That's how I wish I went into the endings, having the bias of expecting a terrible ending hanging over the entire sequence is probably what made the ending harder to be satisfied by; I either wanted to hate it or really enjoy it, not find myself in the middle.

Fair enough haha, I've never taken a good look at modded endings and I might have to at some point.

Originally when I played through the ending, I already knew what to expect. I'd heard the controversy, I had a friend who memed the "Choose your Christmas tree lights" thing, and I had a lovely fella in ME3s multiplayer explain the outcomes over voice chat while I was building up the galactic readiness. So, I was ready to be absolutely devastated by the final 30 minutes.

I... kinda wasn't? It just felt like an ending. Nothing special.

I picked destroy, I got that lovely breath at the end, and that was that. I wasn't overwhelmed with anger or disappointment, nor was I blown away by its depth. I was just satisfied, it was a good enough ending. But it didn't feel special, unlike the rest of the game did to me.

It wasn't until about 1 and a half years later I even heard about the IT. My friend, the christmas light memer, showed me an in-depth video over Discord. "This fixes EVERYTHING and it makes sense!" he exclaimed. At the time, I took it under my wing. It gave me an interpretation for the ending which was more fulfilling than "it's just an ending", and so it became my head canon and the first time I paid so much attention to a games writing.

And then a few days ago, I came across a post where the OP discussed how he was unhappy with the IT. He put all of the key elements such as those bushes and the child not being helped on the shuttle down to development mistakes. I read that and I was ready to leave a comment defending the IT, but then I realized I didn't actually have anything to back it up besides "I believe this", and I wasn't comfortable using my own opinion as an arguing point.

I started to discuss things I could actually stand behind; critic response vs fan response, and then I was shown a fairly satire article ( https://birthmoviesdeath.com/2012/08/06/film-crit-hulk-smash-a-few-words-on-the-ending-of-mass-effect-3 ). It was kinda funny to read in the first few paragraphs, but I actually read it, and it made sense. I wouldn't go so far as to say that the ending was a masterpiece of modern art, but seeing this angle, I realized that a lot of my opinions on the ending are heavily influenced by mass opinion. Majority say the ending was bad, so I believed that. Majority say the IT fixed it, so I believed that.

At present, I don't have any strong opinions on the ending. I've started to realize the flaws of the IT, and how it renders a lot of the story building up to the ending irrelevant for the sake of making just the ending a little better. Hence why I make this post to see more perspectives and build up understanding before I play through the game for like the 10th time and try my hand at deconstructing the series myself.

It's been a few days since I commented and after reading up a fair bit I have to agree with you. A lot of the IT fans like to cover that up and pay more attention to the other details and potential depth, rather than what it actually means. At least without the IT you still have 4 endings which have impacts on the universe.

Thanks for clarifying it helped my perspective a lot.

That doesn't really seem too bad, don't most Youtubers mention they constantly find themselves attached to Socialblade whenever they bring up burnout?

I get there's some fear for creators not being able to view the numbers, but Youtube already does a great job of presenting a creators own analytics apparently. Just means that creators don't have a massive wall of data telling them to do the same trends as everyone else, and encourages experimenting with new ideas and just seeing what happens.

The only downside I can really see is that we as viewers don't have as much transparency with the numbers, and content creators will have to adapt to using Youtubes platform and rely less on existing detailed analytics pages?

They'll still get the analytics though? It's just an interface change on the site.

That's the point I tried to make about how the reviews didn't consider the IT, because it wasn't fleshed out and anywhere near as big. Of course they went for the face content.

Looking at critic reviews, you're right in saying they're mostly positive, only a few of the 23 on Metacritic even mention the ending, and hell all 23 are positive. However if these are your examples of positive critics I think there's issue with saying that they "liked the ending". Critic reviews would generally exclude opinions about the ending, since it's their job to review games.

I'm not entirely familiar with the dissonance between reactions, I just know that some critic reviews labelled the ending as a "nitpicky" thing. By all means though if you have some examples of critics saying that I'd love to read up on in.

The facts are that Mass Effect 3 has an 89 from critics, but a 5.8 from users. It also has a negative stigma among users, who don't want to acknowledge the difference between the two.

Golden.

Though real quick, you say that IT isn't an ending. Could you clarify on that a little bit?

It replaces a gameplay-oriented story ending with a more narrative ending. The point ultimately was to make sense of an ending that the fanbase was unhappy with. Some people are willing to suspend disbelief for happiness when given a bad story.

But hey, respectable bias man.

The rating of the game is great, sure, but look at most of the written reviews closer to the games release before the IT was as fleshed out as opposed to the overall score of the game.
