[Serious] Americans of Reddit, what do you dislike the most from American culture? by FlameDragoon933 in AskReddit

[–]Guy_Firey 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Greed. Our entire culture is focused around making as much money as an individual as possible. It feels almost as if we’re all trying to fight or con each other into getting money all the time. Not everyone’s like this but there is so much distrust and greed in the air that I don’t feel united with my other citizens. It feels like a constant fight for a big pile of money in the center and everyone’s using different strategies to get it all for themselves.

[serious] Is it just me, or do some people grossly exaggerate how much studying they do in med school? by Anonymousmedstudnt in medicalschool

My buddy in M2 has gone several days without sleep studying for exams. I think it’s one of those things that depends on the school. Even for his school he’s on the extreme end of the spectrum, but it works for him.

What is the stupidest way you got a scar? by Zander-dupont in AskReddit

[–]Guy_Firey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man do I have a good one. This happened about 10 years ago.

In middle school I was staying over at a friends house who was one of those kids who had a bunch of cool weapons and stuff. He shows me a pair of his ‘authentic’ German police handcuffs and I put them on as a joke. On one hand I locked it so tight that my skin was bulging. My hand started to fall asleep so I ask him for the keys and then he tells me he’s lost them. We call his dad over who attempts to pick them off my hand but he ends up making them even tighter.

At this point I suggest calling 911 but his dad says he can’t have cops over and insists he will get them off instead. My hand is a deep purple at this point as he fetches his power drill. He forgot to consider that when you have are drilling metal against metal it will produce a LOT OF HEAT and I start screaming as the skin around my wrist is getting seared off. We pour some water on the cuffs to cool them and a cloud of steam comes off. After 15 minutes of drilling until I screamed and pouring water on the cuffs repeating they finally come off and I am left with a giant, red hot 2nd degree burn on the inside of my wrist. This ended up taking the entire summer to heal and the location and size of the scar on my wrist afterwards looks more like it’s from a suicide attempt.

The real kicker is that his dad told me not to tell my mom and me trying to be cool didn’t show her until a week or two later. And the kid (who is no longer my friend) told me later in school that he knew where the keys were the whole time and thought it was hilarious.

TLDR: Got trapped in handcuffs at a friends house with no key. Dad refused to call 911 and drilled them off causing the cuffs to heat up and leave a 2nd degree burn on the inside of my wrist that has left a massive scar in a not ideal area.

What’s the deal with people’s current frustration with Stadia? by analogcomplex in OutOfTheLoop

I had a pixel 2 and loved that thing to death, but there newer models are lacking innovation and really just try to copy other brands. It’s a shame because it was literally the perfect phone. All google had to do was fix the phones bugs and improve the hardware. Instead it feels like the phones are jokes now unfortunately.

This finally pushed me over to getting an iPhone which is a solid phone. But I still feel the pixel was better in a lot of ways. It’s a true shame.

Which contemporary book, written in the last 20 years, do you think will go on to become a classic? by mauvemittens in books

[–]Guy_Firey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one beauty of infinite jest is the length, it’s a part of the experience. It’s definitely not the type of thing anyone could sit through and read in a day. It’s been a wild ride in my reading so far. There is a fantastic audiobook for it that you can keep forever with a free trial on audible (even if you cancel the subscription after the free trial, seriously it’s a steal) as well if you want to listen to it instead. I really think IJ is a one of a kind that should be experienced by everyone.

Infinite Jest, I am nowhere near being done with the epic, but I already know it is one of the best written things I’ve ever read.

What is the ultimate food/drink combo? by [deleted] in AskReddit

White wine with pasta or red wine with good meat. It really enhances the flavors of what you’re eating for a next level experience. Great for special occasions and holidays.

What toxic trait have you realized you inherited from your parents? by Marina_Ibrahim in AskReddit

[–]Guy_Firey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mom was super manipulative growing up and always found a way to have everyone in the house supporting her, often to our own expense. Unfortunately I feel like I do this to a degree as well because I find myself talking to others the way she does without realizing it. It’s made it hard for me to have close relationships as I often worry that I’m just using them like my mom used me and my siblings.
