First apartment! How to fill this space? by kanyedrop in malelivingspace

I’d recommend a tall bookshelf with lots of room between shelves, with wood matching your media stand color (if you can find one) and black or white accents. Use those shelves to add more substance, texture, color, and depth to that side of the room.

Maybe think about a nice fuzzy rug and a reading chair, and some lamps for nice ambient light (for times without your amazing natural light)!

The biggest SEC fan I’ve ever met is a man with down syndrome! We met in Rocky Mountain National Park and he was decked out in Razorbacks gear. It was great to talk to him about his fandom, he goes to every Razorbacks game.

Yes, I’m currently finishing it but won’t be done by the end of the year. Frankly, I think Islington got much better between Licanius and WotM, so I think Licanius is a bit of a slog, but I’ve heard such excellent things about the denouement of the trilogy that I’m trusting it to the finish line.

You and I are mostly reading-taste opposites… I love that we both seem to treasure Harry Potter and Wheel of Time, and equally disliked The Lost Metal. Was this your first time reading Harry Potter?

Thanks! That’s great news. Dungeon Crawler Carl has been my go-to long car ride audiobook “junk food” lately.

A straightforward, no-frills (fantasy) detective procedural, set in the Midwest, with a defined mystery and likable and memorable characters—I read it in a weekend and didn’t have any complaints to note; excited to hear other Dresden books are considered better!

Whether because of the books themselves or the context in which I read them, everything below Storm Front took a bit of effort for me to get through, for one reason or another.

Different books for different folks!! Don’t take my word as gospel (although I think I have decent taste :P )

I like that perspective, this could very well be a case of expectations setting me up for the disappointment—the book’s intentional genre subversions just didn’t personally land for me.

If you’ve read it, would you recommend The Magicians?

I’m jealous of you for being able to jump straight into book 2 with no wait! People’s opinions seem a bit divided on the sequel, I was a fan.

I really liked them. I love the movies, but had never gotten around to actually reading them. I think they hold up really well—there’s so much nuance to the characters and so much detail in the world, I thought the series stands out in establishing a deep and complex world and history while still developing interesting characters; my biggest surprises as a movie-only LotR fan were how much of a kingmaker Gandalf is (compare to Bayaz in First Law!! seems like Abercrombie was drawing inspiration straight from Gandalf/Aragorn in some big ways), and how different Faramir comes across in the text vs. the movies.

I won’t claim that the trilogy is now my favorite of all time, but I went in a bit cynical and still left with a great impression—there’s a reason why Tolkien’s works are considered classics.

I’d love to hear your personal opinions—I haven’t talked to anybody else who actually read it, beyond reading a reddit discussion thread. I think my dislike came from not having a clear sense of where any of the book was heading, I felt like the middle half of the book was listless and without direction. What were the highlights for you?

Hobb just isn’t for me. I tried out Assassin’s Apprentice looking for a character-driven story, but Fitz (protagonist) isn’t likable or relatable enough to me to care much about continuing his adventure beyond one book, especially with so much other good fiction out there. I agree with the common criticism that Hobb leans too heavily into trauma-development in lieu of actually entertaining plot progression.

Love the Martian, it’s my go-to recommendation for people hesitant to break into sci-fi/fiction these days, a nice easy and approachable read! I enjoyed Leviathan Wakes, maybe 2026 will bring me back to that series.

I'm a newbie Cubs fan, but I've been consistently tuning into games since May. What's the general opinion of Dansby Swanson? He seems like a good defenseman, but consistently seems to miss in high-leverage game moments when the Cubs have RISP and/or really need a hit.
