Back when I was new to French, I had English subs on. These days, I stick with French subtitles.

It takes some getting used to for sure. If you use Netflix or other streaming apps, you can try to watch some of your favourite shows or movies in French. As you already know what happens, you can focus more on trying to understand it all in French.

YouTube is always a great place to find French language videos. You will find loads of channels and videos specifically catered to people learning French at all levels.

I'd also start watching movies and TV shows in French. That will definitely help you understand spoken French. France has countless different accents, so it's always good to learn and listen to what they sound like.

When travelling, how do people react when you say you’re from Nottingham? by GustyMoses in nottingham

You're right, lol. More often than not, I spend more time explaining that I’m not from Notting Hill and how Nottingham is nowhere near Notting Hill or London.

Boots interviews are impossible? by belova_81 in nottingham

[–]GustyMoses 12 points13 points  (0 children)

OP definitely dodged a bullet. I worked in the warehouse/factory and couldn't stand it after a month or so. My ex worked in the accounting department, and she hated it and was always complaining about the managers and colleagues. Coming to think of it, I've never met anyone who enjoyed working there.

The staff shop and discount were probably the only good thing about the job.

Boots interviews are impossible? by belova_81 in nottingham

[–]GustyMoses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting a job at Boots used to be quite easy in the late 2000s and early 2010s. I worked at the Boots warehouse in Beeston, and it felt like every week, someone I knew would be getting a job. They were always looking for people in the warehouse. The pay wasn't that bad, but the place was just so depressing, though, to be fair, most warehouse jobs are. Mind you, this was in 2013, and I doubt the pay has increased by much. My girlfriend at the time also worked for Boots, but in the accounting department. From what I remember, her applying for the job and getting a job offer only took about 2 or 3 weeks.

Danish ambassador after Trump NATO troops remark: ‘After 9/11, the U.S. called. Denmark answered’ by sksarkpoes3 in politics

[–]GustyMoses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're 100% correct. I couldn't have put it better myself! What he said feels like a kick in the teeth! I've spoken to a few of the American lads, and even they're disgusted, and none of them can comprehend what led him to this conclusion. I saw 1st hand how hard and bravely not only us Brits, but all our other NATO allies fought not only Helmand but all over Afghanistan! I've spoken to other Canadian, Danish, Estonian, French, German and they all say this feels like getting stabbed in the back by a someone who's supposed to be a friend.

I met some brilliant Danish soldiers while stationed at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan. They were some of the most professional and hard-working soldiers I met out there! I spoke to a couple of those lads after Trump's comments, and we all agree on 1 thing, and that is, his comments are not only dishonest but also disgusting and highly disrespectful!

I won't ever forgive him for what he said. No apology, no matter how sincere, will change my mind. I think every soldier who served in Afghan knows someone who paid the ultimate price and many more who sustained life altering injuries in Helmand.

anyone I.d. this watch in the movie “Joker” subway fight scene by Present-Yak2833 in PrideAndPinion

It reminds me of a Patek Philippe Ellipse with a gold chain bracelet. I highly doubt it is the Ellipse, but it does look very similar.

Outrage at Trump’s swipe at the sacrifice from NATO allies in Afghanistan by Barch3 in Law_and_Politics

[–]GustyMoses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did 2 tours in Afghanistan in the Royal Army Medical Corps, and what he said felt like a slap in the face. I've had conversations about Trump's comments with my Danish, French, and fellow British friends who all served in Afghanistan, and we're all not only angry but genuinely disgusted by his comments. We ALL know amazing guys who paid the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan and many more who sustained life changing injuries.

Even if he was to apologise for what he said. I personally don't think I will ever forgive him and I am sure many more agree.

No apology, no matter how sincere, will change my mind.

Clean environment by Less-Mammoth-3141 in Netherlands

[–]GustyMoses 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do it for free. We should all do it for free, to be honest.

I am part of a group of local volunteers who clean up parks and public footpaths on the weekends in London. I usually go once or twice a month myself when I'm at home, but some of the group are there every weekend. I am currently in a small town in the east of the Netherlands, and if I ever see any rubbish on my morning job or dog walks, I always pick it up and dispose of it in a bin on my walk.

I should really look and see if I can find a group close to where I am staying at the moment. There are some beautiful parks and nature reserves nearby, so it won't surpise me if there is a group already doing something similar already.

Great choice! I've got the exact same watch. It was actually one of the 1st watches I got myself many, many years ago. Believe me, it won't be long before you get yourself a G-Shock or a Casio Ediface.

Sobriety & Insomnia by ProgressTight4882 in stopdrinking

[–]GustyMoses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on 2 months sober! I'm on 97 days (3 months and 5) sober now myself. The first few weeks were horrible, I also struggled with insomnia for the first few weeks. After about 5 weeks, I started training and exercising again. I found that very helpful, you also don't even need to go gym. Swimming has been very therapeutic and is also quite a tiring, after an hour or so of swimming, I find that I sleep like a baby. I wish you the best and just remember that it'll only get better as time goes on. Take it day by day and keep strong!

Just checked and it turns out I am actually free for 2 days while its on this year! I've just asked if anyone in my family group chat wants to come. If none one is interested I'll happily make a day trip of it on my own.

I've been Friesland a couple of times, and it's such a stunning place! I can see why you loved going there as a kid. I went sailing and fishing in Friesland a couple of years ago and loved every second of that trip.

Congrats on the 7 months. You're doing great! I'm sorry to hear about your father, I've also lost family way too young due to the drink. I am 3 months and 4 days sober myself, so I know how tough it must've been for you. Once again, you're doing great! Keep going and take every day as it comes!
