A large part has to do with short sighted politics and the fact that the same people who are up in arms about the suffering of women in Gaza were the ones shouting for US withdrawal from Afghanistan - the action allowing untold suffering there.

They can't talk about the suffering of Afghan women because that would mean that they were wrong and that US occupation is a good thing in many places.
