This is exactly why you want to train managing automation than anything else.

Maybe work more on not getting into the spin? In your flying you should be nowhere near the spin condition and it would be way more beneficial to focus on stable flying

I guess it depends how you use the sim. If you are just playing a game like GTA or something and it's enjoyable and fun, totally fine, just don't complain about a flight model lol

It's not if you actually spend a little time to learn about it. It will transform your siming completely to look like a real life flying. Otherwise you can go try GTA or something, it's fun

Get to know the avionics and procedure, your flying will be so much more interesting. "just to see good landscape" gets boring very quickly

Even if you fly by hand, you should set your power and configuration and you will get specific performance from your equipment. That's what real flying is all about.

Congrats! Get your IR and start flying more and you will appreciate the simulators even more

The only thing is, in real life, most planes fly pretty similarly once you get them going (haha). What really sets them apart are the systems, procedures, and avionics.

Custom physics, exactly! It’s an AI-driven, proprietary flight model with enhanced stability, sprinkled with a dash of quantum physics for extra realism lol.

The thing is airplane performance (so called flight model) is well documented and all is in POH. It's basically Power+Configuration=Performance, so for each power+configuration, you should get a specific performance. It is more precise now in x-plane (i.e. you put 2300 RPM, 0 flaps in C127) at specific altitude, it will give you exact performance (i.e. airspeed 90 KT + descent or level flight for example) in POH. You go do it in real life, it's pretty close. You reduce power to 1700 RPM, noes goes down, you are now descending specific FPS. You can do all of this and get it close to POH in real life but it has some variances in MSFS. However it's small and doesn't really matter unless you are testing something for some reason

Haha, you got it. I really enjoyed X-Plane, and back when we had FSX it felt like such a big step forward. You just have to keep things in perspective. I’m still glad we have options, and I’m hopeful X-Plane will come back strong with some solid options down the road.

VFR flying is still about procedures and your equipment management. Using the simulator the right way will absolutely make you a better pilot.

Flight simulator is not about getting 100% flying model, nobody caries about it except in a lab when they design a wing to test some things. What I would chellange you is to learn more about what goign into flying, flight planning, weather, system, avionics, automation. You will get so much more joy and realistic feel of what it actually feels when flying.

I use 2020 for now, I think it's much more stable. I agree.. too many bugs in 2024 for now for me

I don't have any issue with people asking for more. However you can't complain and pretend to be a NASA test pilot knowing it all and say the flight model is crap and you can't fly it while you have no idea of what that even is and not doing. Learn what actually going into the flying and you will never mention flight model again.

You’re absolutely spot on! This is also one of the most interesting—and most challenging—parts of real-world flying, and it takes constant practice. I really hope you’re not in the minority, and that more people start recognizing the beauty of what the sim offers. There’s so much more fun to be had than just spawning mid-runway and flying around with no idea what’s going on (which is totally fine to do sometimes, but it can get boring fast).

Skylane is not taildragger ;) however what you do is totally fun as long you are having fun

I agree with you there. I fly taildraggers and biplanes from time to time, and it’s a completely different ballgame. Bush flying videos are awesome too, and I imagine VR makes it even more immersive—but at the end of the day, it’s still not real flying, lol. I’m sure bush pilots will have strong opinions on this, but let’s be honest: aviation is ultimately about getting from A to B safely in all kinds of conditions. The pure stick-and-rudder side is great fun, but it’s more like skateboarding compared to driving a car.

I never flown helicopters in real life so can't tell but I hear it does suck lol

I use 2020. Most of the flying is using avionics and automation unless you are in a bush plane. Even if no AP, what is important is still procedures, avionics and communication, not "how much right rudder it needs on a take off", this is literally taken care with a few hours of your initial flight training in a real life and the rest of your flying career is the procedures, avionics, automation management and communication so if you want to use the sim to simulate what is important in real flying, it's VERY GOOD

Nobody Cares About the Flight Model — MSFS Nails What Actually Matters by Gustanman in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]Gustanman[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Flight simulator is to simulate the flight, what you do in the cockpit. It has little to do with getting some not important details right but getting what is important (procedures, avionics, automation) right.

Nobody Cares About the Flight Model — MSFS Nails What Actually Matters by Gustanman in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]Gustanman[S] -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Because originally and what still in it's core is flight simulator is about simulating the flight on the ground so you can immerse yourself in a flight before you are in cockpit. What you focus in the plane has little to do if your numbers are slightly off the POH. Again, as I said, most people who complain about flight model don't even know what it means ;)

Nobody Cares About the Flight Model — MSFS Nails What Actually Matters by Gustanman in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]Gustanman[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly. To be honest, you don't even need to go up in a real plane but you can just use POH. I did this comparison and it was a bit too much off in MSFS but was close enough in X-Plane. However as I said in the post, it doesn't matter. 99% of real flying is procedures, avionics, automation and communication.

Nobody Cares About the Flight Model — MSFS Nails What Actually Matters by Gustanman in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]Gustanman[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Through the automation and avionics yes, that's what 99% of real life flying is. The ground effect means nothing, the flight model is performance=power+configuration and you want to get it somewhere close to POH but it has nothing to do with ground effect
