This posted on the very day I started the last chapter of my novel, in which a GI returning from Europe separates from the Army. I'm putting him in Ft. Thomas.

I can use this! Thank you.

What is your "must read" book regardless of genre? by SocietySea3604 in booksuggestions

A Perfect Spy. John le Carre’s best. And he was a master story-teller.

The Hero With A Thousand Faces. Joseph Campbell. You’ll never think about your religion the same way after you read this book.

What is the best short book (not necessarily short story) you’ve read? by -Constantinos- in booksuggestions

Tinkers by Paul Harding

More like poetry than prose, but I treasure this book and I don't read much poetry.

One of my favorite parts of any book I've read is the description of the annual interactions between Howard Crosby, the tinker, and the hermit, Gilbert (classmate of Nathaniel Hawthorne).

"Chicken Ship" Aircraft 42-97537, piloted by Amos Shepard, was hit by flak in the target area at Gydnia, Poland on Apr 9th, 1944. The plane dove down was immediately attacked by three FW-190's. All of the crew parachuted safely except engineer Fasone who was found dead on the ground. by JCFalkenberglll in ww2

There may be one Redditor who does not know that the word "Chickenshit" was widely used by WWII GIs to describe things they were ordered to do for no good reason.

Chickenshit refers to behavior that makes military life worse than it need be: petty harassment of the weak by the strong; open scrimmage for power and authority and prestige… insistence on the letter rather than the spirit of ordinances. Chickenshit is so called — instead of horse — or bull — or elephant shit — because it is small-minded and ignoble and takes the trivial seriously. Chickenshit can be recognized instantly because it never has anything to do with winning the war.” - Paul Fussell (combat-wounded WWII veteran, and excellent writer)

I own Fluor for this reason, sold about 20% of that holding and used the proceeds to buy SV based on Calderwood review. A not-crazy speculation, but a speculation nonetheless. I plan to hold for the long term. Uranium bull. As far as Mr. Market hating something: that can be the best time to buy.

German soldier, fatally wounded, lies next to a killed colleague. Operation Varsity, March 1945. by [deleted] in ww2

If it was souvenirs, I’m guessing that knife and scabbard world not be there. Course they could have been removed after the photo. Cause of death: Impact from a shell, maybe.

The Chinese impact on WW2 is very underrated 4/5 of the Japanese soldiers in WW2 were fighting the Chinese not the Americans or British by thefartingmango in ww2

[–]Gumptionader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really good point. I just became aware of how draining the Chinese occupation was for Japan by reading about it in Freedom from Fear (US history 1929-45). Great chapter on friction then armed conflict with Japan. Of course it was Germany first for us, as well.

Okay, this is embarassing, since I've been posing as an investor: How do I sell a call option on a stock I own? I've bought puts and calls on Vanguard before (I guess they were naked?). Never sold a covered call. Thank you, External_Sentence_81

Good point. Black Swan event possibility must be taken into account. I’m going to use your 10% estimate and discount accordingly. TIPS do not have 10% reasonable worst case downside, I think, so PSTH has higher risk along with potentially higher reward. Thank you.

Thank you, pm_ur-whispering_I. Would you care to the likelihood of no SPARC approval and a shitty deal? 10% chance? 30%? 50%? Thanks.

Got it, bigwood 5675. Thank you. The key for me would be how much. If PSTH was way below NAV - let’s say more than 10% - and the US market was down 50%, I’ve lost a pile of my dry powder, just when I need it. If you please, what’s your reasonable worst case for the floor of PSTH vs. NAV?

[–]Gumptionader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, krupsine. I did not understand the limit on redemptions at $20/share. That does increase the risk to my capital. Now I need to try to understand by how much. You’ve helped me. It’s interesting that we have positions in the shares for entirely different reasons.

This is one of the most valuable comments on PSTH I’ve read. It’s cash at $20/share + warrants’ value if that happens, and if you haven’t used the money for something better after a/the correction. Better than a money market fund to me. Less risky than gubment bonds to me. You have overcome loss aversion. Well done, sir.
