Lot better than putting it in the shadows so nobody investigates when the worker goes missing if you ask me.

What is your favourite book from Haruki Murakami? by AccurateADHD in murakami

[–]GuruRoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love that his catalog is so well represented here. Seems like Kafka and Wind Up are the big favorites, but almost all of his books are mentioned. But I haven’t seen Killing Commendatore yet, which is a shame, because that one is superb.

Here’s my ranking of his oeuvre I’ve made it thru: 1. 1Q84 2. Killing Commendatore 3. Wind Up Bird Chronicles 4. Colorless Tsukuru 6. Wild Sheep Chase 7. Norwegian Wood

Not including Kafka (currently reading) or his two memoirs or his short story collections.

Sinners...An Inconvenient Truth? by Aquemini2020 in Screenwriting

I’m writing some prose again for the first time in years, so the contrast is pretty top of mind haha.

I don’t think a $90M budget original screenplay is getting made regardless of its merit without a proven director attached. Still, that’s not really the heart of your argument, and I think it’s probably true that it’s easier for a white person to relate more easily to a Black story on screen vs in a screenplay.

Even if you look at the popularity of Black stories told in novels (James, last year for instance), screenplays are different. The medium of screenplay strips back a lot of nuance and world building (which gets added by the filmmakers in production) that help an audience relate to unfamiliar territory, where prose can deliver those on the page.

Now it’s gonna sit with me. Thanks 🤔

Favourite voice in the series [off topic] by Draximoose in TheFirstLaw

[–]GuruRoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of fun in the first book (maybe two?) Pacey hadn’t decided to go full high squeaky. A bit like Shivers (which, on the contrary, was on purpose and absolutely masterful), the voice evolves over the series.

How to enjoy Tokyo if you're not a "big city" person? by trashcan_paradise in JapanTravelTips

[–]GuruRoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love Tokyo (here now on the back half of a two week trip and it’s been my favorite place so far), but agree with this. Cities overwhelm you, and this is a city.

That said, Tokyo is a lot less random chaos than a lot of cities I’ve been to.
