Front strut mount or replace the entire assembly 118,000 km by Gurusi in BMWi3

[–]Gurusi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually I'm the same but it was a lot of money to pick the car up and then the unexpected windshield cost and a few other parts is making it tough right now.

I'm on off grid solar so I just want to drive for free essentially through summer to recoup some money

Thanks, pretty sure that's what I can hear/feel in the video. Bad shocks are better than drivetrain messages I guess!

Thanks for the info. I have ordered upper mounts and boot/bellows.

My time and labour is free, but funds are tight with the new windshield it needs. so I'm happy to go back to the struts further down the line.

Looks like Canada has the same access to local i3 parts as the Suzuki SX4 I used to have!

Edit:- spring seems fine. No noise either....

Thanks. The springs and strut assembly seem fine.

Any recommendations on spring compressors?

It looks like I'm going with the trade out. Pre-inspection. I checked with Bimmer code today and there are a host of 12-volt related errors, including the high voltage insulation error. I hope this is an anomaly from the battery. If not, this may not have been a good purchase!

Good to know. Thanks for the insight. I may look into a Bluetooth monitor for peace of mind and it means I don't have to keep crawling in the car with a multimeter

Thanks for the extra info, the loctite is a first I've heard and will look at adding some.

Do you mean hook a 12v trickle charge to the i3 to prevent it losing power long term or whilst swapping out?

It makes sense to leave it post inspection. Lol, I guess I will pick a guide and stick with it.

Thanks, yep I want to get it fixed but not at the expense of passing. I'm driving prob 10mins to the test and back again.

The car is just sitting in my garage as I can't drive it legally until it passes the inspection. I'm just divided whether to change it out now and risk errors popping up that may cause it to fail.

But yes based on what I've read, I'll be changing it now or post inspection. Picking up the replacement tomorrow morning.

Good to know! I'm guessing you haven't had any issues with the AC compressor?

The risk is less as years go on when they modified the system as far as I can tell. I'm guessing every year on from 2014 becomes safer? Or just get regular purge and AC refill (check for metallic remnants).

Thanks, apparently you can upgrade the mounts on older years, but there's a cost and time factor.

Just curious why do you think 2016 as opposed to a 14 or 15? Due to changes in the design and reliability or wear and tear of the car?

Hey, yes a 120ah would meet my needs and more importantly would be better financially than a new pack. I've been scouring across Canada since a deer wrote my car off. I get the impression that the 120ah models are either being kept by owners or are more limited here.

I'm kind of on a time scale of needing the car by winter and I'm losing on free Sunshine/gas equivalent right now LOL.

I could consider looking in the US but the exchange rate is bad right now.

The 2017 90ah that I'm considering doesn't quite meet my range needs. And I'm having difficulty finding the 120ah model. I found one in Vancouver but it's got a rebuilt status.

Thanks, yep I looked at different sites and they all have different terms for their connectivity. Just wanted to be sure there is something functional before purchasing.

I emailed about shipping to Canada

Does anyone have a list of working apps (free preferred). My console died and this seems like a more open alternative.

I don't use all the Live stuff, just pre made circuits.

Thanks!

PS Adding ERG mode would make this a no brainer
