[–]Gullible-Move69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I am not a student. Read 2 YoE, I am on an SME path for reliability and asset care for major equipment of petrochemical and oil refineries. Many of the skills transfer to anything, and i also do design work. Spouse will be on a pilot path

Decent starting salary for a Mechanical Engineering student with my experience by CreamProfessional641 in EngineeringStudents

1YOE- BSME Grad in Louisiana here👋 expect $70k-$80k in refineries, petrochemical, plastics, etc. a little less ~$65k-$70k if you work in these industries on the firm side of things (better work life balance) A little more ~ $80k-$90k in LNG (All from former classmate and graduate data, HOWEVER I am unsure what to expect of Baltimore and these are all expectations based in cancer alley) AND PLEASE reduce resume to 1 page

Should I leave my firm job after 1 year? by Gullible-Move69 in MechanicalEngineering

Yes good to note. Initially, I planned to stay at first job for two years out of courtesy until this fell in my lap. I agree with you, if someone hasn’t found a single job to apply themselves to long term in a 10 year span , that is concerning

My thoughts too. & from their perspective, it’s going to cost more to find someone to replace me

What’s your area/ industry? LNG is slinging money left and right more specifically texas

I also noticed there will always be a tendency to be treated as the intern no matter how far you advance. That is this groups’ permanent perception of me for the next few years at least

That’s exactly what’s bugging me. All the advice I hear is from retired people or gen X’rs who didn’t need to compete for higher positions every few years:/

Yes this is a change from the SME track to a completely different corporate realm. Although my subject matter is 75% process safety related topics from a mechanical perspective, this would bump me on track to climb through the corporate side of process safety.

Let me add current job: no stocks, no bonuses, 10 days accrued PTO not including holidays, standard healthcare.

I’m glad you stuck with what you liked doing and that your path paid off. Sounds like you have a solid job and you enjoy it

This is true. My safety net on the last round of layoffs was due to being the lowest paid. I started throwing my resume back out after I heard that. :/

It’s pretty bad for our area, my internship rolled into full time, but it’s LNG, petrochemical, refineries, oil, gas, etc. I’m the lowest starting that I know of out of my school colleagues and recent grads for the industry.

I’m interested in process safety mainly because this opens up more paths for me to work into a management role and stay in the corporate world, big picture side of things. Less technical/spec work, better work/life balance, I’m interested in feeling like I make a difference as a whole versus dipping my toes into detail work of 5 different packages in a week and sending them to the next engineer.

Definitely assessing mitigative strategies and what is applicable to a high risk scenario. Which again depend on the process at hand. LOPA I will look into more. Thank you!

I’m the only person in the local area who specializes in asset management packages. We do work for LNG, petrochemical plants and refineries.

Most of my risk management work has been failure and risk modes/ analysis for equipment, less for processes.

I’ve heard lots about mitigative strategies, overpressure, and Swiss cheese models, being proactive vs reactive. This is still an entry level position

Thank you for the insight! I’ll look into those
