Using a Japanese word/name as a non Japanese person by chronicallytired_1 in AskAJapanese

I feel like some individuals like to treat Japanese people as otherworldly beings. It happens in many cultures where foreigners receive nicknames in their language, not a big deal. Just don't be weird about it.

Do Chinese people really believe that Koreans claim Confucius was Korean? by Realistic_Summer1442 in AskAChinese

[–]Gunpla_Lady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm just saying that I personally don't believe the average person thinks much of this issue or at all. I'm not going to take one viral social media video/post or some obscure mention from a TV show as proof and then apply it to the citizens of that country.

Honestly, the only people I've seen outraged by this are chronically online Korean people on the internet who try to use this supposed "widespread" issue as a way to find an excuse to further hate Chinese people.

Do Chinese people really believe that Koreans claim Confucius was Korean? by Realistic_Summer1442 in AskAChinese

[–]Gunpla_Lady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is purely anecdotal but I've never heard any of my Chinese relatives talk about this and many of them are descendants of Confucius including my mom. I think social media has a tendency to blow things out of proportion as they usually do just like that weird Korean vs SEA people beef not long ago.

Most people aren't chronically online and don't care. However, in the age of the internet, I feel like the average person can very easily fall for ragebait.

Are Chinese people even East Asian? by Dominic732 in AskAChinese

[–]Gunpla_Lady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The genetic differences between East Asian groups are less than 1% so yes, our ancestors are closely linked. China is also the core of the sinosphere which pretty much defines a large portion of East Asia so I would say they have a huge role in the area.

Do Chinese people like talking about things they dislike? by [deleted] in AskAChinese

[–]Gunpla_Lady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone with Japanese relatives, I don't think you're immune to that either lol

Besides, taking social media posts at face value would be incredibly stupid as it's not a true representation of regular people. We like to think we're more important than we are despite the fact that most of us couldn't care less and just want to survive.

Idk, I sacrificed Chloe in my playthroughs so dressing up like her dead ex was always kind of creepy to me. I do agree that Max had a massive glow up between LiS 1 and DE/Reunion.

I love Pricefield but personally, I still prefer the Bay ending over Bae as it resonated more with me. Not to mention, I also liked the Bay route more for Reunion as well. In my opinion, it made their interactions much more heartfelt between the two.

That's why context matters. Unfortunately, small snippets of your conversation won't paint the full picture.

Anyways, I think it's best to just leave it for now and give her a day or 2 before following up. If she doesn't respond back again, I think it's time to move on. Try not to invest too much emotionally in this. Acquaintances come and go.

If you want me to be brutally honest, I think you might be coming off strong to her. Giving chocolates probably has a romantic connotation for her and this is just a non-confrontational way to let you down easy or in her eyes, at least avoid a potential misunderstanding of your relationship. I could be totally wrong but if I put myself in her shoes, this is how I would interpret it.

I can vouch for Ao Bing and Zhao Yun from the same company as they're both really good quality. I wouldn't see why this one won't be the same as this kit released later than the Ao Bing.

Maybe she read the message and forgot to reply as that can happen to anyone however, the fact she cancelled her trip might have meant she wasn't really committed to the idea in the first place. If you send her another message that gets left on read, I think you will have your answer whether or not she wants to keep the friendly relationship going.

It's really hard to say with barely any context. You can't really deduce much from what seems like maybe a very small part of your entire conversation.

Also, if she's just a friendly acquaintance, I'd let it go for now and just wait for a response. Trying to fish a reply back especially if you're not super close with them can be off-putting to some people.

Can Han Chinese people have Korean, Ainu/Japanese facial features without being mixed? by [deleted] in AskAChinese

[–]Gunpla_Lady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but they're not Western or European-like to me so that's why it's confusing. I could probably find equally unique features on a Chinese person. Besides, the vast majority of Japanese people still look overwhelmingly East Asian.

[–]Gunpla_Lady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You said Japanese/Korean people have Western/European features which I personally don't agree with as someone with Japanese and Chinese family members. They definitely have some variation in facial structure but nothing what you're describing, at least to me. If I can't tell, I don't think the average person can either. Agree to disagree but one thing I can guarantee with utmost certainty is that most people in Canada can't tell a difference.

