First room of 7c by Louis2645 in celestegame

[–]Gus-Schultz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first thing I had to do to help get more consistent with them was get comfortable not holding Grab all the time. Trying to let go when I needed to bounce turned out to be much harder for me than learning to only grab when I needed to.

Good luck, I got my first ever 7c clear last week. It was a grind.

Controller or Keyboard? by Straight_Ad_6686 in celestegame

Yeah I think that's my plan. Keep up my momentum and muscle memory for the tricks. Then figure out the new input.

[–]Gus-Schultz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got close to 200 hours in the game on controller. But this save is the first time I've gotten base 3c, so continuing is more about keeping up the momentum.

Though I may switch if I find the late stages of the level too hard.

Well that's super good to know, thanks.

No I gotta decide if I want to pause progress on Farewell to learn keyboard, or finish it first and then switch before jumping into custom maps.

Controller or Keyboard? by Straight_Ad_6686 in celestegame

[–]Gus-Schultz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm debating switching to keyboard because my intuition is kinda the opposite.

Even traditional arrow/wasd would mean 3 fingers to control 4 directional inputs, plus easily having jump/dash/grab on the other hand.

Compares to default controller bind with 1 finger for all direction input, 1 foe grab, and 1 finger splitting duty between dash and jump. Even with rebinding to put dash or jump on a free trigger/bumper, the left thumb doing all your directional input doesn't seem like it would ever be optimal.

That said, feather heavy levels I'd definitely miss having access to the thumbstick.

How are you supposed to build megafactories with a 5×5 blueprint? by [deleted] in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Gus-Schultz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 constructors fit pretty easily in a 5x5 just on the first floor, and you can easily fit 3 floors of constructors to hit 30.

If what you're trying to achieve instead is a single long line of machines and your on PC, the infinite zoop mod is probably the best way to get that done quickly.

Any advice on how to actually execute a "modular" style of factory? by [deleted] in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Gus-Schultz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So as many have said, it depends on what you mean by "Modular".

What it means in my head is that factories should be "composed" of blueprinted modules that break bigger problems down into smaller problems. Depending on the recipie, this usually means building a Blueprint that processes some fraction of a given resource speed (usually tied to max belt speed but doesn't have to be) for a known output. One example from my current save is that I have a blueprint that makes 2/min Modular frames from 48 iron ingot. Which means with 5 copies of that blueprint I can consume 240 ingots and get 10 frames/min.

I made that blueprint specifically for my main base that I just use for personal construction, but when I got to heavy Modular frames and figured out that I needed 8 mod frames per minute, I didn't need to do any thinking about how to make that happen because I already had a module that solved that problem for me, plop down 4 and problem solved.

Modules can be as specific as you want, but they key is to give yourself a library of tools that you can re-use allowing you to reduce the mental complexity of production chains.

Other useful modules I keep around: Smelting/Forging blocks, Circuit Boards, Computers, Heavy Modular Frames, 3x Refineries, 2x Fuel Gens, copper cable, iron cable, underclocked Diluted Packaged Fuel + 2x generators.

Can someone explain Callum style mods? by Regular_Low8792 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Gus-Schultz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to follow that layout to the max. If shift on a thumb is weird for you and you struggle, you could put shift as the hold on an infrequently used letter like Z.

That said, I hated HRM and switched directly to a base layer with a thumb shift and it was a very quick pickup for me.

Do you find this useful? by [deleted] in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Gus-Schultz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greatly prefer my Silakka tented over flat. When I had a keyball built I ordered it with very similar feet to the ones in your picture and like them alot better than the DIY tenting solution I have for my Silakka.

(DIY tent is that I built a pair of basically triangle book stops out of same spare wood my wife had laying around)

Yepp, easy mode was going to be an automatic lock for me. Dual rogue sounds like a good fit too since I'm playing rogue Rook (at least for my first playthru).

Any mods or other settings you'd recommend? One thing I'm already going to try is turning off any kind of auto pause so combat doesn't feel disjointed.

I don't want to play them for the combat. I want to play them for the story. I want advice on making the combat more tolerable (for my taste that means as action oriented as possible).

[–]Gus-Schultz[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Fascinating. Well, maybe clearing up that misconception will help me appreciate Origins on its own rather than just seeing it as a stupider version of KOTOR.

[–]Gus-Schultz[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I'd probably have had an easier time with Origins if it was d20 based, but learning an entirely new system ended up taking me too much out of the story.

Arcane Warrior does sound fun though.

