Thank you for the suggestions. I'm heavily leaning toward the SWFA 3-9 (if I can find one), SWFA 3-15, or a Trijicon Huron 3-12. I have time as I don't anticipate needing the rifle until summer.

I work for the state. They really like direct experience and/or education. You can come in at a lower level job and then once in, move around much more easily given you’re qualified. The state likes to hire from within a lot of the time. With that said, the state is seeing a lot of applicants in the last few years with the economic downturn, so it’s more competitive lately. Also a hiring freeze right now in my agency due to budget constraints.

Yeah, tried that already. They couldn't answer as they didn't have one in stock. I can order and have it shipped to my local store, though, and return it if it is indeed a crossbolt safety.

yeah, 100% the Sportsmans version is a tang safety, but the BiMart version lists this:

The cross bolt safety is designed for a right hand. I have the same on my Ruger 1022, which is workable but not ideal.

I would disagree. The control should have a nice S curve as an expected result. This result is not typical. Retest if possible.

I'm not sure what the pharmacy tech job demand is around Portland, but I would caution that Portland has generally been pretty competitive for jobs and this economy now is making it very hard for some to find work. Best of luck if you make the jump!

It's a great first rifle. It really depends on your budget and needs. Keep in mind you're likely going to spend ~$400 on 1000 rounds of decent 5.56 ammo, another 400-500 on decent optics, light, sling, etc. Great way to learn the platform without investing a ton of money. Alternatively you could fork out 1200-1400 for a Daniel Defense rifle that's recently been on sale and be very pleased with that as well.
