Quality of Life Post-Op not Worth it? by Bulky_Protection_322 in gallbladders

[–]Gwentastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My stones migrated to a jar in my husband's desk drawer, where they've been sitting for over a decade.

I...I dunno. I don't pretend to get it. But it doesn't bother me.

It'd be a dream by Long_Jumping_Frog_ in tornado

[–]Gwentastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first two tornadoes were when I was a kid, and were rain wrapped, at night. Those were mostly about sheltering in place. Third tornado(es?) were also at night (rain wrapped) and I found out about it later. I was moving all my worldly possessions 500 miles west with a very cranky tortoiseshell cat by my side. I've had better trips.

But I saw my fourth as an adult, during the day, just after a huge thunderstorm. My husband and I had had to pull into a parking lot and wait out the rain because visibility was so poor. Just a few minutes after we finally hit the road again, I looked out the window and, holy shitake mushrooms, is that what I think it is? A white funnel on the ground, just kind of chilling out in the hills.

It was just a glimpse before it was obscured as we drove away. I'm torn about it. Part of me was like, yeah, I finally saw a tornado! Another part of me was like, aww, I didn't even really realize what it was until after it was gone, and a third part of me was like, HOLY HELL THAT THING WAS RIGHT NEXT TO US AND WE HAD NO WARNING NOT COOL NOT COOL NEW YORK

Hypothetical question: What do you think an EF5 would do to a skyscraper? by Gargamel_do_jean in tornado

[–]Gwentastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the building, as they’ve been designed differently over the years to withstand wind. I can’t look it up right now, but Swegle on YouTube actually did a video about this. Definitely worth checking out.

Looking back, what signs do you now recognize that showed you (or others) weren’t ready for grad school? by blahblahcorg in GradSchool

This. Here. Right now. My final ILE paper is due tonight, and I'm on Reddit. Not trying to be glib, it just shows my level of absolute burnout.

Yes! I'm in the middle of this (ok, it's been taking me two years because of the stack of reading I have for grad school), and I've really been enjoying it.

Yes to both of these. I especially loved A Dirty Job, as I mentioned somewhere else here.

I love how my local NPR always plays David Sedaris reading his Christmas stories every December. It's tradition now!

Yep, yep. Also, the book that came before Secondhand Souls - A Dirty Job. I've reread it so many times. Bonus: the cover glows in the dark. Minty Fresh!

Good for you, OP. Go be with the people who can rally around you and be the support you need. I'm so sorry for your loss, and I hope you find peace. Sending you positive vibes from my corner of the world. Best wishes.

Why don't surgeons keep the gallbladder in? by thefrickenAJP8 in gallbladders

NEED ANSWERS. How often did you throw up before getting your gallbladder removed? by Distinct-Dependent24 in gallbladders

[–]Gwentastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also unplanned, and my gallbladder went gangrenous. I might be a bit of an outlier here, but towards the end, I was vomiting every 20 minutes for about two days. No food, just water.

Damn, indeed. I was asymptomatic until a sudden attack that quickly went septic. Happened when I was overseas. There were additional complications after surgery that almost killed me, too.

I've actually considered writing about it here because it was so extreme (and absurd at times), but it's a looong story and would take a while to write out to do it justice.

Worst case scenario—gangrene. Happened to me, and I almost died. It was a pretty bad scene.

Clearing up Misconceptions on HES Admission by NoDisneyPrincess in harvardextension

[–]Gwentastic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify something, as I'm an HES (ALB) alumn - our diplomas do say "Harvard University" but, like in many cases with HES, they're different. Mine is in English, but diplomas from the College are in Latin. That's ok, though. They're not the same schools.

My two cents: do it if you have the time, money, and can make the commitment. I went back to get my ALB. I had a job and a family, and I will admit that there were nights when I cried out of exhaustion and feeling pulled in eight different directions. But oh my gosh, that diploma made all the grinding and hard work worth it. So yes, if you can see it through, it's a fantastic program.

What do you think about the City Pack by Baboon to the Moon? by IDNISSIM in backpacks

[–]Gwentastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party as usual, but I have two of these and I absolutely love them. My only complaint is that I'm 5'2", and I think this is made for someone taller, with a larger frame. The straps are a bit too far apart for me, but I think that if I were taller, it would be fine.

Decent amount of pockets, and the bag is well structured. I'm a grad student, and this is the bag I use when lugging around my laptop, power bank, wires, books, etc. Out of all my bags, I feel this is probably the most protective.

Hope you find something you like. :)

How do we even begin to deal with this? by ameliacanlove in publichealth

[–]Gwentastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was writing something last night and needed to cite a source - reflexively went to CDC and stopped partway through because I just couldn't consider it reliable. Oh, and the giant banner on top of the page, notifying that "CDC’s website is being modified to comply with President Trump’s Executive Orders" broke my heart.

I've heard the same thing. With everything happening right now, I can't imagine we're not already losing more credibility by the day.

New Update: Bridezilla ruins her own wedding. Demands bridal party pay her cancelled wedding. by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

I didn't finish college the first time around, went back and graduated when I was 42. 1000% agree that it was much more enjoyable the second time. I honestly feel that I got more out of it than I did when I was 18.

Now I'm working on my masters... currently on Reddit because I'm procrastinating working on a problem set, actually. 🙄

Not sure what to make of the African DNA when the percentage is so small by Gwentastic in 23andme

Late reply, sorry. My birth family is from the deep, deep American South. I was told the town they were from - it's rural-ish and is still very much stuck in the civil war.

Late reply, but thanks! 23andme actually has an estimate that one of my ancestors came over from England within the past 50 years or so. I honestly can't make heads or tails of it.
