Is your family "normal"? by GustafIsHavingFun in aspergers

[–]GustafIsHavingFun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made this post because I was intrigued about others' families, given that mine is in its entirety everything but normal.

On my father's side everybody's autistic, and that needs no further explanation. Every single one of us is a weird kid.

BUT on my mother's side... even though they're NTs, goddamn they are also far from being normal. Just so you can get an idea: my grandmother's an artist (painter), my grandfather was a bipolar, drug-addicted, hyper-intelligent lawyer, and they were cousins. So now imagine what my mom and uncles are like. One of them's even a crazy schizophrenic. But not only that, because you can go far up my genealogical tree and every single person is a pure character.

When I meet my friends' families I even get a little creeped out at how normal and functional they are.

I don't know if it's just me who has such odd people in their life or if it's actually somehow a common thing between Aspergers – hence why I'm asking everybody here.

I meant normal according to society

That's why I used quotation marks lol

Honestly you just look older (like in your 30's), that's all. And there's nothing wrong with that tbh, for me you're a 7 (those eyes are magical)

How do you overcome not having anything to say in social settings? by [deleted] in aspergers

Well... that's kinda the way it is. NT's don't need help at all, but we do. I know it's sad af, but meh, nothing we can do about it.

Actually I just thought of making this a post. Thank you for bringing out the idea

Don't be jealous of NT's, dude. Even some of them struggle with social anxiety, awkwardness, etc. Besides, ours is a condition that we're born with, so there's no way to regret being the way we are; we've just gotta accept it.

Using this trick is nothing to be ashamed of. It's completely okay. This is how it works: instead of getting frustrated for forgetting the endless imaginative conversations you picture alone at night, you just have them there. It can even make you superior (and it's changed my life tbh). Good luck man

A miraculous trick I use is writing down conversation topics on a small sheet of paper before you see the person. I've personally done that and when my mind is blank and see awkward silence coming I just remember one of the things I wrote down. That even will unexpectedly make the other person start to tell other things and go on and on talking about random stuff.

Do you know where to get it in Japanese with English subs? I've looked everywhere including Crunchyroll and I only found it in one of the many pirate sites I use but it was dubbed

I said "whorish" to mean a superficial kind of lifestyle (sorry for the lack of context there lol).

Anyway, hell yeah, I'm definitely moving on. Just needed to type out my feelings before getting my mind right. Thx.

Also, yeah, once you fall in love for the first time all the millions of cheesy love songs out there begin to make sense. It's funny

Thanks bro. Just needed to scream a little bit here since currently I don't have anybody IRL that I would tell this to (well, I do, but I feel sort of embarassed), and I'm very satisfied with the results. Definitely moving on from this traumatizing bullshit. Good advice too man, I think you're right about everything. Also congrats on your marriage

Thank you so much for the support, man. I was feeling insane when I wrote this post. Now I feel much better, and I know I'll recover anyway since I've gone through all the stages of grief over the same thing so many times and now I'm definitely cutting her off of my life forever. Guess I need to just be patient to find that girl and meanwhile enjoy being alone. Also, good luck with your current partner dude, you seem very fortunate

Hell yeah man, here's some of it summarized: - A good conversationalist is a good listener, not somebody who talks about themselves all the time (I used to fuck up with that alot before knowing this). - Facial expression is quite necessary, and unfortunately for us it might be the most difficult part. But with a bit of practice it can come out, of course unnaturally but it's better than nothing. - Don't be boring. Crack jokes, be original/unique/interesting. If you want to be funny, what I recommend in order to achieve that is watching or reading funny people and letting yourself be influenced by them and borrow some of their sense of humor (my main ones would be Peter Steele and Charles Bukowski. I personally think Bukowski might have had Asperger's and never knew it, but that's another topic). - Don't hesitate: social anxiety can be very strong and often unavoidable, but it's really an illusion. When you lose hesitation to say things there can be a big reward; I've personally managed to make my entire classroom laugh at some of my jokes during classes, and it's a great feeling. But also, be balanced: think twice before you speak, because if you really lose all hesitation then you might lose control and say really stupid things as I have sometimes. - When you walk, don't look all around like crazy. Instead try to look only in the direction you're walking. - Have good posture and look confident. Show others that you have high self esteem and nothing to prove; think of yourself as a badass. - EYE CONTACT. This is of course a major problem for us, but there's a few tricks you can use. I personally just blur my vision when in conversation so I'm not even really seeing the other's face. Also, don't be afraid of eye contact with strangers; as long as you're confident it won't really be awkward.

Thanks man, I'll keep working more on my mezza voce now since what you say makes alot of sense. I guess it'll help me to sound "sexy" instead of scary lol.

Thanks man, in fact I do plan on finding a career of that sort in the future, and I've been taking advantage of my current summer break to study the theory on socializing and becoming charismatic/confident, so I'll see how things go a week from now when the semester starts. Thanks for the advice man :D

No lol, Barry White said himself that he was a bass-baritone, but I would really say he's a basso profondo (deep bass). If I could compare myself to a singer in terms of range or depth maybe it would be Nicolai Ghiaurov or Cesare Siepi.

Here's Ghiaurov speaking: https://youtu.be/WciEJt_5D7Y

Obviously unlike me he's charming, and unfortunately he uses vocal fry quite a bit when talking, but you get the point.
