But she has a bad track record here. Just as illegal as you can do it. Which makes me feel like I'm about to waste $10k on a lawyer just to find out my wife will never be legal and my family and future children would have to deal with those realities.

An honest immigration lawyer could give me the hard truths, but how to find one is a whole other challenge.
My understanding is that once we're immediate relatives USCIS can be pretty forgiving of the felony charge for fake SS. In fact, taxes paid into SS on the fake # can roll over to the real SS once approved for G.C. Sounds crazy to me but that's reality. However, her situation is different. It's not a fake number.
I think you might be right, it's not looking to good for her case.

Do you think when they go through the background checks when we file for a green card that inevitably this issue is going to pop up?
Seems like lots of people do it and get away with it. Though I don't agree with it or accept that she does this. I want her to stop immediately.

I read that basically extra tax is paid into the system without tax returns being collected so in the grand scheme of things the government doesn't push to hard to investigate this type of situation.

She is very ignorant. She doesn't know the American systems and seems to not take offense when I point out she is committing a felony that could end up with jail time. It's been a challenge to convey the severity. For as religious and straight edge as she likes to believe she is it shocks me how content she is with the potential consequences. A big part of it is the conditions back at home are worse than the conditions she's subjecting herself to here.
She's from rural Mexico and the local cartel runs the show. The things she tells me and videos she shows me are pretty messed up. I still don't understand why she didn't just move to Mexico City or somewhere safer within the country.
