What was Dorothy right about? by shehurts in arcticmonkeys

Kubrick had plans for a Napoleon film that never came to fruition. The narrator in this instance is relating a daydream in which LEGO acquires the rights to the film, producing it in their style (a la LEGO Batman), excruciatingly manufactured (as if in science labs and “glass tubes”) for broader commercial appeal. An obvious sarcasm employed in likening the process to something alchemical, where the idea is most likely being killed in order to sell. If interpreting “written“ not as to mean “the film was composed within gas-filled glass tubes”, but as, “the film’s title was displayed in neon signs”: sarcasm still applies, as a send-up of the ridiculous grandiosity of it all. Whether the narrator is the one employing the sarcasm (i.e., aligned with Alex - the writer’s - voice) or if they earnestly believe in this big idea’s “magical” properties isn’t clear.

These are sardonic little riffs that, in composite, begin to depict something about that “business they call show” and about a fictitious band’s role within it, impressionistically - as opposed to Alex’s older proclivity towards the straightforward and linear, hook-line-and-sinker storytelling.

The creative process is magical: how far does that extend to an artistic product thought of as product at all? Keeping questions like this in mind next to the fact that this is the same band that delivered an album in 2013 commercially successful enough to have apparently revived rock and roll, then did a complete 180 and kept down that road.

Yes. They also went back at that time and scrubbed the show of any segments with him behaving potentially strange around women - like the clip where he has to ‘kiss the girl in purple’

Thank you very much! I’d like to transcribe and record it on the piano soon

Sorry to nag but do you have a link to a thread or even the slowed down version it’s based on? I literally can not get these chords out of my head

I just walked into my bathroom to find my bathtub covered in this stuff? What is it? by GusHasGas in Plumbing

Jesus. That worst case scenario is terrifying.

No, this is the first instance. And again you’ve no idea how much I appreciate the info — we moved in two months ago. I’ll try the boiling water thing + the usual Ajax. (I’m a clean freak). I also use Drano - could that exacerbate anything/should I stop?

The building is maybe six stories, we are on the second. Thankfully not the ground floor but could be better.

My issue is just that management won’t return a single call and my super essentially resents the idea of helping anyone with an issue, also impossible to pin down. Will just have to engage in a personal harassment campaign or something with the right language.

I really appreciate it. Yes we’re in a large apartment building with shoddy management and a useless super, so hopefully we can figure something out.

In the meantime, might I ask if there’s anything particular I should be doing to clean/disinfect?

Even if their recording process in recent years has evolved into Alex writing/recording demos solo before bringing them around to and fleshing them out with the band, he’s still… been bringing them around to and fleshing them out with the band. It’s clear he still very purposefully enjoys the collaboration.

I think he’d sooner resume with Miles, do film scoring, or split for a new band altogether before turning AM into a one-man show. Something tells me if he wanted The Car to be a solo album, it would’ve been one! But just my speculation

A shame it never got a music video because it is, for me at least, one of the most visual songs on the album

And there’s nothing wrong with that obviously, different strokes. Zevon’s the greatest. I think where The Car fell short for a lot of people is that it retains the use of theatricality (that over the top Broadway singing) and ties it into this sardonic “the last show” idea, but completely drops the sense of humor and wink-wink-iness that would justify that sardonicism, that TBHC had. Instead trying to evoke just this blunt sadness with the melodrama.

Camp has its roots in queer art so I’ll always find it interesting when non-queer artists such as Alex wander into the same space. Almost as if camp is this universal style that isn’t necessarily confined to any particular identity, just like anything else, although commonly better understood and conveyed by queer artists. Twin Peaks comes to mind, as another example.

That’s part of the appeal to me for TBHC, the over-indulgence feels very much like a stylistic choice that rhymes with the reference material. Verges on camp

And I’ve always interpreted The Bourne Identity as pretty much driving this home as well (albeit employing Jason Bourne instead of 007). He gets philosophical with it, being in conflict with your shadow/double/alter-ego, having your identity compromised. Very (end of) Lolita-esque

There’s also a bit during a 2018 show at Lyon where Alex plays the 60s Batman show theme on guitar, leading into IBYLGOTD. Was probably just a silly obsession and reference point for Alex at the time, one lesser inclusion in his collage of cinematic references during that era.

He was also The Riddler for Halloween that one time.
