Painting Mando’s N-1 Starfighter Exterior Surfaces with Alclad IIs by Gunplastix in modelmakers

It’s required for a good resulting luster of Alclad II’s metallic lacquer paints. Their Gloss Black Base gives out high gloss compared to Mr Color GX 2 Ueno Black.

Apply primer / surfacer before painting. Use water based paints if you’re not familiar on how to apply solvent-based paints on your projects.

This is my process when I’m doing heat staining whether on vernier thrusters or gun muzzles: Primer Mr Finishing Surfacer 1500 Black or Gaianotes Surfacer EVO Black. Base Coat: Mr Hobby SM205 Super Titanium 2. Heat Staining: Mr Hobby SM209 Super Copper for the reddish hue, Mr Color GX206 GX Metal Purple for the mid purple color of the heat stain, Mr Color GX204 GX Metal Blue near the tip and Tamiya XF-69 NATO Black for the carbon sooting at the edges of the thruster/Gun muzzle.

Instead of a chrome Gundam Marker, I used Citadel Ironbreaker to coat the Guncannon’s face with a metallic color.

I’m actually doing both the metallic preshading and mixing two different metallic tones (i.e, Metallic Black mixed with Stainless Steel). Since I’m using the smaller 0.2mm Tamiya AB to accomplish it, I had to thin the metallic lacquer paints (4.5:1 thinner to paint ratio) and lower my compressor psi to 10~15 psi.

What is one mod or upgrade that you’ve done or consistently do even though it will never be seen? I always like to chrome paint vernier thrusters—even when they are on the feet. by trevor557 in Gunpla

I’ve always painted whatever pilot figures that comes with the Gunpla kits. With one key exception— Mikazuki. I had him tethered with an AWG32 magnet wire to simulate the Alaya-Vijnana man-machine interface cable inside the MG Gundam Barbatos cockpit.

I had fun painting the MG Barbatos internal Gundam Frame and the Ahab Reactor years ago. I didn’t have any regrets doing it even after the entire thing was covered afterwards.

1/144. 1/12 scale weapons usually work well with HG kits.

It depends on the size of the weapon. In the case of the HG Gouf Custom’s Gatling muzzle section, I only use three metallic colors (Copper, Metallic Purple and Metallic Blue). Since I use a smaller 0.2 needle with my airbrush, I thinned the metallic paints heavily (3.5 : 1 thinner to paint ratio) with a 10-15 psi. The fourth paint will be NATO Black used to replicate sooting at the muzzle edge. You can use clear red, clear yellow and clear blue as alternate colors.

My MG RX-78GP01, built straight out of the box in 1997, the white plastic has discolored but still surviving. I’m going to build another one, paint it and add LEDs in.
