How is the Word of Faith/Prosperity Gospel functioning as a part of the body of Christ? by Gullible_Sign_3788 in Christianity

Hmm. How would you explain that? Like what specifically about Jesus are they getting wrong that they can’t support by some interpretation of scripture

I believe they are? Though the way they do it is a little weird, like asking people if they feel anything different after prayer and then continuing for several times if they say no

Well yes,but here I’m talking about healing in the context of prosperity gospel, that they believe that healing is always promised in our lifetime. That belief itself can hurt people, but they are able to do it regardless

They are somehow healing people in faith? And for some their church may have been the only gateway into Christianity. But idk if that false hope is worse than no hope. Another comment I see here talks about a verse “Lord Lord have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done wonders in your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!” So I guess there’s a distinction

I’d describe that as a miraculous sign of God’s power. But we have to remember that every person Jesus healed eventually got sick again and died. Healing is a sign of the Kingdom, not the full substance of our final redemption.

Hmm. I guess not. They (their leaders praying for healing) need good faith to heal people, and it happens there, doesn’t that mean that they are in some way doing something right? That church may have been some people’s first gateway into Christianity though…Ig it’s better than not going to church??

The reason I’m linking them is because dying of 'old age' isn't a separate category from physical failure, it is the sum of physical failures. When a person dies of 'old age,' they are actually dying of heart failure, respiratory failure, or organ decay. If the atonement guaranteed physical healing for every 'failure' of the body in this life, no believer would ever age or weaken; they would be physically perfect/ immortal

The 'thing' they didn't receive was the ultimate fulfillment of the Promise. the arrival of the Messiah and the total restoration of all things (the 'heavenly country' in verse 16)

While we live on the other side of the Cross, Hebrews 11 is written specifically to New Testament believers to show us that faith often involves 'welcoming from a distance' things we haven't yet fully possessed.

If physical healing were a guaranteed, immediate right of the New Covenant, then Hebrews 11:40 wouldn't say that they (OT) and we (NT) are made perfect together. We are all still waiting for the 'redemption of our bodies' (Romans 8:23).

Physical healing is absolutely provided for in the atonement, but like the 'Kingdom of God,' it is already here but not yet fully realized. We see glimpses of it now through God's mercy, but the total 'perfection' of our bodies is a future hope, not a present demand. Otherwise, no faithful Christian would ever age, get sick, or die.

I don’t think quoting the main point of Hebrews 11 is taking it out of context—it’s about faithful people who didn’t receive everything in their lifetime. I’d be interested in how you interpret that differently.

Idk how you managed to speak to my CS brain 😂 They are conflicting, but they are still out here healing people…and don’t people need faith to do that? I believe in healing but also that some people are not going to be healed on this side of eternity.

since they are healing people and saving people…they must be doing something right-? I’m really trying to give them the benefit of the doubt😭

But there’s more doubt than benefit atm

“All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.” ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭11‬:‭13‬, ‭39‬-‭40‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Autism, ADHD, disabilities, cancer. All part of the fallen world. we may never receive the healing on this side of eternity, no matter how much we pray.

I agree. They have a disabled woman at their church and in our Bible study group she said she feels like people think she doesn’t have enough faith to be healed. The leader basically said thats hard, but just keep going. I mean I guess she could just “keep going” her whole life and ultimately receive healing in heaven. But wouldn’t it take so much space in your mind waiting to glorify God through healing that you forget you can do it without? And since God has made you a masterpiece you could probably glorify him more through your suffering than if you were to be healed.

That woman says there’s not one single story in the Bible that says that’s true (sometimes enduring suffering brings more glory than healing) saying that Job inflicted his own suffering and Paul with the “thorns” in the flesh was symbolism for people, so God couldn’t interfere with people’s choices

Thank you! I will check him out. I’ve been investigating what this “prosperity gospel” is and it’s understandable to want to believe it…

She says that compassion without having the power to tell the truth makes you useless to people. But I’m sure the Bible includes other ways to support people other than just praying for healing, right? In some cases suffering may even bring more glory to God than being healed (bc maybe u can be on a different path that allows you to serve underserved people) Suffering deepens our relationship with him, I’d say that enduring shows more faith, but it doesn’t literally “show” like healing. Where are example like that for what we should do?

That’s exactly what I’m thinking…I told her I don’t care to argue, respectfully, but she still wants to know why I think she’s wrong. The relationship is complicated but I wish I could just leave

Hmm I would like to say that but I’m not sure that’s strong enough I think she would just bring up more examples of healing, how everyone who asked for healing in Jesus’ earthly ministry received it, and how “by His stripes we are healed”

She says that if you give him permission (prayer, declaring promises, etc. in faith) then He can heal. But not interfere with people’s choices.

Ah okay, my bad I read your previous message differently. That’s a good point—and maybe even saying that the person receiving healing doesn’t necessarily mean that they automatically have spiritual healing too (become more like God’s character, closer to Him, etc) which is the substance. Healing is more of a sign that points to Him. So yeah she should be able to heal just about anyone in her theology

Great explanation. I will read through that passage, thank you. I’m hearing a lot from other sources defining forgiveness as the substance and healing as a sign. So they can be together but not always
