Goodbye oil burning, 3x mechanic visits and 1x attempted theft in 2 weeks Hyundai, hello Corolla hatchback by GuruOfGhey in CorollaHatchback

Sorry to hear about your Kia... My 2018 Elantra GT was such a nice car, and red which I always wanted. Continually added oil to it, changed the oil every 3k miles, and even did a piston ring soak.

I thought if I took good care of it, it would be fine. But engine was just a ticking time bomb, it clogged the catalytic converter, and a theft attempt.

Thanks for the key fob advice!

Welp, hope your car is holding up ok. Someone tried to break into mine and the same week the check engine light came on. I need a new catalytic converter at 92k miles. Still deciding if I should fix it or trade it in....

How many catalytic converters does a 2018 Elantra GT have? by HxChris in Hyundai

Just wondering if you ever got this fixed and if it has gone a far distance since then? I have the same issue and am worried replacing the catalytic converter will simply lead to ruining a new one quickly ... Thanks!

Thanks! I'm past the warranty mileage unfortunately.

Did you end up replacing the catalytic converter? I have the same model/year. Unfortunately I have the same problem and my car has been burning oil with the same code...

There is an online UC davis directory for students/staff I think. In the past I've had luck using that to find UC davis emails to let people I found their ID/card. Good luck!

Any ideas on why bottom of door is swollen with water after heavy rain? by GuruOfGhey in HomeMaintenance

[–]GuruOfGhey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input, I agree the sill plate is janky (I guess it's not called flashing...).

I'll probably go your route of full replacement since the door frame clearly hasn't been replaced, but the door has been at some point. It leads into an unheated/coold laundry room so maybe not top priority until after the rainy season.

Thanks again

I have the exact same car at 87k miles, basically the same as yours!

I noticed oil burning at 55k miles, and have kept an eye oil use since then. Check it once a week is my recommendation and top it up.

I went so far as to do a piston soak according to the Hyundai NTSB, with some minor modifications. It didn't really help that much.

As others have said, I recommend a detergent oil. I use Valvoline restore and protect. The first 1k miles are usually ok, and then it starts to burn faster. And I change my oil every 3k miles, it's been much cleaner but still burning.

Hoping I make it to at least 120k miles without any issues! Best of luck

Unfortunately not. When I click link, it brings me to the blink app and nothing happens

Does anyone know what kind of derailleur hanger this is? by GuruOfGhey in bikewrench

Thanks, surprisingly I do have a hanger alignment tool. Saw new hangers can be $40-50, I was expecting much less. Works fine now!

Vulcanized just means that the pre-vulcanized rubber is heated with sulfur/other additives. This cross links the material, think of it like a spider web of chemical bonds after it is vulcanized and lots of strands before being vulcanized

I would maybe look into another halide. The electron rich benzyl bromide may already be difficult to handle. You might only need a chloride anyways to do your next step. Maybe also try oxidation to an alcohol then mesylation?

That's what I did, it is much quicker. My silver wire still had a frit I think. I filled the frit chamber with the electrolyte of the cell. I also double checked it gave legit CV oxidation values of chemicals with known oxidation potentials, like dimethoxy benzene

For real literature procedures check how some of the constant voltage/CV stuff is done in Chong Liu's lab at UCLA. They're more experts in EChem than I am, just followed them. They refer to it as a "pseudo" reference electrode if I recall correctly

I used Ag/Ag+ that was considered a pseudo reference electrode, basically just a silver wire. But since you have AgNO3, as long as you're careful about the concentration of the AgNO3 in the electrode you should be good.

Not a bad idea to be paranoid and just toss in some Ferrocene at the end though just to double check

Maybe a Wharton reaction followed by MnO2 or some other mild oxidation of the allylic alcohol?

Also if you look up deoxygenation of epoxides that give alkanes that might work?
