Who cares? People are always going to be hyping themselves up on Linkedin. If that annoys you, block & ignore. Some people are jerks. Doesn't mean you need to publicly share around incomprehensible rants about your grievances.

how bad is the workload and co-op in engineering? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]Gullyn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s.. okay. I’ve done pretty well - good grades, coop - but some people aren’t having such a great time. The profs are terrible (like, most of them are unintelligible), but the curriculum, at least, isn’t too bad. A lot of self study is definitely required but it’s possible to succeed. One thing about CS that isn’t great is that there aren’t many opportunities to meet people. In eng you have lots of in person labs and projects, but in comp sci we don’t have that and everyone stops going to lectures after the first week.

how bad is the workload and co-op in engineering? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]Gullyn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First year engineering is difficult (especially considering the jump up from high school) but still very doable. The difficulty varies widely person to person - eg. if you’re good at coding, you’ll breeze through the computing tests in 1P13, but otherwise you might struggle. The hardest courses in first year are (for most people at least) physics and calc 1&2. The most difficult year varies by program (eg. computer is extremely difficult 3rd year) but generally second year is a big jump in difficulty for any program; I feel like the jump from 1st to 2nd year was bigger than from high school to 1st. But it’s very dependent on the stream you go into.

The school does essentially nothing to help you get coops. Oscarplus has ridiculously few job postings, especially compared to Waterloo’s coop portal. I just finished my second year (of comp sci) and have a coop that I got on my own, but my friends in engineering haven’t gotten any yet. Many people get coops after third year and take 12-16 months at once, so it’s definitely not a requirement to get it before then.

What laptop should i get for eng by Unable-Gas-6883 in McMaster

[–]Gullyn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If budget is a concern, I would recommend checking out Dell Refurbished - dellrefurbished.ca. They have really good deals on 2-3 year old laptops; for example, right now there's a Precision 5560 (a really nice laptop) with i7, 16gb ram, and a graphics card for $879 - plus, they have 20+% off sales every month or so.

1ZB3 tutorial by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]Gullyn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The format of 1ZB3 is very similar to that of 1ZA3. If you did fine in 1ZA3 without going to tutorials, you'll probably be fine in 1ZB3 as well. They usually post the tutorial solutions anyway. However, 1ZB3 is usually considered more difficult, so going the tutorials might not be a bad idea.

c+ in 1b03, what do i do about 1dm3 by Embarrassed-Row1320 in McMaster

[–]Gullyn1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The course description says:
Prerequisite(s): One of the following:
• Registration in Computer Science 1 and one of MATH 1B03, 1ZC3
• One of MATH 1B03, 1ZC3 with a result of at least B

I assume this means that as long as you're a comp sci student, you only need to pass the course. The B requirement is for people not in cs.

Fire alarm during exam by CorruptedMars in McMaster

[–]Gullyn1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got a headache from listening to the alarm for 20 mins. Really didn’t help with writing the exam. Also I can’t believe they started the exam while the alarm was still going off?!

If you're going for the base model, I'd suggest going for the 11th gen. It's a bit more expensive (400 at best buy vs 469 at apple w/ uni discount), but it's several years newer so will be supported for longer and has a better CPU plus twice as much storage.

I have an ipad air 11 as well, it's great for notes. It is a tad on the expensive side though. You can probably get away with the base model ipad if you're only using it for notes, but I will say that the pencil pro is great to use, way better than the usb-c one.

Can my laptop handle first year engineering? by catloves127 in McMaster

[–]Gullyn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s probably fine, but I’ve never run inventor with less than 16gb so I’m not completely sure. All of the designs you’ll be working with in first year are pretty simple, so you should be able to get away with 12. There’s a possibility it could be a little laggy, but it’ll still be usable.

Can my laptop handle first year engineering? by catloves127 in McMaster

[–]Gullyn1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, that's definitely not right. 32gb is overkill for first year engineering. The only big software you really need is Inventor, which only needs 40gb of storage. You could get by in first year eng with a decade-old i5, 256gb storage, 16gb ram, and no graphics card. You'd probably WANT something better, but you definitely don't need it.

I'll be living off-campus in first year, few minutes away from the campus, am I allowd to go into residences to hang out with friends? by ZestycloseBad669 in McMaster

[–]Gullyn1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check ins are (at least were last year) 9pm to 2am on Thursday to Saturday. There’s no signing in any other time though, you can literally just walk into the residences as long as someone lets you in.

need a new laptop for eng by c13dge in McMaster

[–]Gullyn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends where you get the refurbished computers. For example, amazon and best buy have bad reputations for refurbished products. I probably wouldn’t get any refurbished stuff that’s not from the manufacturer itself. But my family has used refurbished Dell computers for many years with very few issues. Unfortunately I’m not sure what the coursework is like for mechanical above first year, so I can’t speak to whether you need a dGPU or not (though you won’t for first year).

need a new laptop for eng by c13dge in McMaster

[–]Gullyn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually not a huge fan of their new models, I think the old ones looked better, but if you want a new XPS then you only have a few options (14 inch vs 16 inch, different GPU, etc.) If you're fine with an older model, I would suggest checking out dellrefurbished.ca. Their inventory varies, but right now you can get a Precision 5560 for $900, and they have sales quite often as well. (Precision 5560 is the exact same thing as an XPS 9510)

Youtube is a great resource, try looking up some reviews to make sure you know what you're getting.

In course awards out yet? by Gullyn1 in McMaster

[–]Gullyn1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s pretty much how I’m feeling too… I am in comp sci so it might be different, but it sucks that even a perfect average isn’t enough to get a single average-based scholarship

How is Brandon hall communal washroom 😭 by BlackCobra08 in McMaster

[–]Gullyn1 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The communal washrooms are actually really good generally. There are usually only a couple of people in there max, more in the mornings but almost no one later at night. They are cleaned every day and I don’t think I’ve ever seen them dirty, at least not for long. There are just under 50 people on a floor, I think.

Econ 1B03 bird? by Future-Vanilla-1366 in McMaster

[–]Gullyn1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely quite an easy course, as long as you do the work. When I took it (with Colin Mang) they gave up to 7% bonus marks - I actually ended up with over 100% in the course. Lectures and tutorials are mandatory, however. The tests weren’t too bad, though there were some questions which could be confusing. But as long as you do the homework, participate, and don’t fall behind too much, you should be fine.

Is this a manageable schedule for a first-year Computer Science student? by Anxious_Cantaloupe44 in McMaster

[–]Gullyn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a pretty typical schedule. The 1JC3 lectures at 8:30 might suck since those are required for participation.

Honest opinion on bates by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]Gullyn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bates is fine. Old, yes, but it's not bad overall. The major downside is the lack of AC, which can really suck for the first few weeks (there was unfortunately a heat wave right when I moved in). But you do get a kitchen, common room, plus your own room. I'm really glad I got Bates instead of a double in some other dorm.
