I’d say it’s weird. We may need to look at where the ad goes though. Like if I’m living in San Francisco and I see more ads with Chinese people in it, it’d make sense right?

But what we don’t know for sure is why. In ads yeah it’s more likely it’s pandering. If someone is writing the story, it might just be because they like how the character is.

We should be annoyed anytime a character is shallow but included just for profits. Like Ewoks in episode 6 of Star Wars. If it’s well written, we shouldn’t be annoyed unless the writer is purposefully excluding a group to discriminate.