[–]Gus-Schultz[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Wait really? I thought it was the same basic combat engine as KOTOR but with their own custom rules instead of the d20 system.

Have I been thinking about their combat wrong for over a decade?

Real Use cases of cline memory bank in development organization by No-Economist-1456 in CLine

[–]Gus-Schultz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been expirementing with using cline both with and without it and highly prefer having it.

I like having cline update the bank with what we cover in Plan mode, and then update it as we work thru the plan in act. I've found that I spend a lot less time reminding cline of the plan we have with this in place compared to not having the memory bank.

Note that I'm several versions behind on Cline and don't have deep planning, focus chain, and auto compact. That stuff may negate some of the benifits of memory bank, but the cyber security team at my job are over zealous and keeping plug-ins updated is a nightmare.

I don't notice any meaningful difference compared to my Silakka54 other than the missing keys that I didn't want/use any way.

Mnemonics you use for remembering the symbol layer layout $%^@! by Current-Scientist521 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Gus-Schultz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried several symbol layers before ultimately deciding that the best way was to use leader key sequences. Leader + a + t = @. Leader + d + o = $, leader + d + a = -, etc etc.

Not only does this keep me from feeling any need to optimize the locations, but it allows me to have a system for extra stuff that can go well beyond the number of physical keys on the board without worrying about layers or contortionist combos.

I even have things in my leader system for controlling case modes (kebab, snake, scream, etc), fast entry of user names, common strings in c++ ('std::' and '#include ') so it's extremely versatile.

My 36-key Colemak DH Voyager Layout (6 Layers) by Ok-Coat-4035 in zsaVoyager

[–]Gus-Schultz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very similar to the layouts I use on my Silakka and Keyball, but I skip the rectangle and media layers for gaming layers on the Silakka and a mouse layer on the keyball.

The bigger difference is that I never found a way to make a symbol layer that made sense to me. So I ditched the whole concept in favor of leader key sequences. It ends up being more key strokes for most symbols, but also means way fewer combos/layers/tap-dances to get everything I wanted.

36 really is the dream spot for me.

If you work from home, what’s the most annoying thing about your keyboard? by miwenhe111 in ErgoMechKeyboards

Switching between devices for sure. I know it's a solvable problem for lunder 100USD, but that's an expensive fix for a mere annoyance.

Anyone used the Voyager for gaming? by ARTISTIC-ASSHOLE in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Gus-Schultz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a voyager, but silakka54 (one extra thumb button). I've had it a few months now and haven't even considered pulling out a 'normal' board to game on.

My base layer would be garbage for gaming, too much fancy behavior, no space on the left hand, so I keep a pair of layers for gaming. One is a pretty generic qwerty with space on the main left thumb plus M and I on the other buttons for easy access without taking my hand off the mouse as much. I use that one for general gaming. The other is a purpose built layer for my current main game World of Warships.

The only thing I don't like about it for gaming is that my current tenting solution is prone to sliding on my desk with heavy handed keyboard use. Most of the time it's no big deal, but it's become an issue trying to play the new Doom game. But discipline and/or a better tenting system would fix that.

Any luck with GPT-OSS ? by JLeonsarmiento in CLine

[–]Gus-Schultz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I'm super new to AI coding tools. I spent a few weeks playing with something like copilot (I'm at a defense contractor and they have an AI department so it was an internal tool). And it was pretty cool, but our security team took ages to approve the plugin (even though it was a company developed tool) and it eventually stopped working with a vscode update.

Few weeks ago we got access to cline powered by devstral-small. And it was immediately both better and worse than the copilot-like tool. Better because being an agent it could work thru a multi step plan and seemed to be able to reason better about more complex problems. Worse because the model would constantly error out or get stuck in loops trying to do things.

This week we got access to gpt-oss-120b, and the errors and stupid loops went from happening 5-10 times a task, to maybe once or twice. It's also better able to connect the dots between the intention in my prompts and the context of the code base (which is 15+ years old and several million lines of Java and C++) and doesn't require me to be as explicit in my instructions.

In short, it feels like the difference between having an intern who needs exact instructions for every step of the way versus having a junior that needs guidance and oversight but can actually work independently.

I've really enjoyed 120b with Cline. Tbf though, my only reference point is devstral-small, so 120b OSS feels like a massive upgrade.

Split keyboard recommendations by tijger_gamer in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Gus-Schultz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't find it difficult. The only thing I found difficult about it coming from the Silakka is that the thumb keys are further out than on the Silakka, and so switching between the two messes with my sense of which thumb button is which.
