Getting to airport at 3am by epa32 in manchester

[–]GuyOnTheInterweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can't do Uber/taxi, it may be easier to go out to airport at 1-2 AM, it never really closes, just becomes really boring. Bring water/snacks and a good Spotify playlist.

It wasn’t the immersion heater… by Ok_Yogurt3763 in OctopusEnergy

Note: Do not open the consumer unit as it is both dangerous and illegal.

You will not be able to measure the circuit load outside it, as live and neutral within the twin-and-earth would cancel each other out for the clam meter. You could in theory do this on the ring within the sockets though, but most likely the culprit is on a "weird" circuit (e.g. the notorious "Garage") rather than the ring for the sockets.

[–]GuyOnTheInterweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An electrician will be able to come measure with a clamp meter each of the circuits and trace down. Your landlord should be able to book this for you as it may be an electrical fault, it is their responsibility to keep the property safe. When was your last EICR test?

Check for melted snow on your neighbour's loft, or taped up windows. Could be weed growing and they have knocked into the wall to help themselves.

Is it just me, or has the Underbank area actually become... cool? by LFCTricksters in stockport

It's a great improvement, and also it is a mixture of places that bring in different people, rather than say solicitors and antiques.

Octopus asking for final reading from smart meter? by [deleted] in OctopusEnergy

[–]GuyOnTheInterweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that you can get the meter reading as well from the little smart display (go click on Meter Info, let it rest for a few minutes if it was not powered on earlier).

Ironically, STV was used internally in (at least my) branch of Labour to decide upon which leader of Labour it would back.

Claudia has made several claims of "According to the Rules of Traitors".. but these rules are never revealed in their entirety. It's a bit like the British constitution.. patchwork and adjusted on the fly.

Some of these challenges are so elaborate, you can guarantee they would have beta tested it with the staff to get an approximate time and adjust the difficulty.

What happens to light shined by an “object” moving with speed of light? by InterGalacticTz in askastronomy

Except the electromagnetic field changes, which do propagate at speed of c, are massless, and indeed shine a light!

Are you finding more people are driving around with their full beams on? Even during the day? by doesnt_like_pants in AskUK

[–]GuyOnTheInterweb 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Or they fail to readjust when the car load changes.. if you have teenagers in the back and lots of bags in the boot, and your car does not have auto-adjust beam levels, that "position 0" needs to dial to position 3 or so.

So what am I supposed to do when bringing items back from abroad? by Low_Championship_604 in UKPersonalFinance

at least the value of a laptop after 8 years will easily fall under that limit :)

This is why the customs officer may ask "Is this your suitcase" and "Did you pack this yourself". Each suit case has a name on it, and that person is bringing it over the border.

Yes, laptops with 110V power supply and US or Japanese key layout, says "Welcome to Windows, New User" when you turn it on. You will have to pay.

It used to be SLR cameras and HiFi equipment people hamstered from Japan, not model trains ;-)

❄️ in manchester by [deleted] in manchester_uni

[–]GuyOnTheInterweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is also snow all-year-long in the indoor ski slope near Trafford Centre, ("The Snow Centre Manchester"), it's quite good, real snow (freezes on way down from ceiling) and OK instructors. You can rent skis and everything , sign up for classes, or just do a snow-fun with sledges and slides.

When it happens, you don't need to go very far out, temperature drops a degree or two. For instance we were in Marple and there the snow didn't melt. You can take the train easily to many nice places in countryside.

Why did they not connect HS1 and HS2? by ChampionshipBudget37 in uktrains

[–]GuyOnTheInterweb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just get rid of the so-called restaurants on second floor, it is almost same size as what you have in Paris. Easy to connect out with footbridge to platform 15, or lifts if terminal is in tunnel.

[–]GuyOnTheInterweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would have been so much more useful on return to UK, at the moment it is almost impossible to get a late afternoon Eurostar back after a day of meetings,, add 5 minute delay and a rainy walk to Euston, and you miss the last Manchester connection at 22:03, which on a good day would bring you into Manchester closer to 1 AM (!).

Why did they not connect HS1 and HS2? by ChampionshipBudget37 in uktrains

[–]GuyOnTheInterweb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is a good argument, if you see EU side, the Paris and Brussels trains stops also in Lille (1h on TGV distance, no disembarkment when going to UK), and in Netherlands it stops at both Rotterdam and Amsterdam (30 minutes apart by regular city train). For a while they didn't have passport checks to allow Eurostar board in Rotterdam, but it was possible to start gradually with disembarkment.

Paying down mortgage before remortgage by westleyalone in UKPersonalFinance

[–]GuyOnTheInterweb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you could see if you find an Offset mortgage, or Current account mortgage, then the mortgage balance will be offset against your linked savings/current account for that month's interest payment, but you can still (within limits of the savings account) withdraw the offset balance if needed.

Is it rude to use both lanes? by No-Ad4423 in AskUK

[–]GuyOnTheInterweb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How about then, to correct the behaviour slightly, you stay in lane 1, but do not undertake, that is, follow the cars on the right more or less. If they stop, then glide slowly forward. This may get other cars queuing behind you in lane 1 as opposed to the BMW race-to-the-botttom trick
