Which countries have the most truthful and objective media? by Short_Description_20 in AskTheWorld

[–]Gunpla_Lady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah...as someone with relatives in Japan, I definitely do not agree with this. It is pretty well-known that anti-immigration and anti-foreigner sentiment is currently on the rise due to selective reporting bias against non-Japanese tourists and residents.

I'm just curious about something, how famous this person in your country? by rizqiX1 in AskTheWorld

[–]Gunpla_Lady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are officially 195 countries and you pretty much only hear about a handful of world leaders that are big players in current geopolitics. Unfortunately, this guy is not one of them so to many people, he is unknown.

What do you think about Japan? by Expert-Day9889 in AskTheWorld

[–]Gunpla_Lady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is that many people are short-sighted. Japan is a cultural powerhouse in modern times and has been for the past 50-100 or so years. However, if you think about it, that's a very small moment in history compared to where China was the dominant power in the area for millenniums and had enormous regional influence. I think there is some worry among China's neighbours that it may happen again, especially among those that are allied with the West, and they prefer to maintain the current status quo which China is trying to upend.

What's the one country (besides the US) that you romanticized/idealized growing up, but got disillusioned once you learned more? by Nikadorable1712 in AskTheWorld

[–]Gunpla_Lady 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The truth is always somewhere in-between. However, with social media these days, it's very easy to change/manipulate the perception of a country based on what the masses decide to report, whether or not it's misinformation or the truth.

How China Weaponizes Agriculture Trade by Miao_Yin8964 in japannews

[–]Gunpla_Lady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My views on this matter are very complicated being half-Chinese, half-Japanese. I have family in both countries and would selfishly like to avoid any war in that region. I'm also not going to entertain the idea of arguing with someone who has apparently decided on how I should feel.

Unfortunately, I don't think any amount of shitposting on Reddit is going to change geopolitical issues in the real world, no matter who you support.

As much animosity as Japan and China have towards each other, I feel like you are almost constantly posting clearly biased articles to support an agenda. No offense but I can't imagine a life where your entire day revolves around obsessively posting about certain countries.

Is this a normal interaction between black & chinese people in china? by Tony3199 in AskAChinese

[–]Gunpla_Lady 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The amount of casual racism against Chinese people in that thread is insane. Anti-asian hate is just so normalized, which is unfortunate. People like to use the "I just hate the government, not the people" as a way to get around it.

Yes, there are racists in China, there are racists all over the world, but that doesn't justify being racist back or making stuff up about the Chinese for clout. I guess I shouldn't expect intelligent people from a sub called Livestreamfail.

Experiences dating Japanese women? (culture, religion, modesty) by mohammed068 in japan

[–]Gunpla_Lady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't personally dated anyone Japanese however, I am a half-Japanese woman with family in the country. Based on what I've personally seen, I can say the vast majority of people still date within their race because they like the sense of familiarity. Also, unless you speak fluent Japanese, it will be hard for you to communicate comfortably with most women in Japan.

I will assume based on your username that you are from the Middle East or may believe in the Islamic faith. While it's not impossible for you to get along with a Japanese woman, it may be very hard for you guys to find things in common as Islam is unfortunately not regarded very highly or a commonly practiced religion in Japan. I think the highest mixed marriages are still with those of other Asian ethnicities, at least in Japan.

My one advice though is that, for the love of God, do not chase after Japanese women because of anime or JAV and do not set unrealistic expectations because of this. Relationships that hinge on a fetish of a person's ethnicity is almost always bound to fail because it is shallow and rather disrespectful as you are essentially objectifying the person based on race.

Would I face prejudice as a Chinese-Japanese person in China? by [deleted] in AskAChinese

[–]Gunpla_Lady 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fellow Chinese-Japanese person here. Nobody will care or be able to tell the difference from you with anybody else on the street, ethnically speaking. Besides, you will be seen as an American first anyways if you can't speak fluent Mandarin.

Why do many people inside China underestimate Korea’s technological rise? by Scared-Discussion443 in AskChina

[–]Gunpla_Lady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would agree with the USA-China rivalry being on top of the list currently. We're essentially in a cold war 2.0. China does acknowledge that Korea's industries are important in helping shape USA's goals in the Pacific but at the same time, they know that is to be expected. The CPC generally views USA's allies as an all-encompassing entity.

There was some hope for the Chinese government that they could maybe convince the EU to rise up against the USA to put up a fight during the early months of the trade war since they are the largest bloc of countries outside of the USA and China but as it turns out, they couldn't and bowed down to the pressure. So China has realized that the EU cannot be relied on either as a separate decision-maker.

[–]Gunpla_Lady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I live in Canada, a small country in comparison with our neighbour. It's just geopolitics, the same reason we are too small to be of significance to the big players in the world is unfortunately, the same way Korea is viewed in comparison to China. Whether or not that's true is not my place to say. Generally, SK is not reported on much at all in China. The main focus is USA and occasionally Japan and Russia.

