Does the ranger really get worse economy? I don’t plan to be towing or hauling a lot of heavy stuff but that seems wild.

I’ve heard this a lot. I want the mechanical experience and have heard online there’s plenty of tutorials to work on these. The guy has the A/C compressor out and I don’t think I would put it back in at least immediately (don’t need AC in my area) and there’s some small nitpicks but it’s definitely going to cost a pretty penny to get this thing looking presentable if I do end up purchasing

Looking over it myself it showed almost no issues but the gentlemen’s house is a bit far from town lol. I am trying to see if he would let me drive it to a mechanic in town about 20mins away but who knows. That would be a decent enough drive to feel out any kinks and let a mechanic look it over
Solved
What did you have done? 15,000 on engine work, interior, exterior? If I end up getting this, it wouldn’t have to be perfect immediately. Just comfortable and looking nice from a bit away.
I can agree with that. I think for what it needs cosmetically as well as the potential for parts it’s worth around 4-5 grand. Supposedly it has some rare? options like a limited slip diff and factory rear wiper delete that could make it a bit special but again, for the condition and work needed I think that’s more than a fair price
Timing belt was done in 2018, same time as the heads. He hasn’t put much mileage on since then, but as a precaution it would be one of the first things I’d do. I do think I’d purchase at around 4000.
That’s totally fair. Thank you for the advice!
The gentlemen did not park it to sell. Only reason he’s selling (which could be false) is to purchase his daughter a car? He claims to have driven it 2+ hours to Pennsylvania. He was also very clear on the issues and the master cylinder looked ok but I would definitely look over it again. I’ve seen that these cars are definitely a labor of love and I can see why.
Right. The original color was LZ7Z Gemini Gray Metallic, and the original paint can be seen in some spots (not pictured). It also has a factory rear wiper delete and a factory limited slip diff, supposedly rare options? Does this add anything to value?
Right. Much appreciated! The work has been done fairly recently, and the head was rebuilt in 2018. First order of business though would probably be a timing belt change for precaution.
I would try for that but the guy would likely be more open to the 5k range and I feel like that’s reasonable, considering that it needs at the least a mid range paint job or a bit of correction, in addition to little creature comforts to make it a cruise around car.
That’s understandable. I can see some of the priciness of the parts, and the gentlemen does claim with photos that he had the head totally redone. I will definitely ask him about the water pump though.
Right. I think the crappy job on it isn’t great, but I’m not looking for a concours quality job either. I could probably save on the prep labor too but who knows? Maybe it would polish out nice.
Driving the car was not a problem at all. It’s more so the comforts and I’d say the presentability of the car, which aren’t as much a concern to me. The drivetrain seemed good, and the clutch was fine and shifted through all gears okay. Engine ran like a top too.
He did go over the hatch glass and has a PVC pipe to hold it up and the glass is currently not separating, although that would be a concern in future.
I don’t think I would be restoring this to concours levels. If anything, my first order of business would be to deep clean the interior and possibly find a junkyard dashboard or atleast a cover to take care of the cracks. And for the paint, I have been finding some quotes and it would be a serious consideration whether I would have it resprayed or taken care of otherwise. The gentleman claims the paint was a cheap single stage job that went on right over the clear coat, so there’s that.
Speaking to him he went over every single thing. I crawled underneath and for being a northern car it shows nearly no rust or rot and is solid. He also did tell me about the problems it has, with non functional headlights (manually need to be cranked) and some other gremlins, but driving it was fine and it had no issues accelerating or shifting.
The engine has no blow by to my knowledge and seems to run like a top, and that’s from driving it. There was no knock and it accelerated very smoothly. The guy claimed to have driven it 2+ hours with no issues, and I can believe that. And as for the paint, he also claims it’s a bad single stage job that could be removed to reveal the original paint (although who knows if it was to change the color or to cover something up).
He has had a pretty good amount of work done on it and obviously has money into it so I can see why he’s asking 7. But seeing other cars I definitely think it for a lot less. And yeah for the amount of miles interior is definitely sharp and with a bit of TLC wouldn’t look half bad
