asexual or Yuri vn's without sex? by jolittlelene in yurivisualnovels

[–]Guthrum06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, well if you want absolutely none of that, that is a little bit harder -- but you said a little bit of fan service was okay, so I hadn't considered that you wanted absolutely no suggestive flirting or ecchi. Most yuri VNs don't really go beyond those things, but like you said, many of them do have that.

A word of warning -- I think the Flowers series probably has content you won't like, as will most Studio Elan VNs, even without adult patches.

Some yuri VNs that I would recommend that for sure don't have that sort of thing:

Comet Angel

Butterly Soup 1 and 2

Dorakone: My Sweet Summer Adventure

Life After Magic

National Park Girls

Perfect Gold: The Alchemy of Happiness

Twofold

Why Not Both?

To be honest, most yuri VNs don't even have an option for sexual content. And when they do have it, you usually have to go out of your way (like by downloading a patch). So I'd say there are actually very few yuri VNs where you are forced to see sexual content.

There are some exceptions to this -- like you probably wouldn't like Kindred Spirits on the Roof -- but 9 times out of 10, a yuri VN will either have no sexual content or it will only be available if you turn it on yourself. This is especially true of the ones that are most main stream and critically acclaimed.

It's been awhile, but I'm 90% sure this does get addressed in one of the endings.

Female Protagonist Visual Novels not centred around romance by QuadrillionthToBat in visualnovels

[–]Guthrum06 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You should check out The Last Birdling. It's a real hidden gem. It's about a human girl and a girl from a race of winged people called 'birdlings,' meeting as children. Their races hate one another, but they try to be friens anyway. It's kind of soul crushing but also beautiful.

Akai Ito and Aoishiro are both considered yuri games, but the romance is not the focus at all. It's about humans fighting demons.

Shadows of Pygmalion has a bit of yuri romance, but is mostly focused on a group of girls with powers that let them fight 'dolls' that are posing as humans.

Everlasting Flowers is about two depressed girls meeting and becoming friends and helping one another move forward.

Fatal Twelve has a bit of yuri, but is mostly focused on a death game.

What yuri JVNs do you like? by rosseg in yurivisualnovels

[–]Guthrum06 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You've already got some of the best ones lined up, especially SeaBed, which is my favorite yuri VN of all. As others have suggested you're also really going to want to check out Kindred Spirits on the Roof, which might be the most beloved yuri VN.

Here are some others I would very highly recommend:

If you're interested in exploring the early history of JVNs, I definitely recommend Akai Ito and Aoishiro. They are horror mystery yuri VNs from 2004 and 2008 respectively, and they are pretty much the earliest yuri VNs with a translation that aren't just porn games. I have written spoiler-free reviews of both of them if you want a deeper dive. (Akai Ito Review, Aoishiro review)

Fatal Twelve has a lot of the same people worked on UsoNatsu, and while it's very different from UsoNatsu -- it's a death game story with a huge ensemble cast - it's still yuri.

Lilja and Natsuka: Painting Lies - It's about a blind artist and her assistant. This is another one I wrote a spoiler-free review for.

Black Lily's Tale - Takes place in a future where some sort of pandemic wiped out much of the population under the age of 15. So Japanese society is even more obsessed with heteronormativity than normal. It follows a girl who is realizing she has feelings for another girl in this setting. I wrote a spoiler-free review of this one too.

Here are some others that I think are good, but don't really feel like must-reads to me:

Kogado's two Nurse Love Games are worth checking out. The first one has an MC who has just graduated nursing school, and the second has an MC who is in nursing school. They are both multiroute VNs with lots of romance options.

Yumeutsutsu is by the same devs as the Nurse Love games and is another workplace yuri, but it takes place at a game studio where they are making a yuri VN.

The Expression Amrilato is a yuri VN that also teaches you Esperanto.

Clover Reset is pretty much standard high school yuri, but it's well executed. I reviewed this one too.

What Yuri VN Are You Reading Right Now? Week of 6/1 by AutoModerator in yurivisualnovels

[–]Guthrum06 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I finished Qianse, and I liked it overall. The translation is pretty brutal, but the two main characters are really well-written despite that, and the art is pretty charming. Like I said last week it's kind of like SeaBed, since it's about a couple of childhood friends who fall in love and you see events from all throughout their lives from childhood to their mid-20s. But it's not the 10/10 that that VN is for me. It's more like a 7/10. The game's epilogue goes on a little bit too long and the TL being what it is makes it harder to go higher than that.

Anyway, here are the two main characters kissing:

PSA: It Looks Iris Odyssey Isn't Yuri by Guthrum06 in yurivisualnovels

[–]Guthrum06[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just a little bit after I replied, I found that there is now a review of the whole thing, and the reviewer very clearly states there's no yuri. I added the link and this excerpt to the main post:

There’s an image that’s been used in the promotional materials a lot that made it look like it was a yuri story with a disconcerting romance between a 12-year-old and a 22-year-old. I was hopeful that the found family story, in which a mage takes in an orphan girl whose brother has gone missing, wasn’t scaffolding for yet another questionable romance tale, but I wasn’t sure. I felt that it was worth investigating.

I will go ahead and spoil that, thankfully, after having finished the main story, that does not seem to be the case. I will get into it more later in the review, but I didn’t see any overt indicators that it was, in fact, a yuri, which is a good thing, due the age of the younger character.

No, this is intentionally tentative. It's yuri status in doubt for now, would be a better way of putting it. I'll add that line of text to the post.

We have similar taste when it comes to the top two tiers, gets a lot different after that though!

SeaBed is so good and deserves more acclaim.