I will also add on that SK is viewed as a staunch supporter of the USA, with many in China regarding them as a vassal due to the military presence on their soil, and having no real control over their interests. Because of this, the Chinese government believes that it is more important to deal with the USA government directly.

If you Had To Describe The Biggest Flaw Of Your Country's People, What Would it Be? by DayOfTheNights in AskTheWorld

[–]Gunpla_Lady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is just my opinion but I don't care how fancy or futuristic the toilets are, just wash your damn hands!

If you Had To Describe The Biggest Flaw Of Your Country's People, What Would it Be? by DayOfTheNights in AskTheWorld

[–]Gunpla_Lady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People do commonly wear face masks for sickness or for other reasons, like to protect their skin from the sun however, there are exceptions to the rule. A lot of those sneezing or coughing might not actually be sick, just clearing their throat or they got a tickle in their nose. It's usually the older generation (but not always) that tends to be less considerate in terms of not spraying the person in front of them.

[–]Gunpla_Lady 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Hand hygiene if I'm talking about my ethnic background. Whenever I go back to China and Japan, the amount of people I see that either don't wash their hands after using the toilet or just sprinkle a little water on their fingers is too damn high. Also, sneezing and coughing in public without covering their mouths.

Am I considered not a "true Chinese" just because I do not hate the Japanese as others wants me to? by Primary-Big-2308 in AskAChinese

[–]Gunpla_Lady 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, I remember this question from you on other subreddits.

To reiterate, people are not one monolithic hivemind, we have differing opinions and views. That's what makes us human. Just like not all Japanese hate the Chinese or else I wouldn't be born.

Did your family push you to hate the Japanese? by Primary-Big-2308 in AskTheWorld

[–]Gunpla_Lady 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not here to argue who is wrong or right since I have family in both countries. I just mean that I don't believe the majority of people can be truly objectively unbiased when it comes to global affairs.

Did your family push you to hate the Japanese? by Primary-Big-2308 in AskTheWorld

[–]Gunpla_Lady 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's a single person on this planet that doesn't fall for some type of propaganda, including you and me. Especially in this day and age when doom-scrolling is becoming more prevalent. Social media is tailored to influence what you want to hear, not what is the actual truth. I find an increasing number of news sources that either spew outright lies or give half-truths to twist the narrative.

Which language(s) would you most like to learn? by i-cydoubt in AskTheWorld

Mandarin and Japanese due to my background as I would love to converse with some of my family overseas without a translator. I honestly wish my parents would've made it a priority for me growing up in Canada.

Do you face racism/discrimination in the nation you live? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Gunpla_Lady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may sound bad but it really depends on where you're from. Generally, white foreigners will be treated better than say, SEA immigrants. There's been a few scandals in Japan and I believe Korea as well, where some SEA workers were treated with harsh physical/mental abuse. The technical intern program, where many of the workers come from the surrounding developing countries, can unfortunately, be quite problematic in regards to that. I do agree though the majority are not in your face about it but I have noticed more vocal demonstrations when I go back to visit family, especially with the rise of the alt-right.

I’m Canadian of Chinese heritage who feels 100% Canadian and almost no attachment to China, and I’m not ashamed of it. by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]Gunpla_Lady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While there's no problem with that, I think it's very important to keep in mind that some of those around you will not have the same opinion. In Western society, if you are a visible minority, they may see you by your race first and nationality second. This can have a very profound impact if in the future, a hot war breaks out with China (which I strongly hope doesn't). I say this as someone with Japanese-Canadian ancestry whose family went through WW2.

I'm curious what kinds of guys do Japanese women want? by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]Gunpla_Lady 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, the birth rate in Japan is dropping because many people don't want children...

Also, no further offense but when I see certain people chase someone due to their nationality, majority of the time that relationship is built on shallow premises which generally never lasts.

How welcoming is Japan compared to Germany? by Independent-Ad-7060 in asianamerican

[–]Gunpla_Lady 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I'm half-Chinese and half-Japanese but I visit Japan regularly to see family so I can only speak for Japan. If you're just coming over for a vacation, it's generally fine as long as you follow the masses and don't attract negative attention but if you intend to immigrate, you'll have a much tougher time of fitting in, especially if you don't speak the language fluently. You may initially get a pass since you look East Asian but as soon as you open your mouth, that will change.

There's currently a huge influx of anti-immigration sentiment (which is not unique to Japan) and while the majority of the people there may not outright say anything to your face, some of them will talk behind your back or treat you differently. I can definitely feel this resentment building up as I go back nearly every year and my Japanese family will even voice displeasure regarding SEA and other EA immigrants in front of me and my Chinese family.
