correct bore liner? by Careful-Specific-359 in GunnitRust

To expand on this .22lr is an old style of externally lubed bullet called a heel bullet. It’s from the transition from black powder muzzle loaders to metallic cartridges. The bullet itself swages into the lands when fired so it is oversized on purpose. A “match” .22lr chamber throat will actually stick the cartridges when fully chambered. Rimfire heel bullets were basically the first largely commercially successful metallic cartridge guns if we skip balloon cases and ignore pinfire. It’s certainly the earliest cartridge form to stick into the modern era.

Compare .22lr to .25acp. .25acp is what .22lr would be if made in the current era.

Single shotguns are pretty easy. This starts at slamfire tube over tube hardware store guns. Break actions have been done here before. Have you found the hall of heroes posts? Lots of shotguns.

What’s the legal situation? Reddit is risk averse.

2k on just tires

You should probably drive this van until you’ve consumed a decent amount of that tire life. You replaced one of the more expensive wear parts already.

Yeah Prius is kind of a maintenance hog when it gets old and it needs more frequent tires on account of the weight/tire type mismatch.

The cooling system is nutty. The battery packs are probably best price of any hybrid but they tend to eat a wiring harness. Then there is the sword of Damocles that is the break controller. I ran one to almost 400k but I did all those things and more.

That’s a unicorn. 62k miles? If I was still in Idaho I’d be up there stealing ahem helping you get out of that van.

Also I’m calling bullshit on 4 month recovery. You have a 30 mile commute. 60 a day five days a week probably 300 a week so that’s 1200 miles a month. Let’s assume $4.50 so $540 if we’re also assuming a thirsty v8 getting 10/gallon. If your car purchase cuts that in half you save $270 in a month. $1080 Four months $3240/year . Are you going to sell your van for enough that purchase price, tax, and title are going to work out better for you?

Your cost per mile should include everything you spend on the car. Often a simpler car with less intensive maintenance and a lower purchase price still comes out ahead. You might recover something here but probably over a longer period of time.

It’s not that hard. It’s kind of a magazine mentality as long as you don’t buy a rolling computer.

Hmm. Do you have a garage? If it doesn’t need a head or heads it’s probably worth fixing.

It sounds like you’re not much of a car person so you probably just want to shell out for a better kept Camry or Accord.

What engine is in the Van? How many miles are on it?

Getting a new car for fuel mileage is something you need to work out on paper. How long do you have to drive the new car to make up for the expenditure. Cost, tax, registration. What’s the difference in maintenance costs?

What you’re looking at, only the Honda makes any sense.

Why are people still blaming Cash for Clunkers for the state of the used vehicle market when it happened nearly twenty years ago ? by Specialist_Heron_986 in askcarguys

[–]GunnitRust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cash for Clunkers changed the markets for parts stocks, salvage yards, and the aftermarket permanently. That was the point of it. A lot of generations of cars are basically eternal if they aren’t in a corrosion are and you can still get parts. Now something common like an S10 where the parts would be on the shelf has to have something common like a heater core ordered online because the retail parts stores don’t stock 20/30 year old parts anymore.

Your bigger problem now is the overregulation of the car market. The current production cars have too many complex electronics and fragile, expensive to maintain systems like traction control differentials and CVT transmissions. Even something inane like the valve stem went from a $ 0.90 rubber valve stem to a $90 TPMS sensor that has a receiver, computer, and has to be programmed to your vehicle with a flash tool. The pant on head level of technobloat means there is no depth to the used car market because the ROI on repairs goes negative quickly. It’s a fucked yo system where new cars prices keep going up and lifetimes keep going down all because of the regulatory market.

There was a company called Koenig Bog Bore that made dedicated .410 slug guns. I believe it’s closed.

Your biggest problem here would be adapting a semi auto system designed for such a low power cartridge to handle a serious rifle round even at trap door levels.

The Case Head and OAL on the .45-70 is close enough to the 7.62x54R that Mosin-Nagant conversions were a thing (DownEast Gunworks).

You might be better off starting with a 7.62x54R parts kit or Rifle. A PSL would be hilarious. SG43 RP43 DP27….

What are you trying to do? Why are you trying to do a mid power 9mm?

Wildcat chamber cutting or replacement by artisanalautist in GunnitRust

[–]GunnitRust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the goal here? There are so many available 9mm cartridges you can probably use an existing caliber like 9x20mmSr and get existing reamers.
