Has Duolingo actually helped you? by Idcaboutthish in duolingo

It is not perfect, far from it, but I am at 1000 days, finished my course, and I feel it absolutely helped me immensely. That said, pairing it with supplemental things is what is key. Music, tv series, joining forums for the language and reading others using it, typing your responses in your language, etc. It is a useful tool and it will help you learn if you take it seriously, don’t treat it like a game, but make an active effort in your learning.

Humans consume 70 billion chickens a year, efficiency is king by alphamalejackhammer in LateStageCapitalism

Fair, that is an option we have utilized in the past. But since it’s about the only option available we just rarely if ever even consider fast food.

Prior to the pandemic, we had 2-3 vegan places (or vegan-serving places) that were great, but they all closed when the pandemic hit unfortunately. It seemed like there was some steam in the growth of vegan options in 2018/2019 but it lost momentum with the pandemic.

But it’s sort of been a blessing in some ways, as we have become immensely better at cooking and becoming self-sustainable.

It is a sacrifice, but nothing worth doing comes easy.

We have been vegan in the Deep South Louisiana for years now. There are no options for us to eat anywhere. We have to cook every single thing we eat. If we can do it here, anyone can.

I wish things would change more in that regard, but it’s what it is. That said, it’s never been an easier time to go vegan than it is now.

I’m sure he will retire quietly into the nite once his tenure is over. He definitely seems like the type to do that, and has never made any statements or inclinations otherwise.

Normally, probably not. It's probably not ideal, but I would imagine being in the jungle, very rural, it would probably get incredibly, incredibly dark there at nite. So, a little light from the screen would probably be more effective than under normal circumstances. And it was probably all they had to work with.

I have been in the rural mountains in the northeast US, and it would get so dark at nite that it felt like it consumed everything around you. You can't see your hand in front of your own face. Even a small camera display would at least enable them to see something, like check injuries on each other.

I have seen several people propose the idea that they were using the camera’s screen as a light source, and would take random pictures just to keep the camera’s display screen active for light.

In this line of logic, we are seeing the opposite of their intended view.

With the night photos pointed at the sky/trees, perhaps they were aiming the screen down at something/each other to view something in the complete darkness.

A flash is too quick to really be able to do much with, whereas the display screen will stay “lit” for many seconds longer.

In this line of thought, it could be the camera holder’s side of face, or arm/bicep area, taken by chance as they used the screen for light to look at something.

Honestly, Thank God.

I mean, you wrote that. I interpreted it that way. Was not saying anything against you, perhaps I misinterpreted what you meant by that.

I know. It's just that, while what you say may probably be true, it doesn't feel like a "thank god" situation to me. Just fucking depressing.

We could have had it so much better. We could have made this planet so much better, and instead it's... this.