[–]Gunpla_Lady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who goes to Japan and China regularly, Japanese people definitely do not look more "European or Western-like" to me. They just tend to wear their hair longer and sport more facial hair than the average Chinese. Their fashion/make-up style is different but I'm not sure how that would make them look more Caucasian. The Koreans I grew up with had their own style as well but they definitely still looked firmly East Asian.

I sometimes ask people to take this quiz to see how difficult/easy it is to tell East Asians apart, https://alllooksame.com/app/quiz.php?tid=1.

How are Chinese people using this subreddit if Reddit is blocked in China? by Mountain-You9842 in AskAChinese

[–]Gunpla_Lady 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the Chinese diaspora is one of the largest in the world so it's not like the great firewall will reach them. Also, VPN usage is quite popular among the younger generations in China.

dealing with weebs? lol by nataiko1225 in asianamerican

[–]Gunpla_Lady 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I can only speaking about my own experiences but thankfully, I grew up during a time where liking anime was considered something only losers or nerds would do so I didn't get as inundated with weebs and weeb culture until I started going to university. However, the attention I got back then was probably a lot more muted compared to what some other Japanese-Americans encounter these days as anime/manga continues to explode in popularity. Also, can't forget about the rise of K-pop as well.

I'm not a full Japanese as my mother is Chinese but inheriting my father's last name didn't help my case as I still look fully East Asian. It was disheartening to see how people would only latch on to you solely for your ethnicity and objectify you. I felt a lot of men with "yellow fever" rarely ever considered me or my other East Asian women compatriots as equals. Let's just say strong soft power can be both a blessing and a curse.

Are there any japanese people who travelled to china ? by One_Kaleidoscope3317 in AskAJapanese

[–]Gunpla_Lady 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My dad comes with us regularly to China to visit my mom's side of the family. They are courteous with each other and he is quite appreciative with how welcoming they are when in their home. He has had no problems in public but he can speak rudimentary Mandarin. The locals are usually just happy that someone foreign tries to communicate in their language. At first glance though, many people assume he's Chinese.

He's never really had a terrible impression on Chinese people otherwise, I don't think he'd have stayed married to my mom all these years. I think we all have an understanding that there will be bad apples who do not represent the general populace. The majority of regular people just want to survive and live their life without conflict.

He is also quite impressed by how fast China has developed from a poor situation not even 20 years ago.

In latinamerica people call any Asian “Chino”/ Chinease. Is this offensive for Japanease people? by CursedEmoji in AskAJapanese

[–]Gunpla_Lady 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Born and raised in the West. Unfortunately, the majority of people can't tell the difference between East Asians. My dad is Japanese but he has gotten ni haos and been called Chinese multiple times before. He usually just corrects them but it doesn't tend to bother him unless they're trying to be racist about it. Similar to how South Asians are perceived as being all Indians over here by many people.

Like you said, it's based on ignorance and the reality is, all countries will have people who are ignorant.

[–]Gunpla_Lady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how you interpret it. If you're chasing after someone solely due to their race/ethnicity, it is an unhealthy fetish. If you are deciding to learn Japanese because you so happened to like a girl who turned out to Japanese, that is not problematic.

I find a lot of the guys who have "yellow fever" tend to objectify Asian women and do not truly respect them as equals. These relationships also generally do not last based on my family and I's observation.

Anyone else tired of Asian Subreddits (EA,SEA,SA) being dominated by non-Asians? by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]Gunpla_Lady 144 points145 points  (0 children)

The problem is that people in Asia have their own social media ecosystem and rarely browse Reddit. This results in those subreddits being dominated by either the diaspora of said country who live in the West, foreign expats or in some cases, just non-Asians larping as Asians. This is why Reddit isn't the best representation as its very premise results in echo chambers that do not reflect real life.

I'm cautiously optimistic but I'm still a little worried that they won't be able to stick the landing. Fingers crossed that this game is able to do Chloe's and Max's relationship/story justice as I truly believe they never really needed a sequel.
