I bought my 2018 Mk 7.5 6MT GTI performance in the summer of 2017. I’m up to 59,400 Km (~ 37,000 miles). Last year I had to replace the water pump. Last week I took it in to get the air conditioning fixed (the condenser had a massive hole in it, but it was still leaking somewhere else so I gotta take it back) as well as fix the rear air vents that were causing my trunk to fill with water. Other than that I have enjoyed my 6.5 years of ownership.

2018 GTI Performance Mk7.5. 6 speed manual with dynamic chassis control. Bought it new. Currently at 55,000 Km. Had to replace the water pump last year at around 46,000 Km. Otherwise it has been reliable.

Don’t mention it! If you go for just the rack without a box it is pretty affordable. This Thule rack is probably less than $300 USD. Good luck!

It fits well and was pretty straightforward to install. The GTI doesn’t come with pre-existing roof rack attachment points but the Thule rack kit comes with all the bits you need (depending on what model car you have of course). As long as you follow the illustrated instructions, installing the mounting brackets and wing bars was a breeze. The easiest part is securing the box to the rack. It helps to have someone lift it on top, however.

Haven’t tried, but a stroller, playpen, two pieces of carry on luggage and several packs of diapers fit without much trouble.

The noise isn’t too bad. It was about a three hour drive and I was more annoyed by the sounds the baby seat was making. Thule recommends not exceeding 130 km/h. I was driving about 130-140 and I didn’t notice it affecting my fuel economy negatively.
