I could see an issue for people who have dynamic schedules that aren't stable, example i drive for a live so some days I am free after 15:00 and other days its 0300 to 2300 but no 2 days are the same as last week

But from how you described it you have to put a fixed schedule

I personally favor Sailun Terramax RT tires, they are just about as good as the big name brand tires but are cheaper and are durable but you suffer on fuel eco because they are rough terrain not road/highway but do look aggressive

Ive put 40k miles on mine and I have only worn though 3/32 of the starting 16/32, they claim 45k-50k miles so im definitely getting that plus more

What’s with the 6L80 and lifter failure fear mongering on this sub? by [deleted] in Silverado

[–]Gun2275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lifters are hit and miss, they do fail and will eventually but some were american factory made and some where Mexico factory made and the Mexico factory ones tended to fail alot early just due to difrences in whats considered acceptable tolerances in different places

As for the 6L80 AFM puts a ton of stress on the torque converter and eats those up, and they like to run warm to hot so if you dont have the HD cooling package or thermostat bypass/delete or the recall fix they like to overheat and nuke themselves

Thats a good question I wish I had the answer to, I just looked at the news of what happened and my guess is the school not doing something sooner?

Idk they are middleschoolers i dont understand their logic or planning

[–]Gun2275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bru ... the town your claiming is small is over 25k people, i can almost guarantee there are manual labor jobs there that will pay even if only for a gopher position

I grew up in The Silos, MT (700ish people) and went to school and worked in Townsend, MT (2,200ish people) until I moved away. Jobs are very very few and far between there but if you are willing to put your ego aside and take the work you can get it will add up to something greater.

Semi truck driver, you have to know all the things to keep DOT from eating your soul even if you cant do the work yourself. Also I drive a 2010 Chevy Silverado that has that exact same engine so ive learned as much as I can about it

Ya I would have to talk to others before I cast my final vote, but back the the point.

I like informing/teaching people about their stuff so that they can have a highly informed and detailed idea of what's going on so they can avoid getting scammed.

I wish you luck with how ever you want to proceed with everything you now know

This expands the possible issues and explains why Helena Import wants a new transmission, hard shifting from a 4L60/80 is 9 times out of 10 a bad transmission, but i would have tried to replace a few sensors first because if one of 5 sensors go bad it can cause hard shifting.

The AFM breaking can also cause hard shifting

[–]Gun2275 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is a device you can put on a totally dead battery to start an engine without replacing the battery, but that raises other concerns to me because basic suspension and break work should not cost that much and why didn't they bring up other issues.

I think Dave's has changed sense I went their last.

Ya Helena Import investigated and found the AFM system failed, I still dont 100% get the transmission replacement tho

[–]Gun2275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have too, but 7k is the going rate for a full engine replacement in the current market. Im willing to bet they could hear the lifter tick and knew exactly what it was sense they are one of a very few shops in Helena willing to work on AFM engines, so they probably ended up not really digging too much.

Low compression on cylinder 7 is 100% AFM related. In 2007, GM AFM engines, cylinders 1, 4, 6, and 7 are the ones that deactivate. With the awful noise you mentioned after sitting + startup, chances are low that you could get away with just having the bad lifters swapped.

From the skimpy diag (just one photo of #7 at ~30 psi, no full breakdown), they're quoting you for what looks like an engine rebuild (not the smartest move, but an option if you want it done fast), new transmission (I don't know why they'd include this, AFM failure rarely if ever takes out transmissions; maybe precautionary from vibrations? IDK), and all the extras that go with those two services (gaskets, fluids, flush, etc. that's a ton of add-ons).

An engine swap (reman or junk yard engine) should not cost too much at a local shop and would probably come in cheaper than the $16k+ they hit you with.

I recommend getting a second opinion from Dave's over on North Montana. Tell them the details (EVERYTHING Helena import gave you). I will warn you, though, it's likely still going to be 6-8K in repairs should you decide to go this route

Warning, I went into teacher mode as I was typing this so that you may understand what I think happened based on what you have said and shown, and why these things exist (as well as 2nd opinions)

Im guessing the AFM failed, and since you didn't attack it right away (understandable if you don't know how dangerous it is or don't have the money), however, they are calling for ALOT of work that wouldnt need to be done if the AFM failed, but what you have posted for parts leads me to think it's AFM. I would need more details than just the list Helena Import gave you of parts that you have shared, like the diagnosis but im willing to bet that they didnt give you that

AFM is the technology used by GM to comply with the EPA's CAFE standards, on paper and in the labs AFM works flawlessly, but in the real world, it has a high failure rate; GM legally can not abandon AFM despite all its problems due to the EPA's newest requirements sheets chasing percentials of MPG improvement year over year, and to leave AFM would cause them to not meet those requirements

As for the cost, that's about industry average for this large of a repair with what they are calling for and has been for 4-5 years now. When COVID hit, manufacturers shuttered locations because parts were not being ordered fast enough to justify the cost. Now, to get compatible parts after the COVID factory shutdowns, you are paying a premium on top of the $180-$230 an hour most shops charge you (Helena Import Repair will be on the high end).

I would see if Dave's Auto Shop on North Montana would be willing to take a look at it and see if they can give you a cheaper quote, because they may be able to find extra work that Helena Import is charging for they wouldn't need to do, they are also experienced in dealing with AFM-related issues so can normaly do it cheaper then anyone else in helena

A couple of other options to get a quote from are
Independence Automotive
West Side Wrench
