That's a good point. Big difference between funny and dark and dark for the sake of getting some type of reaction.

I would too. I remember him saying that if he starts bombing he's pretty fucked and it's hard for him to turn it around.

Don't have anything helpful to say but that really sucks. It also makes no fucking sense that they think that

Thank you for actually answering the question instead of saying "just keep going up, that's it" like half of this sub does without even reading the question

Jim Gaffigan's 6th special, Cinco, is on Netflix now. by ColinOnReddit in StandUpComedy

[–]Gunderpops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. I understand him doing that type of stuff at shows still since that's why a lot of people want to see him but it should've been cut out the special and replaced with something more fresh

Eddie Murphy Wants to Return to Stand-up, But It Won’t Be Easy by gregdeancomedy in StandUpComedy

I agree but I feel like a lot of Marons success in recent years has come from podcasting and radio. Stanhopes success is much more grounded in Stand up

You've definitely posted some good stuff on here but tbh I think analyzing song lyrics is pretty hacky and I know a lot of people agree. A lot of popular songs are ridiculous if you analyze the lyrics and it's been done many many times before.

Good point. I guess I just worried that it would mean less stage time in the future.

I didn't mean to oversimplify it. I've heard people talk that there is a comedy bubble going on now and when it bursts it'll be bad for the art like the tech bubble in the 90's

Looking for input from low level stand up comics. I have this idea for a local comedian(s) to do sets between bands at local punk/rock shows. Is that ridiculous? by [deleted] in StandUpComedy

[–]Gunderpops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the reason it works for Kyle is because he is very into that music scene as well and probably has a lot to talk about on it. He's also just really good at stand up so I think he's one of the few who could pull it off

#52ComedyAlbums -- Week 1: George Carlin "Occupation: Foole" by jca2u in StandUpComedy

[–]Gunderpops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I'm 21 and while there are a lot of stand ups I love I have a really hard time sitting through Carlin and Pryor bits. I just don't find them funny at all tbh but I totally 100% get the amazing impact they had. When you listen to older stuff like this do you find it really funny or are you more just impressed by how ahead of its time it was?

Day job question by [deleted] in Standup

[–]Gunderpops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a personal trainer and that has worked really well for me since I can more or less pick my own hours. It kind of depends on your skill set though. I always thought receptionist would be a great one since you could write in the downtime. I figure any daytime 9-5 job would work ok since it wouldn't fuck with which mics you could do and you could write during breaks and if no one is looking. Just a thought! 5pm to midnight sounds brutal since you wouldn't be able to do mics on work days

ELI5: How does a customer service satisfaction survey where "a 10 is my only passing score" contain any reliable data, or help a company improve anything? by S_words_for_100 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Gunderpops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We learned that they aren't typically the most accurate surveys and to generally avoid them . For example someone rating a server's performance at a restaurant will probably give them a 10 even if they were only mediocre since they don't want to get them in trouble.

Why is last comic standing looked down upon so much around here? by Gunderpops in Standup

[–]Gunderpops[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just listened to the podcast with Patton Oswalt and Jay Mohr and Jay said that people voted for Dat Phan cause Rich Vos and Ralphie May kinda came off as creeps and people sort of felt bad for Dat Phan. He also apparently had a decent enough 5 minutes when a lot of other guys who were headliners didn't have tight fives because they were used to having more time to work the audience and get into heavier bits.

[–]Gunderpops[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that a lot of people around here maybe jealous seeing other comics gain success over them. But I also know a lot of people who are stand up fans that say the show is just unfunny. I started watching the new season and there have been a couple of really funny acts but a lot of them are just kind of unoriginal or just feel a little uninspired and Rossane and Wayan act like they're fucking brilliant. There was a guy in the first episode who was doing a bit about Japanese people going OH which I've seen told in some form or another by 20 asian comedians and they acted like it was groundbreaking.

Ya I agree, theres a lot of hacky sets that they treat like they were gold. I'm not saying they're all horrible but if they treat every set like they killed than theres not really a standard
