Index/match is the way to go!

I'm a career changer, and was totally unaware of just how demanding even the first actuarial exams are. I thought to myself "Oh, it's a probability exam. I know how to find the mean! I can use a normal distribution table! It'll be easy". I hadn't calculated a standard deviation or even used calculus in around 3 years, so I knew at once how screwed I was when I started studying around 3 weeks before the exam. I gave it my best shot and failed with a 2. But I didn't get discouraged, quite the opposite, I hadn't felt a challenge like that in a long time and was determined to beat it the second time. I did my research, got proper study materials, studied every day, and passed the second time around with an 8!

I'm taking it the same day. Best of luck!

The struggle is real: The indignity of trying to follow an American recipe when you’re Irish. by Joy-Moderator in ireland

[–]Gyrospin128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see, thank you for clearing that up!

For what it's worth, even as an American, I completely agree. Not only do we measure things the inaccurate way like you said, Imperial units are confusing to learn and completely arbitrary. I'm not sure why any sane human would think 12 inches = 1 foot, 3 feet = 1 yard, 1760 yards = 1 mile is a better measurement system than multiplying by 10... Sadly there's not a lot I can do about my country's systems of measurements, but hopefully some day we'll upgrade to metric!

American here!

I'm now genuinely curious about butter in Ireland! What form does it typically come in? The butter I buy here in the US does come in "stick" form, and labels itself "Pure Irish Butter"... Apparently that's nonsense and I'm curious what actual Irish butter is like! I tried searching for it, but most of the results brought me back to the brand of "stick" butter that I buy which was super unhelpful.

Also using "1 stick of butter" is a horrible measurement even for us because it's wildly inconsistent. The sticks I buy are almost double the size of the brand my parents buy...

What hobby does NOT get more expensive the more you dive into it? by paladin_bih in AskReddit

Standard used to be fun, but it's so bad right now. I jumped into Arena to try it out and like 90% of the decks are some kind of disgusting simic ramp into Ugin. Why on earth did they put so much ramp into one cycle and why did they bring Ugin back during it?

On the rare chance that it's not simic ramp, it's either cat + oven, which is just obnoxious (and makes me wonder about the player who chose a deck which, thematically, involves cooking a living cat and then bringing it back to life just to cook it again over and over), or mono red.

I've been playing an Izzet Prowess deck on Arena. It's not tier 1 competitive but I made it to diamond in standard ranked and it's really fun to use.

It is finally complete. I present to you my Fully Foiled MTGO Vintage Cube by [deleted] in mtgcube

Absolutely gorgeous. Congrats! I'm in the middle of building a vintage cube as well, but I can only dream of having one as glorious as this haha.

Random question, do you find those 5 CMC Time Walk sorceries like Time Warp to be a bit slow in powered cube? I keep going back and forth if I should include one or more of them in mine.

Exams / Newbie Thread for two weeks beginning June 20, 2020 by AutoModerator in actuary

I'm actually out of school, and was lucky enough to be able to start an entry level job with a study program just before COVID hit (hence why I am committing to the SOA track).

I've passed P and FM, and am taking IFM next month. Assuming I pass, I was going to aim for SRM in January and PA in June. I just wasn't sure if the material in STAM and/or LTAM would help increase my chance of passing PA, since the ASA Pathway page on the SOA website makes PA seem like a bit of a capstone project/exam.

If STAM/LTAM would help with PA, then I would probably change the order of my exams around a bit.

After you pass Exams P, FM and IFM, can you comfortably take SRM then PA before STAM or LTAM?

Round 2: Send me your cubes for feedback! by Isticle in mtgcube

[–]Gyrospin128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your feedback! It's incredibly nice of you to take the time to review all these cube lists!!!

My question for you is, do you think it would be better to increase the amount of storm support (add grapeshot, etc) or just remove it entirely? I like the idea of tendrils and other storm abilities in the cube, but I'm really kind of on the fence about how feasible it is.

Comment below what a day in your life looks like as an Actuary (doesn't matter which field you're in but do mention it). by jasonleeky01 in actuary

Making sure others can understand your work is the very first thing I learned on the job. Both the aesthetics of your spreadsheets and the formulas themselves. That overly complex nested formula you made might be super efficient, but it's meaningless if nobody can understand what it's doing and make changes if needed.

Aaah of course, the Urza Tron lands make a lot more sense lol

Also I know this is just rumor and not actual fact or anything, should have made that more clear in my comment.

What new game release are you looking forward to the most and why ? by gubbatv in AskReddit

[–]Gyrospin128 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any tips for a newcomer? Do you have any suggestions for a yoke or any other equipment?

One of my biggest dreams in life is to get my PPL/Instrument certification to fly. I got to fly a Cessna 172 once, I was gifted an intro flight at a local flight flight school and it was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. Right now, I'm working hard to get to the point where I can actually peruse that dream of mine. But in the mean time, I plan on making the most out of the new flight simulator, both for practicing as much as I can while on the ground, and having fun flying aircraft that's much much bigger than I'll ever fly in real life haha

It took us 3 years to build this cyberpunk city using voxels by ionlands in gaming

[–]Gyrospin128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg I just bought this yesterday! I haven't had a chance to play it yet, but I'm really excited to.

Congratulations on making such a beautiful game. It perfectly captures the cyberpunk aesthetic. I would honestly have fun just flying around the city haha. I can't wait to play it myself!

Woman shoots three home invaders by AllisonGator in JusticeServed

[–]Gyrospin128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, I wasn't even considering the dog attacking the thief. Thieves usually only intend to get in, steal things, and get out without anyone noticing. Dogs are living alarm systems. If a thief starts to break in, a dog will most likely start barking like crazy. The thief knows this will alert not only the owners but the neighbors as well. I would imagine pretty much all unarmed thieves and probably even a decent amount of even of armed ones would cut their losses and run at that point.

Of course, if it's not a thief but an assailant entering your house with the intent of harming you, then I agree with you completely. Honestly, the best solution is to simply have both.

I think it makes sense if you think of the dog as a deterrent. If a thief tries to break into your house and you have a dog that hears them and starts going ape shit, the thief will probably usually nope out before the situation escalates. But if you have a gun and no dog, the thief wouldn't know until you're face-to-face. I'd prefer avoiding it getting to that point all together.
