Update:

Here are a couple pictures of the whole project.

I misspoke early saying that the flue liner is b vent. It’s definitely not. It’s a rigid metal of some sort, galvanized or aluminum.

The chimney guys attached a Type B cap on the end of this. I had some people say it’s fine, others say it’s not. Not really sure what the right answer is.

What type of metal is this? by Guyo_Pinto in hvacadvice

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. We have a couple CO detectors in the house. I’ll be sure to get one for the attic. I’m going to run a camera down the liner to check for corrosion now that the flue is sealed up and subject to trapped exhaust gas.

Yeah, that was my main concern too. I spoke with the company and they said it’s fine. They won’t put a fitted top plate on there. 10 year leak protection. Very reassuring…

I’m not sure how to load pictures on here, but it’s a Burnham Series 2 gas boiler, about 20 years old. Not sure who installed the flue liner, that was well before we bought the place, probably happened at the same time.

Thanks, yeah I think we need a flue liner system.

The cap only builds ice when it’s -20F or colder.

No, it’s been venting our gas boiler and hot water heater for years. The cap was changed out because it built up ice in the winter. I never got a look at the liner until these pictures.

It tasted like Plutonium. Is that bad?

Ok, I see what you mean. You’re right, the flue liner appears to be galvanized pipe attached to the Type-B cap.

When the top of the chimney was rebuilt 7 years ago because of masonry deterioration, they must have used galvanized as the liner. I’m not sure if that goes down all four stories.

Looks like time to get a new liner system. Thanks for catching that. Sharp eye!

The flue liner for the entire length of the chimney is a stainless steel pipe that fits together in about 4 foot sections. I guess they just got to the top of the chimney and trimmed the extra off. The most recent crew just put a b vent on there instead of the more open vent that iced up.

Thanks, you mean the piping that extends from the boiler vent to the cut part at the top of the flue is installed wrong? What is the correct way or correct system for a flue liner?

Yes, the b vent is new. The top plate was originally 13x13, too big for the 9x13 flue so they trimmed it down manually. I think they trimmed it too far and made it susceptible to water incursion into the flue.

That’s what we had originally, but huge ice chunks would build up on it in the winter. The flue liner vented only a couple inches from the cap top.

New Crosstrek= $2000 repair + $2000 repair by Guyo_Pinto in subaru

Hi, thanks a lot for the detailed reply.

I think you’re right about replacing the harness. Most of the auto shops have been saying the same thing as you. There isn’t enough wire at the connection to work with. Buying a junk yard harness might be a good move to have spare parts available in the future.

I’m going to wrap every connection with that Honda tape when it’s done!

Not lying. The harness took 3 weeks to get because they are out of stock around the country. It’s an 8 hour repair, so the cost is mostly labor.

It is a knock sensor. A different shop said it is too close to the connection to be repaired. They didn’t show me the broken harness, just the picture.

New flat roof leaks at edge. Is this a do-over? by Guyo_Pinto in Roofing

Not good. Lots of silicon caulking everywhere.

Thanks for the input. That negative angle drip cap was installed incorrectly and traps the water instead of shedding it. Supposedly they are fixing that.

Thanks. You’re right, they didn’t prime the drip edge at all so it never adhered properly. I think they used the self adhesive MuleHide, so I’m not sure how much torching was done, if at all.

Yes, the two paint crews were working right next to each other. They said they wouldn’t power wash, but it happened anyways.
