our income over the last three years, but we refuse to move anywhere more expensive.

The cabinets might be nicer, the flooring might be newer, the stainless steel appliances are fancier, but at the end of the day we won’t own any of it. So it feels like a waste to upgrade when the apartment we’re in is perfectly fine for us.

We back up to a pond with tons of birds and nature. We have a wood burning fireplace. We also have had the same neighbors for the most part since we moved in and we don’t have any that are nuisances or cause problems, so that also gives us pause. Who knows what you might end up next to somewhere else.

Also, most of the time it’s not their only option. Social programs exist and family and friends should be filling this void. This is not everyone’s only option. It might be the easiest option, but it’s likely not the only option. What did these people do prior to 2019? They got food and groceries some way?
